I did a test in iMovie earlier today exporting a 4 minute video and it got very warm then too. Im going to push it to 10 minute export and see what happens. On a table though in case this thing blows haha

I say push it as well, better to find out now than months down the line. Push it to the limit in that 14 day window lol. I seen someone on here had a wobbler from a warped chassis. Apple said they would send him one out when they could and he could keep the other in the mean time. So better to test NOW! ;)

Photoshop and web browsing only get it a bit warm. Try VIDEO. Stream 1080p videos full screen on Youtube and see what happens after about 5 minutes.

I tried this. Streamed 1080p gaming videos and camera videos both for 10 minutes each back to back on Youtube and while it was warm it is far from anything alarming. I then just played a video for the last 30 minutes at 1080p and it's the same. I just don't see anything to be worried about personally, but to each their own.

Meh. Can't be worse than my mid-2009 MBP when converting video files. haha.

Although this is somewhat expected of rMP, I'm somewhat concerned as a potential buyer. Sure, I'd be buying rMB for basic tasks like MS Office and school work, but I watch a lot of movies as well (200+ movies per year..). Now I have to decide whether I should spend extra $300+ for higher processing power... Including tax, it will cost over $2000..

Well, that's like $1 a movie. 1.3/512 for me all the way.

Ok, so I exported a 10 minute 1080p video in imovie. Just going by feel, it got as hot as it did last time but it doesn't seem to get any hotter which is good. It also started to cool immediately after it was done exporting and had cooled down to normal within 3 minutes or so. 10 minute video took 24 minutes to export by the way.

Sounds like it is doing its job then. It'd be a problem if it got hotter and was crashing the machine.

You can just stress test the CPU too by throwing four yes commands into the terminal. This should max you at 99% (you can review in Activity Monitor). The machine gets warm, but I personally wouldn't describe it as "hot." As someone in IT profession for nearly two decades, "hot" is a very worrisome adjective.

There is nothing to worry about here IMO.

Here are the commands if you'd leg to peg your CPUs a bit easier..

yes > /dev/null & yes > /dev/null & yes > /dev/null & yes > /dev/null

(when done just killall yes)

What about watching a full length movie though? Like 1080p playback for 2 hours, it would suck if it starts to stutter or worse go out of sync an hour in due to the cpu throttling itself.

This could be a deal breaker for me since streaming video is one of my primary use cases and something my 2010 MBA doesn't handle very well anymore.

I'll definitely wait for hands-on reviews of the 1.3 GHz before I buy.

5 minutes of web browsing and a 5 minutes of streaming webcam video (only taking up 1/4 of the screen) and this thing is HOT! My iPad Air 2 and 6 plus dont even do this. Im almost afraid to push this thing. For sure not to be used on your lap or chest unless you can take some serious heat.

Telling what MacBook model you're talking would be helpful. I'm only guessing you're taking about the 12-inch Mac. But then again my super intelligent and stuff...

I fail to see the problem. I have the CPUs maxed at 99% via the yes command above and I'm currently streaming a 1080p animated clip on Youtube. 7 minutes in and not a single stutter.

If anything breaks internally, you got Apple care right? It's definitively one of the device to get apple care.

You don't need insurance for that, that's just covered in the standard 12 month warranty.

Does this happen? Surely the computer slows itself before the temperature gets dangerous rather than simply melting itself.

Sounds great. And it is the 1.1 Ghz, right?

Well it was running really warm/hot while it exported my video in iMovie and that took 24 minutes. Like I said, it seemed to hover around the same temperature, at least to my touch. I might try streaming a movie tonight and see what happens.

Yup. Performance and heat has been surprisingly good on my end. After Day 1 the extra $250 for a 1.3 I have on backorder doesn't seem worth it to me. Time will tell.

Why would it stutter or go out of sync? 1080p video is a piece of cake for the rMB.

Why have you bought two?

Placed an order for the 1.3 just in case I found the performance of the 1.1 to be on the edge of insufficient. My hope is I keep the 1.1 and cancel the order for the 1.3 in the next 7-10 days. 4-6 week backorder on the 1.3 anyway.

Thanks. Just what I wanted to know.
And while we're on it: since you didn't mention it, I assume there was no lag, stutter or anything while working in iMovie with large files, text, music?
Did it get uncomfortably warm/hot. I'll be using it on my lap quite a bit. Exporting I can do on my desk at night when it's cold and dark...

Forget it. Just noticed your other thread about iMovie. That will probably answer my questions.
Thanks again.

This thing gets hot fast!

I'm surprised you actually bought one. You were practically spamming the MacBook subforum severely criticizing it and telling members not to buy it.

I have seen a lot of people saying they were buying it to play with it for 13 days and returning it to Apple or BB. Wonder how many of those will actually really like it and keep it.

Yea, thats what Im doing. I have 13 more days to decide. I always get new Apple products to try for myself, skipping the Watch though, don't wear them. So far I'm liking the MacBook more than I thought I would. Laying in bed typing on it now, works great.
