It's been discussed here previously.

I can't stand sites that use them...
I have to second this. I find these pop-ups really bothersome. When I think of the ads IMG uses when hovering over a keyword, I throw up a little.
If you could make this an option, I think it might be ok though...

Couldn't we just use more descriptive titles instead?  :D

You see, now that's just crazy talk.

If you used descriptive titles, all you'd have to go on would be something like this:

Subject: Does Applecare cover cracked Macbook palmrests?

Whereas, with the much better tooltips, you would get this:

Subject: OMG IM SO MAD RITE NOW!!!!!11111

Tooltip: OMG U GUYS I JUST GOT BACK FROM TEH APPL STORE AND IM SO PISSED I CANT BELEEVE HOW THESE PPL TREET ME AND IM GOING TO RIGHT A LETTER TO STEVE JOBS RIGHT NOW BECUZ IM AN IMPORTANT PURSON AND OMG IM SO PISSED RIGHT KNOW....

Now I think we both know which one is more informative. ;) :D

Its just a setting in Vbulletin. No mod needed. There is a mod that lets you get an ajax request for the first post.

If you guys need some custom mods let me know. I've released a few on vb.org and do a lot of custom work for other sites. Its the least I could do. MacRumors is what changed my mind on Macs. I'm now a proud owner of a macbook pro. And I absolutely love it.

I really enjoy it at other forums I go to, and if each one had the option to enable or disable it, I don't see too much of a problem.

Longer loading times, phfft. My time is worthless. :p
I thought it was an all or nothing setting. Even if it could be enabled/disabled per user it would still be a performance drain on the servers, if I am not mistaken.

I may be biased though, I am not a big fan of that feature. I know, 'don't use it or hover stuff'... but the thing is: I like being careless with my cursor.

poo poo on the peek-a-boo preview thingy.

Thread summary with mouse-over

I visit this forum more than once daily, read often, post seldom. I love it and owe many people thanks on here.

I do, however have one suggestion to improve browsing threads. I am a member of several other forums and one feature that many of them share which I like is when you mouse-over a thread title, the first sentence or two of the thread show up.

This makes things easier for me in that, I often see a thread title and hope that it's about one thing, so I click it only to find out that it's something I didn't have any interest/need in reading. If the first, say 100 characters or something, were available as a preview on mouse-over, it would save time reading threads, and possibly improve quality of responses as people wouldn't respond as negatively out of frustration from reading a thread which had a misleading title. (This is not very much of a problem on these forums however)

Just an idea. Chime in if anyone else would enjoy this feature.

<snip>
I've seen the feature on other forums and don't like it all.
<snip>

I agree. I that little text window pops up onto the underlying thread causing you to have to move the mouse somewhere stupid.

Although, an option in User CP could be useful for the people who want it.

I find it very useful in other forums, so I would be happy to see it implemented on MacRumors as well.

Yeah I find this feature very useful on other fora and have often thought MR could use it as well. Thread titles aren't always clear or descriptive.

Thread Preview by hovering

Is it possible to have the initial part of a post or thread show when hover above the thread or post topic? Macforums does this.

Thanks

It is quite possible, but this idea has been rejected every time it has come up in the past, for two primary reasons:
  1. Many people find it more annoying than helpful.
  2. It puts an additional demand on the server in delivering forum pages.
Although we increase our server capacity to keep up with demand, I doubt this idea has gained much favor.

Agreed...I can't stand forums that have this. The previews are always getting in the way of what I want to click.

Can we start having little yellow post preview pop ups when you hover your mouse over a thread title like almost every other vBulletin forum?

It's really useful to be able to preview the first couple of sentences of a thread so you can get the drift of it before you click on a useless thead you're not interested in.

ModNote: There have been several threads on this topic over time; I merged them together to consolidate the discussion. --mkrishnan

so whats the outcome? Can we turn it on as a user option?

Have you thought about upgrading the forums?

To the type that gives a pop-up window of what's inside each post. It saves you time, because it allows you to see the first few lines so you can not click the link if it doesn't look interesting. An example is the www.civfanatics.com forums.

After visiting a forum which uses this feature I'd say it's not so bad. It helps for figuring out what someone wants when they chose a stupid non-specific thread title.

If this was ever to be integrated into MR I think it would be good on an enable/disable sort of way.
