Then how we're some apps ready within days of the phone launch? (Serious question)

If it was a large company, they may have had access before everyone else. Otherwise, the developer updated their app and submitted it without first testing it on the actual iPhone 5, which is risky and generally not advised.

Is it just me or were the devs actually quicker to update their apps to the new resolution when iPhone 4 was released compared to now?

With the iPhone 4, developers basically only had to edit each one of their graphics files to account for the retina screen. The iPhone 5 involves (most likely) changing graphics and also coding changes to account for the longer screen. It is a much more involved process than when the iPhone 4 came out.

----------

I have some apps that STILL haven't updated to the retina display yet. lol

Wow, that is pretty bad. I expect we will add a lot more apps to the abandoned pile with the iPhone 5 changes.

Are easily the most aggrivating feature of the iPhone 5. Why haven't app developers updated their apps faster? Haven't they known about the screen size for at least a month? I have 125 or so apps, about 8 of them are formatted for iPhone 5. This is somewhat aggravating.

Considering there are apps that still aren't retina, I'm not sure why you're surprised by this.

Get the Jasmine app!

First heard about Jasmine on this forum. Been using it about a week now and it's replaced the youtube app on my iPhone 5 and I've installed it on my iPad 3.

Really slick app. Clean, fast and does exactly what I need it to do.

Give me a break.

What's your job? Does anyone ever say to you "why does it take that long? Why can't it take half that time? You must not be good at this."

Amateur instigator. Yes im good at my job and No, my work is never done.

The last sentence in your quote was never said, but it seems like the developer that posted automatically assumed that it was implied. No need to get all defensive.

At my job, or any job, if I'm asked "Why does it take that long?", then I will give the person a straight answer. There is no reason to be offended by a simple question that you ought to be used to answering.

The question posted was not "Why does it take that long?"

Rather, it was: The amount of time it's taking is "aggravating."

Aggressive questions get defensive answers. That's just the way it works.

I bet a lot of them are stuck in the queue waiting for approval.

If that is the worst thing about your day, then consider yourself having a pretty good day.

It would depend on the app, but any app that has any programatic animations that are based on screen size calculations would have to have them all redone.

Most apps that aren't games actually wouldn't have to change many graphics assets because the size change for a lot of apps just results in a larger viewable area for their scrolling windows, etc (essentially, putting more of their content on the screen at once, but the content doesn't have to be bigger).

The problem here is, anything that is based on a hardcoded pixel height has to be rewritten. And a lot of the devs are probably being smart this time around and rewriting it to not be dependent on those hardcoded sizes anymore, so any future size changes will be easier to adapt to.

More accurately, "Defensive people give defensive answers".

Shifting the blame to other people is silly. If an app is going to take an extra month then that's fine and most people can handle honest answers. But let's not start acting as if the reason for the delay is syntax.

"Its not a companys fault for not finishing it, its the consumers fault for wanting it finished"

Deflecting blame only shifts attention from the things that matter

Anyone noticed web apps being letterboxed too? I use the Urban Dictionary web app and was surprised when I used it for the first time on my new phone last night to see it letterboxed. I deleted it since it had been saved on my 4S and then went to the website on Safari to create another home screen icon for the web app. After doing this when you open Urban Dictionary from the home screen to launch the web app it is still letterboxed. How does that make any sense? Anyone else have this problem? I guess UD has to update their web app to support the new resolution? I figured since it's bascially done through Safari it wouldn't matter and would naturally fit to the taller display.

with as huge as the "with friends" apps are, I would have thought for sure these would have been done by now.

Is it just me or apps like eBay , big names have not been updated to the iPhone 5 yet

Also the apple store app has not been updated

There very own app

Haha this is one reason why I chose the black version over the white. The black bars don't stand out as much. But also, it apparently takes developers a long time, I'm still waiting for some apps to update to the iPad's retina display

Most of my most-used apps have been updated:

Tweetbot
Pocket
Reeder
AnyList
Netflix
Hulu Plus

And there's plenty more that I don't use that often that have been updated already

I am however waiting for YouTube and Sportacular to update...

If Apple wasn't so obsessed with secrecy and would provide test units to developers ahead of time, you'd see a lot more apps ready for the 4 inch screen already. Unfortunately, the devs have to wait just like everybody else.

I am hopeful that by the time this time next year, when the 5s is here, that LTE is more ubiquitous and 90% of apps are updated to the 4 inch display.

90% of the apps you like and use maybe, but I wouldn't count on 90% of the apps in the entire app store to be. Just being realistic as a iOS user since 2007 that has a gigantic app collection for iPhone and the iPad.

i haven't followed the rumours but how are apple gonna handle the ipad mini if one is released? They can't stretch the iphone screen or shrink the ipad screen so surely its gonna be a new resolution, therefore more fragmentation??

Because all the rumors say that it will have a 1024x768 screen, so the same as the iPad 1 and 2. Same number of pixels in a screen that is dimensionally smaller means that the app developers won't have to make any more changes, as long as the app already coped with the first two iPad generations.

What's up with whatsapp for f-ck sake!
Isn't it one of the most used apps all over the world? Damn you people. Get it updated!!!!!

The Jasmine app has replaced the YouTube web app and official app on both my iPhone and iPad. It just works. :)

Then Samsung will prepare ads/posts on tech forums to attack the 4" screen even before the debut of iPhone 5.

Whatsapp's team is lazy. They usually push out an x.x.1 update every quarter......
