It doesn't make it any less sad. Making excuses WHY it's OK to waste large amounts of time doesn't make it any less "sad". That seems to be how people think these days...my time, no matter how I spend it, it's OK. I can sit on the couch and stare at the TV for a month straight because I want to, and that's not a "sad" waste of time/life because it's what I want to do?

I guess nothing is "sad" anymore. It's all "OK".

Well, you got 6 likes so far, so I'd say for you...yes. :)

It’s their life, want to tell them how they should spend their money as well?

There it is, the reason Mac Pro's (and others) are tagging along. Apple should be renamed to "iPhone inc.".
The crowd rules.

Of those Buying an iPhone now thru the end of the year, this what I/we think:

1.) ~60% will very-likely Pull the Trigger on the XS, XS Max, or XR.

2.) XS = ~10%, XS Max = ~20%, & the XR = ~30%.

Thus, the XR will ~ equal the other two !

Thus, the size of the Lines now/soon, is/will-be probably ONLY half the total.

I wonder if the smaller lines compared to other years is because of the price tag or the new name scheme? :p Jokes aside. I used my staff discount as soon as the XS was available for preorder and got my partner an 8+ for $132 AUD :D Now I have resigned from Apple, 3 months later than I should have lol. I don't think we will be getting the latest iProducts anymore.

I've had surprisingly decent luck getting an iPhone on day 1 without camping out in line for hours/days and I'm in Los Angeles where people were camped out..

Last year I showed up at the Grove Apple Store about 3 PM and it was crowded and there was a line, but they still had stock. I wound up getting in line and asking what they had and they still had the one I wanted (Silver iPhone X with 256 gigs) so I put my name down and got in line. Waited about an hour and had fun texting my friends that I was about to get the mysterious new face ID iPhone, and then grabbed some coffee on the way back to work. A good time was had by all.

The higher the price the longer the lines.
They’re setting trend.

i highly doubt it. the higher the price the shorter the line. i'll check out the line at the mall tomorrow just for entertainment plus i want to see how the MAX looks.

No one should be thinking those waiting in line are crazy...what about those of us who got up in the middle of the night to place an order. Wait to tomorrow and people will be on here claiming that the UPS TRUCK passed their house. We all had to go fetch in in 2007..

Wouldn’t waste my time, he does it himself...just not for iPhones.

If it’s for taste, oh well. De gustibus.

If it’s for politics/religion, oh well. Personally I don’t think that a chicken sandwich will mutate me into a religious freak as a coffee in a cup without “Christmas” in december won’t transform me into a gay liberal radical chick. I buy a sandwich or a coffee and nothing more.

My point is, they are waiting in line for a product that won't be revolutionary to anyone they bump into on the street.

Like the FIRST iPhone was in 2007.... or the FIRST iPad.... they were incredible to see/hold for the first time.... nobody had experienced anything like it before.

Not true for this year's models.

I don’t think Apple fans line up for the new iPhone because it’s revolutionary. Maybe they just eager to have it right away instead of waiting. In my case, I’ll get the Xs Max when it’s available in the Apple Store.

Stop dissing people who queue. I don’t personally, but people do and it’s up to them. Many like the shared experience and the fun of doing it. Why go to a live sports game when you can watch it on TV...

It’s a totally cool tribal experience. If tens of thousands can get loaded and jump through fire at Burning Man then they sure can line up and get a thrill out of something that’s become inherent in our lives - actually now the most important device we all own..

From this thread I got to know:
- there are a lot of people around the world with huge amount of disposable income and time
- the said people enjoy waiting in the queue and find it a way to socialize.
- they find it a part of the experience of having an outrageously expensive iPhone
- they’d rather take a day or two off work to have the latest and the greatest gadget as soon as possible instead of using that time to go on vacation.

I rocked up 15 minutes before the store (JB HiFi Bourke St Melbourne) opened and was third in line. Picked up an XS, was disappointed that the new Nike+ watches aren't available for a couple of weeks.

Wow, sad that this thread got ruined by the ultra insecure who need to make those standing in line seem like they are doing something they don't approve of. Jeez, get a life, live and let live. Personally I would never stand in line (again, tried it one year and hated it), but who cares what others do. I'll bet each and every griper who is crying about people standing in line that I could pick out MANY things they are "wasting" their life on.

None of the lines pictured are in the US.
I pre-ordered for in-store pickup. I know Apple will probably have separate line for reservations vs. walk-ins, but hopefully this won't take long. Funny thing is, I pre-ordered around 8 AM Eastern (around 5 hours after pre-orders started) and had no problem reserving in-store pickup for the one I wanted (Max 512 GB Gold), while shipments have slipped by 2 weeks by then. They had 2 pick-up windows in the store I picked: 9:30 to 10:00 AM (which I picked) and 10:00 - 10:30 AM. My guess is that they expect to get the pickup reservations out served within half an hour or so.

Reminds me of a couple years back when the thing was to congratulate those who received their new iPhones. Did they win the lottery or a contest? Did they get a promotion or get married? No, they willingly chose to exchange a large amount of money for a new piece of electronics, but somehow, people felt the need to congratulate that person as though they lucked into something. When I buy a new TV, car or water heater, the last thing I expect is someone to congratulate me!

You don’t get congratulatory gesture when you buy a TV, car, etc, because it’s not an iPhone. To a lot of people, iPhone is considered a ‘must-have’.

What they don't seem to realize is they are wasting their time posting about other people wasting their time.
Apparently they don't recognize the irony of their own comments.
