It’s been a long time since I’ve looked forward to updates. I’m not looking forward to anything. The eSIM transfer sounds cool, but not something I need at the moment.

I dread major updates and what beloved feature could get messed up by them. I still remember when a QuickTime update made full-screen playback a “pro” feature. And when an iPhoto update got rid of sorting faces alphabetically. And when a Numbers update got rid of being able to see the page borders without having to open the Print menu.

And then major version updates are prone to major bugs. (I call them “updates” instead of “upgrades” because updates are sometimes downgrades.) So if I update, I’ll be waiting a few versions to try to avoid any disastrous bugs that could brick my phone or whatever.

it says ios 26 is available in my settings… am i missing something? i thought it wasn’t out yet. it doesn’t say beta this time

Live Translation, if it works, will be a game changer for me. My wife and (of course) her family are from China. She speaks rudimentary English, I speak (barely) rudimentary Mandarin. Her family speaks no English at all. If Live Translation works, I will be able to converse with her family for the first time. My guess is it will be slow, prone to errors and kludgy for the first couple of years, but with Apple now needing to keep up with Google's version, they won't just abandon it in its first or second iteration. If they do, and Google really takes off with this, which they likely will, that will be time for me to consider leaving the Apple Universe. I can foresee in 5 years or less, it being fluid, immediate, no gap in time, and maybe even speaking in your vocal intonations.
Yes, I am looking forward to Live Translation as well and for similar reasons. I used to work with people who were not comfortable speaking, reading, or writing English and I for my part am not comfortable speaking, reading, or writing in other languages. I think Live Translation will really help with communicating with others.

99% of the new features I never use and have no need for. I don't use AI / don't use Siri / don't use Facetime, don't play games, don't pay for apps, and as for photos prefer to use my Canon 5D Mark IV. I simply use an iPhone for phone / sms / email / occasional web browsing / YouTube / FB / Insta / online shopping and of course phone calls - that's it.

i’m most looking forward to not installing it and hearing others around me complaining out of regret. it’s already happened once today
I’m most looking forward to 18.7. Will stay on that as I don’t see much compelling in 26 (running it on my iPads ) to sacrifice the stability and battery life.

I tried one of the betas on iPad and couldn't get over the rubber band effect when swiping. Is it toned down in the later betas or RC?

Got to open up the OS a little. I mean, by 2025 standards iOS is for all intents and purposes feature-phone circa 2006 tier. iPhones have top tier custom CPU with tons of high speed RAM and you are limited to one texting app, one telephony app, etc. App store is increasingly anemic and that really dosen't help matters.

In addition, lets start with a "pro" user option of having a toggable FPS counter on screen, you know, to see when that 120Hz is actually happening. Owned Pros since the 13 series and I don't think I've seen a single app, or game run in 120Hz. Yeah, yeah, the UI will sometimes render in 120Hz, we are told. Not that I don't trust Apple (I absolutely DO NOT) but it would go a long way of increasing that trust and being a cool techie, aka "Pro" feature, if this was something you can toggle.

Or maybe, just maybe, 120Hz actually rarely if ever happens (outside of togglin' some Safari flags) and letting people know this would lead to another sexy class action.

Also, let us have a proper file system on the Pro. Yeah, yeah, easy of use, abstraction, etc etc. Whatever, its 2025. It's a $1300 device with a Pro moniker, it should have something akin to an actual non-abstracted non-containarized file system.

The more I use it the more I find myself smiling during interactions with it. They finally brought fun and whimsy back to, let’s face it, a boring ass OS.

All the devs that think it’s a disaster are 100% biased to the max. The general public is going to absolutely love it, as I do. Best UI change they’ve made since Aqua.

No matter the complexity under the hood (I don't think there is much of it) on the surface it ends up being just a relatively minor visual update.

They have to purge the boomer WASP bean counters whose idea of "progress" is what amounts to a system wide skinning update. Chinese are talking about prototypes of smartphones with minature detachable selfie taking drones, and we got crusty Tim Apple and Fredeggrirooo slapping some reflective UI elements (irregardles of actual complexity to get there code wise) and calling it "transformative experience". It is not.

Apple is becoming just another dying boomer brand...

You must be signed up for the public beta program. This week they released the RC (release candidate) version of the app. So if they don’t make any last minute changes, the one available now in the beta should be what everyone else is going to get Monday.
