The only problem with the Airdrop alternative is that you lose the videos from live photos. My complete feedback with iOS 16 and Mojave
Positive points:
After updating to iOS 16.0 via the smartphone, when plugged into the computer an upgrade is downloaded so that iTunes recognizes the iPhone.
Synchronization of music from iTunes 12.9.5.5 works, as well as pictures and albums from iPhoto.
Calendar and Notes still sync well via the cloud.
Reminders also syncs if you refused to upgrade on the iphone (like in iOS 15).
Negative point:
It is no longer possible to directly download photos taken on the iPhone with Mojave applications.
Image Capture (like the iTunes import module) displays an error message when importing photos that were taken on the iPhone.
Deleting images on the iPhone from the Image Capture application still works.
Good news, i managed to import from the iPhone, with Image Capture and iPhoto, images in all formats (jpg, png, tif) that came from my other cameras like Nikon & Panasonic, or from androId cameras that I had received by SMS.
For photos and videos stamped "Apple manufacturer", I tried on the iPhone to duplicate them, modify, delete and then restore but nothing happens, there is always this damn error message.
On Mac I tried to re-authorize in the system preferences the full access to the above mentioned applications, but without result.
I can only hope that Apple will correct what seems to be a small bug...
Fortunately, there is still an alternative way to get the photos taken on the iPhone:
the easiest way I found is to send the images from the iPhone to the mac using AirDrop.
It also allows to transfer Raw images from recent iPhones (which are not compatible with iPhoto) to the computer.
The copy is quite fast, maybe faster than via a USB 2 cable, but if you take a lot of images on the iPhone, it adds a few steps that you didn't have before.

That works… but it takes a ridiculous amount of time when there are hundreds of photos to import.I found a way to get photos from ios 16 to mojave photos. Copy photos from iphone into icloud Drive on the phone. That syncs up to my desktop on mojave. Then open photos on the mac and import into library.
I don't know if this means anything or not, but I get a different error number (-9937) when I try to use Image Capture to import photos from my iPhone 14Pro, maybe it's simply because my Mac is on High Sierra instead of Mojave?
Also I just noticed something very pecular. There are a handful of old photos in my iPhone camera roll from around 2008-2009 which I can import successfully using Image Capture, no error message at all. But only a few photos, and I can't see what's different about those. I get the error message when trying to import anything other than these few I stumbled upon. Very odd...
Just yesterday morning, I sync'd my iOS 16.0.3 iPhone to my ol' 2011 MacBook Pro running macOS 10.13.6 High Sierra - just fine.
Thank you so much for your post! Reinstalling iTunes totally worked for me! That solved one issue with iOS 16.03. The other issue was solved by installing iOS 16.1. I just finished a long detailed post, which I hope will be helpful to others.Hello,
I think had the same bug. I would plug in the phone and it wouldn't show up on iTunes but it would on other apps. I am on High Sierra as updated as it can be.
I tried redownloading iTunes from apple's website, which is the same version, 12.8.3.1, that I already had. I went through the installation anyway. After all that, I plugged in the phone but this time it said that I needed to download a software update to connect to the phone, but it did it through a pop-up as I launched Itunes. The weird thing is that it didn't offer the update immediately after I updated, but rather after a few minutes had passed. I genuinely do not know what triggered it. It is exactly 12.8.3.1, the same version that I already had, so I don't know what was in this "update." Nonetheless, it recognizes the phone and it is syncing.
It definitely looks like a bug, but hopefully, this sort of hit-and-miss workaround can help someone.
Why is even the first-gen iPod recognized in iTunes, then? On the other hand, my original iPad Pro no longer shows images in Image Capture (High Sierra) after… well, I suppose it was iPadOS 16.1, but I have only confirmed 16.1.1. iTunes works fine. Everything else works fine. I don’t want to e-mail images to myself. If you need compatibility with outdated hardware or software newer operating systems may not offer that.
