I dont get why your surprised, a lot of Windows computer have somewhat better specs than MacBook Pros for cheaper. If you want to go with the Windows, go with the Windows, but if you give your money to Dell then thats your choice.

I'm shocked that the MBA hasnt hinted you, if the MBA has lower specs then the MB but cost 600 more, what makes you think the new MBP are gonna be less? Your better off finding a refurb older MBP after the new ones come out in that case.

Nope, I just checked and it was the right system.

Not sure what we're doing different. I got $2418 this time (must have been just slightly different from my first config which came out $2409).

The MBA is more overpriced than most of their stuff IMO. I'm not surprised that they're overpriced. I'm surprised by the sheer magnitude of the overpricing. Like I said earlier, Apple's comps are usually about $300 over a similarly spec'd PC. The MBP is starting to look about $700-$1000 over a simillarly spec'd PC now, and that's a lot.

It's Apple, there really isnt anything to do. Like I said, if its a problem for you then just dont get one. I'm on my friends MBP and I'd say its worth every penny, but thats my opinion. I do believe that there are some things (MBA) that are too overpriced, but once again its Apple: Either cope with it or find an alternative. :/

You seem to have your prices a bit off. I just threw together the same Dell and it came up as $2,574. The MBP came up as $2,949 without Apple's overpriced RAM (so just add the cost of buying two 2GB sticks).

I disagree

  • The Dell doesn't include Wireless N
yeah look again..it does

  • The MBP comes with a remote
its an option and its not that expensive. also, it fits in the expresscard slot. kinda cool.

  • You will most likely not get your Vista disc (or if you do get something, it will be just a backup/restore disc)
not so much. its not like you can legally install your leopard install from a new macbook on another machine so i don't get your point.......

  • The Dell had no Gigabit Ethernet
do you even use gigabit ethernet?

  • The Dell comes with one less FireWire port than the MBP
? it has a firewire 400. If you want really fast data transfer you get an esata card anyways..and it usually comes out to being cheaper than getting firewire 800.

  • The Dell has no infrared
nope..the remote option is bluetooth (better)

  • The Dell has no MagSafe
score one for apple

  • The Dell has no backlit keyboard
score 2 for apple

  • The Dell doesn't include the enhancements in the trackpad that the MBP has
no, but it has scrolling on the side which is almost as good

  • The Dell looks pretty thick
its actually not that much thicker..maybe .2 inches more i believe

  • The Dell doesn't come with iLife ($79)
it comes with an adobe suite that actually looks at least as good as ilife

Talking about getting it cheaper. What Apple should do is to have one MacBook Pro base configuration, then provide all possible upgrade options. If I just want 256 MB VRAM on the videocard, I have to pick the middle model, ending up paying $500 more. That greedy tactic from Apple is not funny.

Sometimes I wish I could get a PC. I think the Sony TZ is just awesome, especially with the integrated 3G/HSDPA and mega battery life.

But, alas, that lovely Sony TZ might as well be free for all it's worth to me. Do Apple charge more than they could? Yeah, I think so. But they could charge twice as much again and the whole package would still be better value than a computer running any other OS.

Erm, mini rant over.

theres probably about a dozen or so threads on this....if you think the dell is that much better of a deal, than go with dell.

Ive used dells as my home pc for the past 5-6 years, and to be honest never really had a hardware issue...Ive had tons of software issues, all windows related.

Over the past year however, I really just started getting sick of the whole windows platform. Freqeunet crashes, spyware, adware, problems with mcaffee blocking me from sending email for an unknown reason...etc..etc...I finally had enough and bought a MBP and a 24" imac. Even though I could have gotten windows based systems that had a little more going for them spec wise, I choose mac because of the OS, and have had no regrets..

Bottom line, if you can put up with windows, than get your dell....but dont complain 6 months down the road when problems happen.

I agree completely. They should have several different configurations for convenience, but you should be able to customize whatever you want on those configurations.

That darn E class Benz better be cheaper or I'm gonna buy a Ford Taurus!

That analogy isn't valid in this case. I'm not comparing a $5000 luxury laptop to an entry level dell. I'm comparing two computers that are in the same class.

IE: Imagine comparing the Ford Taurus to a Honda Civic. Both relatively the same price, both sedans, yada yada. Now, what if the Taurus had fewer features but cost $45,000 compared to the Honda's $21,000. See what I mean? Yes, I know you get Mac OS which pwns Vista like non other, but we're comparing computers here. Specs matter quite a bit, so saying "Oh, you're only looking at the specs of each computer" is a stupid argument. Clearly you get a lot more power for your money with the m1530. The MBP has a lot of nice features (Mac OS, HDD protection, backlit keyboard, magsafe), but it's got less than an equally priced m1530. That's the point I'm making.

I dont wan't a Dell, don't make that mistake. I plan on getting a MBP. I'm just saying that the MBP's are much more overpriced than most Apple laptops have been in quite a few years, and I think Apple needs to pay attention to this.

So, hows making a topic here going to get them to see this? I think they're well aware of the prices they're choosing. (Cause I mean they ARE choosing the price)

It probably won't. I'm just throwing out my opinion for discussion.

well, you could do the hack that allows you to run leopard on your Dell :)eek:) laptop so you will have a half way solution. you will still be using an ugly laptop tho :D

yeah...

I can get a fairly loaded Honda for less than a BMW or Mercedes, too.

It's an apt analogy.

Not even half, do you know all the crap you have to do and check to make sure it will work?

Go buy that Dell and then come back here in a year or two when you go to sell it. I will enjoy the premium resale value of my MBP while you are kicking yourself for spending so much on a Dell that is basically valueless compared to a MBP (resale market).

no i don't, i use a MacBook Pro. i was merely trying to cheer up the OP :D

Its not easy, you have to alter a lot of coding. Even witht he new boot one, you have to search for drivers, and make sure your CPU, GFX Card, NIC, etc... will all work, and generally theres always a problem after installation. Even so, Leopard still wont run correctly.

Dell + Linux OS?

How about sticking a linux OS in the dell. That would weigh out the pros & cons a lot. Since you can make linux look almost EXACTLY like a mac.

They both run on Unix in the back end so its kinda the same thing.

Since your gona be saving that extra $1k that your talking about, you'll just spend a **** load of time setting it all up (downloading a media player....chat messenger etc)

And instead of spaces, you get a WICKED CUBE!

:face palm:

Remember how I said about a thousand times that I'm NOT GETTING A DELL? I was making a point about Apple's lack of price competitiveness.

Well come on now, I hate Vista. I want a Mac. I'm just saying... you can't deny how overpriced the MBP's are starting to look.
Firstly, can you please tell us how much the Dell weighs and its dimensions? Also, what's the projected battery life?

If you could provide such info it would really help me "see how overpriced mbps" are.
Eh, they've always been overpriced.

They're usually not "overpriced" when one controls for weight, battery life, and size. Throwing together only 3 raw specs isn't a perfect metric for which computer is more expensive than another.
I was making a point about Apple's lack of price competitiveness.

Again, please provide me with the data I asked for. :)

Also, this is probably worse now because the mbps haven't seen an update in ~8 months. Once the new ones come out they'll be very much the bargain (for their class). That's the way Apple simply does things. I like it because it means there isn't a constant devaluation of goods, but others don't like it (quite legitimately) because it makes purchases at certain times of the year a bit harder to justify. Should you be in that group of people that needs a new computer and knows that an update is coming that you can't wait for, just remember that either way the computer will be "old" in a matter of just a few years.
