I’m pretty sure this has already been answered here but this thread is so long that I didn’t have the time to go through the whole thing so I apologize in advanced, I know the 17 pro max is suppose be brighter but does that apply only when outdoors? because when I’m inside my phone does not seem that bright even at full brightness, so not sure if this is normal behaviour or if I got a defective device.

Both 16PM & 17PM have same displays in terms of specifications. Due to better cooling system 17PM can afford to get up to 3000 nits in bright outdoors.

I thought the first few days of any screen are not indicative of the actual look and the contrast will increase and the overall temp will get warmer over time?

Let see what screens you guys have.

I have a LG screen (GVC) on my 17 pro max and has a bad case of screen (green) tinting when moving the bottom of the screen away from my face. Also it has a greenish tint overall when facing straight to my face.
It could be because my 13 pro max is 4 years old and has cumulative 1000’s of hours of screen on time (blue pixels degrade the fastest and red will be more dominant). Colours look somewhat washed out too. Coming from a 13 pro max, which had a perfect screen with better colours, it’s a little disappointing.

Is the lottery a thing again with this generation?

copy / pasted the following from reddit and worked for me:

For those wondering how to check your display manufacturer...

You can run sysdiagnose on your phone (press volume up, volume down, and lock button) all together for around a second. You will feel the phone vibrate.

Wait a couple of minutes and then go to Settings -> Privacy and Security -> Analytics and Improvements -> Analytics Data.

You will then scroll down and look for a file titled: sysdiagnose_XXXXXXXX.

You will click on that file and then click the arrow in the upper right hand corner and scroll down and click “Save to Files” Once it is saved you will go into your files and click the file to unpack it.

Within the folder that is unpacked you will click on the folder “ioreg” and then click the file “IODeviceTree”.

You will then use the magnifying search glass in the bottom right hand corner to search “raw-panel”. It will then give you a serial number.

I have an LG display which has the beginning letters of GH3.

GVC is the best of the LG panels but not as good as Samsung’s best which is the G9N.

The top 3 panels are:

• Samsung G9N • Samsung G9Q • LG GVC

The worst panel is LG GH3.”
I can’t seem to get the system report to appear

There seems to be a shortage of both Pros at the Apple stores at the 2 week mark since release. Is there a release happening in other countries?

More chance of getting a green tint than a pink hue though.
People seem to be more satisfied with their Samsung screens 😌
For people who say the green tint isn’t an issue unless you view the screen at an unnatural angle…I’m currently sitting in a lobby waiting area with windows directly behind me. I need to tilt the phone top towards me to get rid of reflections. If I had my GH3 17PM with me 1/3 of the screen would be green. Samsung screen perfectly uniform still with no shift. This is not a rare-use case or unnatural viewing angle…

This isn’t the case in the greater Seattle area. Tons of pros and pro maxes have released nearly every day at all of our apple stores. I picked one up a few days ago and at the time could’ve picked it up from any of the 3 stores closest to me, as well as the other 2 colors.

How do you know that? Because it makes sense actually.

I had two 16 PM, one G9N and one GH3 and I hated the GH3, because I prefer the warmer tones of the G9N. The GH3 colors were very cold and white and I really didn’t like it.

But the GH3 on my 17 PM looks almost identical to the G9N on my 16 PM with the warmer tones, which I like a lot.
This is what can be seen easily while comparing all iPhone 17 screens

Decided to try again (3rd phone) and this time got a 17PM with Samsung G9P screen. Looks perfect to me, will need to put it through daily activities and nighttime where unevenness always shows. But just eyeballing it in my office with ceiling light off the uniformity looks pretty great with no disturbing off axis shift. No orange splotches etc., with night shift and TT on, but I'll have to look again tonight.

Here are my two 17PM, LG GH3 on left and Samsung G9P on right. I am not exactly holding the camera at unusual angles here, the green shift on the LG is very apparent at a slight angle that I regularly use on my desk to check emails, etc., as in the 2nd photo. Difference between panels is night and day in this regard, but when looking at them head-on they are both really great panels.

Nothing wrong with them. Looking nice!

I’m definitely keeping my LG GVC panel on my iPhone 17 Pro Max.

I went to an Apple Store today and checked one of the 17 Pro Max display units and it had an LG GVC. The next unit I checked was a 17 Pro, and as expected, that one had a Samsung G9N.

To my surprise the G9N display wasn’t better at all. In fact, my GVC looked much better in both color accuracy and uniformity (also confirmed by wife). My GVC screen looked like it was much better calibrated. The green tint I thought I had was present on the G9N as well, which tells me I don’t actually have the green tint issue. (TT off, AB off, Brightness maxed out. Used ledr website and overall on various websites)

I’m finally relieved and ready to enjoy a happy few years with this phone with GVC.

For anyone in the same debate, I would highly suggest going to a store and comparing your display with a 17Pro (after confirming it is G9N) and decide before exchanging.

As a side note; my phone is most likely not the first batch of production. Purchased it last Friday (a week later after release date).

I don’t know what PM to keep. I have a G9N and GVC screen.

GVC screen typical green shift when tilting towards you. Head on it’s perfect.
Samsung screen no color shift but not 100% uniform. Upper half is tiny bit warmer than bottom half. So on light backgrounds and scrolling it’s noticable. Only on true tone on. When it’s off and my screen is cooler there is hardly any difference. Debated to just not use TT but I kinda like it.

So basicly green shift vs not uniform.

I wonder how many people out there have returned a perfect panel when looked at head-on, only to keep one that’s uneven and tinted just to go with the flow.

I guess we live in an age where quality is judged only through the opinions of others, and “good” is defined by how well we fit in.

I got a launch day base 17 with a GVC and unbearable green shift even at the slightest angle. Switched to the pro got a G9P which had almost no shift and was significantly more vibrant with much better blacks. Decided to play the lottery once more and got a pro with a G9N which has more shift than the G9P, however it is cooler and a bit more vibrant (better color depth without the excess warmth of the G9P). Torn on which to keep, leaning towards the G9N due to the more vibrant on axis view.

The debate of G9N/P appears to come down to personal preference with the N running cooler. Both are excellent panels overall but still a step down from my previous launch day 13PM with an immaculate G9N.

Similar situation with me, GH3 is perfect head-on but green shift when tilted forward. It is highly dependent on environment though, sometimes it doesn’t shift much at all. My G9P has no shift at all but has slight white uniformity difference. It’s not significant though and far better than most Samsung panels I’ve had.

Viewing angle came in handy yesterday when I needed to use my phone at an angle to avoid reflections. The GH3 screen would’ve been half green.

It sucks that we need to choose between green shift or subpar uniformity.

Something you will see all the time vs something you will see when you try to see it.

This is what I’m leaning towards today, keeping the GH3.

There is no such thing as a debate between the G9N and P. What you are experiencing is the normal difference between OLED panels. Two G9N would look slightly different as well, it’s total nonsense to base this on the OLED panel number.
