G9
Hi Guys,

So I just bought a 17PM 512 dark blue at Charlotte Apple Store. It has the GH3 screen and I might maybe kinda see a faint if at all color shift, so difficult to honestly tell. The first one they brought out and set up they took back on the spot because the max brightness was nowhere close to the display phones. They brought out another one which I have now (GH3) that was as bright white as the display phones.

I mean....do I return this GH3 in hopes I get the coveted G9N? I prefer the brightest whitest displays on phones. My 14PM was blinding white, but don't know what screen it had, I traded it in.

Thanks
G9N has its own problems with pink tint and brightness uniformity, if your current display looks good to you and you are happy with it then the extra time to buy a phone/return may not be worth it

Are you happy with the screen? Or is the most important thing that others are happy with your screen?

This is a very good example of the LG green shift that goofballs all over this thread want to act like doesn’t exist. Guys you don’t need to rag on people trying to get the better screen because you don’t care about the difference.

Some people don’t mind the green shift and go about their day just fine with an inferior screen and guess what? That’s the majority of customers. Let the 2 percent whine and share opinions on the matter without gaslighting on what they do and don’t see.
I honestly don’t get why some people get upset when users with LG panels say they’re satisfied or even prefer them over Samsung’s. I have a Samsung panel on my 15 Pro and I’m happy with it, but I prefer the GVC on my SO’s Air. Yes, it has a blue shift, but it looks more uniform straight on and less oversaturated. It feels more neutral and natural, with no trace of red shift, magenta areas or yellow tint even with TrueTone on.

At the end of the day, it really comes down to personal preference. What I don’t understand is the fanaticism around defending Samsung panels no matter what, and even worse, discrediting people who prefer LG panels as if they were idiots.

Love my 17PM LG GVC panel. Sure slight green tint when tilting it past 25 degrees in lower half but overall the panel is much more uniform and also no more slight pink tint of the Samsungs I used to always get . Best panel I’ve had in a while.
Absolutely this! I’ve always had G9N panels from the 13 to the 16 Pro Max and they all had that damn pink tint, awful to my eyes.

For the first time ever on the Air and Pro Max I got perfect LG panels. No tint, a nice neutral white, and no pinkish cast.

I bought a 17 Pro and guess what? G9N with a slight pink tint at the bottom 🤬 I’ll keep exchanging it until I find a uniform panel.

I read that there are no LG panels on the Pro, so I just hope to at least find a uniform Samsung one, even though it’ll be really difficult.

Do you see the green tint when tilting towards you and it's just a non-issue for you, or you don't have any green tint at all?

Yikes, I've gotta exchange this 17 Pro Max with G9P as soon as there's a 256 GB model available in the area. I just can't unsee the head-on green hue especially after being spoiled by my previous G9N-equipped 16 Pro Max.

I spent more time comparing my 16PM GH3 and 17PM GVC. The GH3 is brighter at max brightness, doesn’t look dingy, and doesn’t have green color shift when tilted. I’ll be returning the 17PM and trying the lotto.
My ordeal is over.

Launch day blue 1TB 17PM GVC screen horrible green shift.

A week later, got another one. GH3 screen. Green shift is better, it happens at steeper angles than the GVC, like 5-10 degrees more rotation before bottom of screen turns forest green. For example, when tilted to same angle, the bottom 1/3rd of the GVC screen has severely shifted green, whereas only the bottom 1/5th of the GH3 has shifted. The top also dimmed less when top of screen is tilted away. However, screen was a little dingy compared to GVC. I was going to keep it anyway.

Went to a different Apple Store from where I got the first two phones to return the GVC phone. Checked out all the display models they had. All except one of the Pro models looked good, no green shift, just typical dimming or neutral gray shift when screen when is tilted, like my 16PM GH3 screen. All the Airs looked bad. All except just one PM looked varying degrees of bad, I was suprised to find a unicorn.

When talking to the employee about why I was returning, he said I could exchange it no problem and return it if it still looks green. So I went ahead and got a third PM.

Got home, turned it on. Instantly knew it was good. No green shift whatsoever. Setting it up now.

No idea which screen is it, but it's absoultely perfect and a keeper. I'll edit post if I run the diagnostics to find out.

Left is 17PM GH3. Right is new 17PM, haven't looked up code yet. Imagine my first GVC which I already returned, the green would be half way up the screen at this same angle. Horrible.

that is crazy how the left phone does that. I just warranty replaced my dads 15 pro and set it up and saw the green shift immediately when i was setting it up then found this thread.

Always a good feeling to be finished with the whole ordeal

base 17 with G9Q sammy panel, looks pretty great. I'm very happy with the uniformity and there's no uneven tinting on tilting, just the regular even temp shift all non QD-OLEDs have

Not just QD-OLED, any OLED lol
WOLED does it as well, and these technologies have nothing to do with these phone panels - they are different types of OLED.

That’s interesting, because my 13 mini has a GVC panel and it’s excellent. I had assumed it must be a Samsung panel until I checked.

It was comparing the iPhone 17 to my 13 mini GVC that made me return the 17. Lurid colour shift with viewing angle, at least as bad as your GH3 photo here. My 13 mini is impressively neutral at that top-closer angle.

So can these codes really describe a panel type? I’m starting to think it must be something else, like a factory code. Even that is odd if one GVC shifts hard to green and another, albeit from four years ago, behaves neutrally.

I see, but again, these types of OLEDs are not what’s in the iPhones. It’s not apples to apples (pun intended).
I did not say that they are the same type of OLED. My only point was that the only type of OLED I’ve seen NOT exhibit off-axis shift is QD-OLED.

Are there any OLED phones that don’t shift?

Must be some sort of personal preferences, since I can’t stand the pink tint those Samsung panels emit and would take a slightly green tint when at an angle than pink tinged Samsung screens.

I don't know which panel I have, but this year with 17PM I have good screen uniformity. With the 15PM, the first one I got had terrible yellow tint in low light, and I had to return and rebuy. The 16PM had this too, but it was at a different part of the screen where it didn't bother me so much. This year, I haven't noticed any yellow tint at all, so I'm happy.

My current 17 pm hs a GVC screen and looks just like the left one.
Already ordered a second one online but it will arrive either on the last day of my return window of the first or 1 day too late…. Don’t know if it will be too late to just return it because imagine the risk the new iphone has an even worse screen. It’s uniform, bright, just the green tint like the above.
