I really like the thread preview feature on other forums I visit, and I would love to see it here.

Thanks

The lack of pop-up description was just a decision made when we upgraded from 2.x to 3.0. It was a bit distracting and didn't know how people would take it. It doesn't really increase load, might increase bandwidth, but prob neglibably.

if people think it's useful, it could be enabled.

As for the reply icon.... it prob was a casualty of the theme. I'll look into it.

Arn, judging by the amount of posts in this thread, it's clearly a wanted function. It saves so much time being able to preview instead of having to go into a thread and then hit the back button. In some ways it might actually reduce load.

In any event, I'd really like to see this feature, and as someone with two VB licenses, I know how easy it is to implement.

I've only been on one other VB site that didn't have it and that was because the admin didn't know about it. That site is using it now.

I feel like I'm back in 2003! haha........ Seriously, great site, but flip the switch.

I'm not for it, in other forums that I frequent its interfering and distracting. I move the mouse over threads and pop ups occur. If some posters used descriptive titles would this discussion even be occurring?

Hitting the back butting or a favorite on your menu bar is better then dealing the with the nuisance preview bubble (or what ever its called).

Clearly, your interpretation of "so much time" differs from mine. I don't understand how the following is "so much time" - taking the five seconds to load a thread, determine your lack of interest, and go back one page.

Well, click on a bunch of threads and then have to go back. Do it 10-15 times and see. There are many times I see a thread title that I think I want to see what it's about only to find when I go into it, it was a waste.

No preview is like windows95.

So it takes an extra minute of your time. If one minute is that important, perhaps there are other things you should be doing instead of browsing.

I agree with this. It's distracting, yet more annoying. I hate having to move the cursor away from them so they disappear and I can then read or see what it covered up.

As for not having it enabled making the site like Windows 95 goes, I say there is a lot to be said for simplicity. Just because we can do something, does it mean we should?

Just to be clear, for those who are admins of vB-based forums elsewhere, we are talking about the "Length of Thread Preview Text" option? I just realized I have it enabled on my one forum and I never even noticed it before.

I vote yes for enabling it.

So is this option ever going to be implemented for those who want it?

C'mon, even the Toucharcade.com forums have this enabled by default, and I understand that site is owned by the same company?

Agreed. I have no desire for this feature to be implemented.

No it wouldn't.

Yes it would. Where is preview meant to go and how would it be made readable without being obstructive? For this kind of feature to fit in and work well, the forum would need a redesign. Otherwise it would be stupid and useless.

That's not the sort of preview we're requesting though. Visit the toucharcade.com forums to see how it actually works. And don't forget - this would be a >>>>USER-SELECTABLE OPTION THAT'S OFF BY DEFAULT<<<<

Why are the naysayers even bothering to repond to this thread in light of the above?? Can we get an admin response instead?

We have an admin response already in this thread, post #88 by Doctor Q.

Thanks I've seen that one. Still I guess I'd like to see one where the rationale for not having this feature enabled to begin with (like any standard vbulletin forum), is given?

Is it off to increase the number of clicks the forums get, perhaps?

Because it doesn't happen "out of the box". And as Doctor Q says, it would take custom coding to do so.

My question was about the rationale for not having the preview by hover available and enabled by default, as they do on most other vbulletin boards. I.e. I wasn't asking why there's no user-selectable option in the user CP - I now undestand such an option would be something that's not part of standard vbulletin.

But again - why exactly was the thread preview disabled, to begin with?

The basic answer is because the site owner doesn't like it.

yeah... in the past the the decision was to keep it off because some people really don't like it (myself included :) ) But it's possible that it may be able to be enabled as an option in the future.

And yet they kept it enabled on toucharcade.com, a site owned by the same owner?

I can't speak for the site owner, but he's going to do what he wishes with his sites.

I wouldn't be so demanding and assertive about such a trivial feature as it's not going to help your cause, IMO.

Demanding and assertive?

Seeeing as this thread was last active in Nov 2011, and the requested feature is still nowhere in sight, perhaps we should be MORE demanding and asertive? Not to mention the thread itself was started as far back as 2005.
