My complete feedback with iOS 16 and Mojave

Positive points:
After updating to iOS 16.0 via the smartphone, when plugged into the computer an upgrade is downloaded so that iTunes recognizes the iPhone.
Synchronization of music from iTunes 12.9.5.5 works, as well as pictures and albums from iPhoto.
Calendar and Notes still sync well via the cloud.

Reminders also syncs if you refused to upgrade on the iphone (like in iOS 15).

Negative point:
It is no longer possible to directly download photos taken on the iPhone with Mojave applications.

Image Capture (like the iTunes import module) displays an error message when importing photos that were taken on the iPhone.
Deleting images on the iPhone from the Image Capture application still works.

Good news, i managed to import from the iPhone, with Image Capture and iPhoto, images in all formats (jpg, png, tif) that came from my other cameras like Nikon & Panasonic, or from androId cameras that I had received by SMS.

For photos and videos stamped "Apple manufacturer", I tried on the iPhone to duplicate them, modify, delete and then restore but nothing happens, there is always this damn error message.

On Mac I tried to re-authorize in the system preferences the full access to the above mentioned applications, but without result.

I can only hope that Apple will correct what seems to be a small bug...

Fortunately, there is still an alternative way to get the photos taken on the iPhone:
the easiest way I found is to send the images from the iPhone to the mac using AirDrop.

It also allows to transfer Raw images from recent iPhones (which are not compatible with iPhoto) to the computer.

The copy is quite fast, maybe faster than via a USB 2 cable, but if you take a lot of images on the iPhone, it adds a few steps that you didn't have before.
The only problem with the Airdrop alternative is that you lose the videos from live photos.

Hope they fix it ASAP.

I found a way to get photos from ios 16 to mojave photos. Copy photos from iphone into icloud Drive on the phone. That syncs up to my desktop on mojave. Then open photos on the mac and import into library.

That works… but it takes a ridiculous amount of time when there are hundreds of photos to import.

I don't know if this means anything or not, but I get a different error number (-9937) when I try to use Image Capture to import photos from my iPhone 14Pro, maybe it's simply because my Mac is on High Sierra instead of Mojave?

Also I just noticed something very pecular. There are a handful of old photos in my iPhone camera roll from around 2008-2009 which I can import successfully using Image Capture, no error message at all. But only a few photos, and I can't see what's different about those. I get the error message when trying to import anything other than these few I stumbled upon. Very odd...

some further observations of these Image Capture errors/failure on High Sierra w/ iOS 16...

I mentioned there are a handful of old photos in my camera roll that Image Capture can successfully import from my iPhone 14Pro/iOS16 to my Mac/High Sierra. I took a closer look, and more specifically:

- old images taken prior to about July 2009 CAN be successfully imported. Those would have been from an iPhone 3G running iOS 2.x, a 2Mpix camera
- any images starting from July 2009 up to present date CANNOT be imported. Those would have been from an iPhone 3GS running iOS3.0, a 3Mpix camera, and of course later models

I'm not sure if there's a clue here as to why Image Capture on Mojave or older fails with iOS 16, but there it is...

fyi MacOS 10.13.6 Image Capture still not working with iOS 16.0.3

Another reminder to report this at bugreport.apple.com because merely posting here won't do anything to solve it.

Someone on the Apple support forums says the issue is resolved in 16.1 betas. Can anyone confirm?

Just updated iPhone to 16.0.3 today and Image Capture on my Mojave 10.14.6 started importing perfectly again for ONE session.
Unfortunately, after a reboot, it stopped importing - it's back to the same issue!
I just submitted another feedback/bug report for my iPhone
Everyone should submit a bug report here https://www.apple.com/feedback/

Just getting on the record to say the same thing is happening to me.
Running OS 10.14.6 on my iMac and iOS 16.0.3 on my iPhone.
Everything works fine with iTunes, but I get the following errorr every time I try to import photos, either through Photos or Image Capture.
Some items cannot be added to your Photo library because they may be an unrecognizable file format or the file may not contain valid data.
The operation couldn't be completed (com.apple.ImageCaptureCore error -9956.)

I saw several sites that recommended giving Image Capture full disk access to fix the problem, so I tried that - no luck.

I've been holding out on upgrading the OS because the Music app stinks. This might be what pushes me over the edge.

16.1 is out. Apple’s support forums have several reports that this issue was fixed in the 16.1 betas. I will test promptly when it’s done installing and report back.

Same here. Just updated iPhone to 16.1 today and Image Capture 8.0(1106) on my Mojave 10.14.6 started importing perfectly again! Going to wait a few more days then update the rest of our devices.
Good job submitting the bug reports, everyone!

Just yesterday morning, I sync'd my iOS 16.0.3 iPhone to my ol' 2011 MacBook Pro running macOS 10.13.6 High Sierra - just fine.

Apple even sent a small update to iTunes that installed before I connected my iPhone.

Syncing works just fine for iOS 16 iPhone on macOS High Sierra.

If there was an issue, I am glad that Apple is responsible enough to fix the bug.

Apple clearly supports Macs on macOS El Capitan (10.11.6) and greater:

Just yesterday morning, I sync'd my iOS 16.0.3 iPhone to my ol' 2011 MacBook Pro running macOS 10.13.6 High Sierra - just fine.

It's the importing of photos/videos using Photos app or Image Capture that is the issue. If you tried that on 16.0.3, you would run into the same error message all of us got, which seems to be resolved with the 16.1 update.

I have a MacBook Pro running Mojave 10.14.6 and an iPhone 11 Pro currently on iOS 15.7. All I tend to do is take a load of photos and simply Air Drop them to my MBP. I have absolutely no desire to move onto Catalina or further. If I upgrade to iOS 16.1, will I still be able to Air Drop ok?

MY ISSUES ARE ALL RESOLVED!!! Special thanks to leo23454! I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro running High Sierra. I was very happy until I upgraded my iPhone X to iOS 16.03. I then had 2 major issues.

Firstly, when I imported photos from my iPhone to my Mac, I got an error message. I think it was the message mentioned above: Some items cannot be added to your Photo library because they may be an unrecognizable file format or the file may not contain valid data. So I used AirDrop for the last couple of weeks. The photos were dropped into my Downloads and then I used "Add to Photos" to place them into Photos. I then deleted the photos from Downloads. What a pain, but they did save with the metadata including place and date.

The second issue was that iTunes no longer detected my iPhone. That meant that syncing no longer took place in accordance with my iTunes settings, but thankfully iCloud still worked and so, for example, my contacts, calendar, and notes continued to sync. My biggest concern was that I could no longer do full backups of my iPhone to my Mac, including all the photos which I hadn't yet uploaded to my Mac. Note that I don't use iCloud for my photos, so the photos on my iPhone were in jeopardy. Thankfully it was easy to set up Google Drive as a temporary backup solution.

I WAS AWAITING iOS 16.1 TO HOPEFULLY FIX EVERYTHING! In fact it fixed my photo import problem. It was no longer necessary to use AirDrop. However, iTunes was still not detecting my iPhone. This was all quite distressing!

Since I'm planning to purchase an iPhone 14 Pro, I knew I'm stuck with iOS 16 and I was therefore considering upgrading my Mac to Mojave or later. Thankfully, after reading this forum and the comments from leo23454, I downloaded iTunes 12.8.3 from Apple's website and installed it over top of my existing iTunes 12.8.3.1. I ended up with 12.8.3.1. When I connected my iPhone, I got an information box which said I needed a software update. I did the download and instal. The instal took more than 30 minutes, so I was worried. When it finished, I connected my iPhone and was asked if I trusted my computer. I said yes and was pleased to see that iTunes now detected my iPhone and showed the iPhone icon. iTunes automatically synced with my computer and then I successfully backed up my entire iPhone to my Mac.

Wow! Everything now works like before and I wasn't forced to upgrade to Mojave or even later! So, at least in my case, iOS 16.1 AND HIGH SIERRA ARE WORKING TOGETHER FINE! HOORAY!!!

Hello,
I think had the same bug. I would plug in the phone and it wouldn't show up on iTunes but it would on other apps. I am on High Sierra as updated as it can be.

I tried redownloading iTunes from apple's website, which is the same version, 12.8.3.1, that I already had. I went through the installation anyway. After all that, I plugged in the phone but this time it said that I needed to download a software update to connect to the phone, but it did it through a pop-up as I launched Itunes. The weird thing is that it didn't offer the update immediately after I updated, but rather after a few minutes had passed. I genuinely do not know what triggered it. It is exactly 12.8.3.1, the same version that I already had, so I don't know what was in this "update." Nonetheless, it recognizes the phone and it is syncing.

It definitely looks like a bug, but hopefully, this sort of hit-and-miss workaround can help someone.
Thank you so much for your post! Reinstalling iTunes totally worked for me! That solved one issue with iOS 16.03. The other issue was solved by installing iOS 16.1. I just finished a long detailed post, which I hope will be helpful to others.

If you need compatibility with outdated hardware or software newer operating systems may not offer that.
Why is even the first-gen iPod recognized in iTunes, then? On the other hand, my original iPad Pro no longer shows images in Image Capture (High Sierra) after… well, I suppose it was iPadOS 16.1, but I have only confirmed 16.1.1. iTunes works fine. Everything else works fine. I don’t want to e-mail images to myself.

I'm glad there is a way to install updates via iTunes still. I inherited a iMac from 2013 and they no longer get updates. I can't remember what the latest update was for that computer but anyway glad I can still use it.
