It's a nice though but NO, PLEASE NO! I can't stand that on other forums, it drives me crazy. I end up always moving my mouse around while
I'm reading so that the yellow box doesn't come up. It makes me insane!

Dammit, I really want this feature. You know if you scroll or just drag the sidebar down, the preview doesnt popup? And you guys are talking about it making the forum load slower? Are you serious?

Excellent idea. That'd really come in handy. Any vBulletin gurus know if this is feasible? :)

This would be very useful if it could be implemented. At the moment we can only see the date of the last post in the thread, but being able to see the date of the first post without opening the thread would be very handy. 3-4 year old threads have been revived, and this could cut down on that.

I'm not logged on so I might just be getting an abbreviated version of the site, but I don't see the date a thread was created in the Today's Posts section on the Repairman Jack forums. I am mad so I may have just missed it. Alternatively, we may be on completely different wavelengths.

It's incredibly annoying on the MacBytes page. Pretty pretty please get rid of it there.

:)

Thread preview

Hey Macrumors,

I frequent a similar format (probably the same I think) BB at another website and when looking at threads in a forum--say Macintosh Computers, for example--and you move your cursor over a thread title, you get a preview of that thread in a little pop-up box. This is a great time-saving device for looking into threads with vague titles to see if what the person is saying is of interest to you or not.

You guys should get this feature.

Board I'm talking about is www.tetongravity.com/forums, for reference.

I hate those things...they're always blocking my view of the rest of the page. After the stupid context-sensitive ads that pop-up in some forums and annoying sigs with animated images that are longer than the posts, they're about the quickest way to get me to leave a forum for good.

yeah... in the past the the decision was to keep it off because some people really don't like it (myself included :) ) But it's possible that it may be able to be enabled as an option in the future.

It would add a bit of strain, yes - with that option switched on it needs to access the posts table (which, as you can imagine, is big) which it wouldn't otherwise need to*. Plus there's a bit of processing involved in making the post viewable (removing quotes and so on), making sure the user posting it isn't ignored and so on.

* or at least, it would need to access it an extra time

Feature request: Hovering over a thread displays a preview

Another one of my favorite hangouts on the web, OCForums.com, has a great feature where if you mouseover a thread, a box comes up displaying the first few lines of the first post. Any way we could enable a similar feature here? Thanks!

It's been discussed here previously.

I can't stand sites that use them...they increase page load times and the pop-ups get in the way of everything.

Edit: Found another thread on it...looks like my views were the same back then. :D

I really enjoy it at other forums I go to, and if each one had the option to enable or disable it, I don't see too much of a problem.

Longer loading times, phfft. My time is worthless. :p

I respectfully disagree with the first part. :) I see absolutely no difference in page load times between MacRumors and OCForums. The second part is your opinion, but I find that a two line text box isn't really obtrusive. Plus, it only comes up if your mouse is over the actual link to the thread, not the little box around the link.

Is there a way to enable/disable this for individual users?

Can you just install something like CoolIris?

http://pimpmysafari.com/plugins/cooliris-previews-13b

That way, you get it on any website you want, and the rest of us don't have to be irritated by it. :D

Hey, thats pretty neat...but not exactly what I was talking about. In that case, its a full sized preview window. The box I'm talking about just has a line or two of text thats just a few inches long and maybe a quarter inch tall.
