Some people like it; some don't

The mouseover feature really annoys me personally as I try to move my mouse down the page at sites that use it. Using the cursor to guide my eyes is my habit when scanning thread titles. Just my 2 cents but I'm glad that MacRumors doesn't use the feature.

I posted a thread with this request yesterday only to see it merged with this big thread here, hehe.

OK so the bottom line of this 5-year-old request now, in A.D. 2010, is this:

1, most vbulletin sites on the web use this feature but here, due to a handful of opposers who could never learn to hover the mouse OUTSIDE the thread titles to avoid any annoyances, it never got enabled

2, it never was made entirely clear if this could at least be enabled on a per-user bases, in the user CP

3, as for the additional server load, it was never considered that what this costs the server in terms of accessing the posts table, it might alleviate in terms of not serving the thread at all- most of us want this feature to not have to load the thread after we find out via the preview feature it is bogus

Geez I'm angry, lol

Just because "most" vBulletin boards use this feature (which by the way is a totally erroneous statistic unless you can back it up) doesn't mean MR is obligated to as well.

True.

Worth exploring.

Couldn't it be added to User CP so user could decide whether to use it or not? I would find this feature useful and it could possibly lower the server load due the fact that people wouldn't click the threads, just preview them and decide whether to click or not. Or is this one of those features that would require an update from the ancient 3.6.10 version of vBulletin MR is using? :p

Seeing as this is enabled by default in vBulletin and there's really no reason to disable it, it's pretty safe to say "most". I frequent up to 10 IT-related vbulletin forums and MR is the only one that has it disabled.

I think at the very least it should be a user defined option. If we want it let us turn it on, if not we can keep it off.

Not out of the box but yes in theory. If MacRumors ever decides to enable the feature then it might be possible to have the previews depend on a user setting by changing the vBulletin code, although MacRumors generally avoids customizing the code (to reduce the chances of glitches or incompatibilities down the road). I don't think any version of vBulletin has a user-settable thread preview option and I don't think it would take a newer version of vBulletin.

This is really the only downside to the site. Im so used to the mouse over feature. It saves so much time. Instead of clicking a page and waiting for it to load just hover over the title and bam! its all there. read the first couple of words and you can decide whether you want to read the rest or not. All other forums i browse have this feature....and until now i had no idea there were ppl that dont like it.

I really really think it should be enabled.

Is it possible to make this a user selectable feature? I, like many other, would love this feature to be available.

Please DO NOT implement that. It's not a feature, it's an ugly PITA. Curious about what's in the thread? Click on it and read. I've never seen this implemented usefully. It always gets in the way. Plus, how do hover with your finger? Its a bad idea, MR. Thanks for realizing this!

Thanks for realizing you're in the minority (seing as any other tech forum has this enabled by default and no one's complaining) and we are asking for this to be at least user-selectable here on MR, meaning off by default but you could enable it in your user control panel.

Other tech forums are doing it wrong. just click the link. Or don't. MR isn't a gimmicky site that resorts to craptactics. You're way off about the whole majority thing, too. This thread is ancient. Your "majority" isn't silent, it's nonexistent.

How does it threaten your existence if this is made a user-selectable feature on MR, i.e. off by default? You know you'd never have to use this "craptastic" feature right?

And this thread is ancient because some of us have been clamoring for this feature for ages and all we get instead of action is people like you chiming in with their ignorant remarks.

I sure would like to have this feature enabled as well.

For the record, I don't want this feature and if it was a user selectable option, I wouldn't use it.

I like MacRumors the way it is; an interface and look that is simple and clean.

If it would be a user-selectable option and didn't have a negative affect on site performance, I don't see why it would hurt. It'd be like the post voting... unobtrusive and ignored by those who don't want it.

Fixed for accuracy. :D

I believe if we had this enabled then the performance of the forums could even be affected positively. Lots of crap threads loading currently, slowing the site down, all the while people could just preview them and not ever bother with loading them if they see the first few sentences indicating a crap thread.

I can see this taking quite a big load off the server.
