Mobile me is probably the lamest of the Apple products. Don't get me wrong, the Mobile Me idea is great, but there are important things wrong and missing.
1. Loading/displaying an e-mail can be measures in portions of a minute rather than fractions of a second. This makes the e-mail client almost unusable, yet I have to use it 2 days a week at my work satellite, ugh. In comparison, MS Outlook Web Access wins all extremities down! (and I do not care for MS products in general...)
2. We have a family pack and is SUCKS.
2.a. Sharing calendars across accounts -not possible.
2.b. My wife's photo sharing has exhausted her 5 GB of storage, and I cannot increase the family members storage only the primary account holder, huh? I am willing to pay, want my $?

So few things badly wrong, but really badly wrong, and they have been badly wrong for the duration...

So, good riddance to the guy, hope Apple will hire someone more visionary for their one no-vision product...

What a ripoff. Grooveshark is free or $3/month for VIP and is on Android and Blackberry (iPhone pending).

Add more to that list:

* only one personal domain allowed
* no scripting ( i.e,. PHP or other )
* No mobile version of mobileMe
* extremely slow and unusable idisk - as always, Apple has never improved performance from day one
* expensive for the rather limited functionality provided.

Yet it didn't stop you from signing up...

I used it then and I use it now. It is a much different service now in terms of reliability. It got better when they introduced a new team, which I assume this guy was a part of the original team. Therefore, definitely not a loss to Apple. If he wasn't fired over the transition issue, I am sure Apple did not fight very hard (or at all) to keep him.

Actually MobileMe is the best service of its kind.

It might be more attractive if it were, free, though. but quite frankly, I'm more inclined to trust a paid service when it comes to these things.

I'm not sure it's the best of its kind.

However, it is pretty good at keeping my contacts & calendars synced on my family's 4 macs and 2 iphones. And for keeping bookmarks synced on the 4 macs and one office PC. For that alone it's worth the money.

As for iDisk, I put up with the many multiple file version problems and super slow syncing... until the day all my files disappeared then synced empty directories to all my macs, with no ability at Apple's end to restore. Good thing I had my own backup!

Then I discovered Dropbox, which:
- is FREE (up to 2Gb storage, which is more than enough for most people's necessary syncing requirements)
- syncs files PERFECTLY and near instantaneously
- gives me growl notifications if I want them
- only uploads/downloads the parts of the file that have changed (saving internet usage and increasing speed)
- keeps multiple file version history
- shows most recent files changes
- shows whether or not a file is in sync (with a tick on the file icon in Finder)
- even runs on PCs (sync Mac to PC if you like)
- runs on my iphone
- has a great web interface if you need to use it online

So it's Dropbox for files, MobileMe for all other syncing.

I agree with most of your issues. I too wish sharing of calendars across accounts was possible. I am not quite sure what you mean by the family pack "sucks." As far as email load times, I don't have any problems. But I also use safari as my primary browser. So maybe it has to do with the browser you are using? I know load time sucks in IE8. But surely no one here uses IE8 as their preferred browser. I, personally quit developing for IE. My sites redirect users to download Firefox or Safari (or really any other browser) to get full functionality (of course they can bypass it if they accept the disclaimer). If IE is the browser you are using for MobileMe at your work satellite, download Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Opera, or virtually any other browser and I think you will be surprised at the difference.

But I love MobileMe. I remember running back to my office in the snow after SJ announced .Mac. I had to have an account. I have lost 8 years of my life fixing sync problems. I blame this guy.

/kemal:mad:

The subscription music model hasn't been embraced by the masses for good reason. Most people have more media than they can consume. Music is vying for time with: podcasts, radio, tv, film, books and gaming. I'm not interested in paying 10$ a month to manage a music subscription.

Wow this board is SICK. Someone leaves Apple and they are immediately branded an incompetent fool!

I have to agree with Aidenshaw on this one. This reeks of a situation where a smart guy has good ideas and is continually getting stopped up, so he finally throws in the towel and moves on to greener pastures. It happens ALL the time. If Jobs had not been happy with his performance regarding Mobile Me, he would have been gone long ago. And if he were not a "good catch" I doubt some company would hire him on and publicize it that way.

It's possible that he didn't do a good job, but it is more possible (IMO) that he simply wanted to go somewhere we he could flex his brain power a bit more, and not be under someone's thumb 24/7.

I'm quivering in my shoes.

Its not that cold here.

Oh, you mean the service. Its another copy cat, only time will tell.

The guy is making some bucks now, the problem is while there is good management at Apple, its more than 1 person that makes it all happen. A single manager does not a business make.

If this thread isn't an example of fanaticism, I dont know what is.

So funny to read people's negative commentary about this relatively unknown "defector". Moreover, now the admission that mobileme isn't all it's cracked up to be.

The gentleman is likely already very wealthy, and perhaps was looking for a change or new challenge.

You all act as if you know the executive landscape at Apple and that no one would ever consider leaving the place. People leave jobs all the time. Get real...

What's with all of the negative comments? who uses Itunes to buy music anymore anyway? If this music subscription service is any good then I may cancel my subscription to Rhapsody and subscribe to this service. And no there are not that many music subscription services. Rhapsody and Napster are the only 2 that I can think of. Rhapsody has it's issues but it's the best out there. Music Subscription services are the future.

I use Safari on the latest OS version, and have had this problem ever since MM came out. Loading e-mail literally takes 7-20 seconds for each message to display...

It's quite possible that he argued strongly for a different approach
to the transition, but was overruled by higher ups in Cupertino.

In which case, while technically "responsible" for the transition,
he'd warned the execs that they were creating a train wreck,
and he's a good catch.

The pointy-haired bosses are always careful to have a "fall guy".

Actually all reports of the time reported that the MobileMe team vastly overstated how prepared they were and were taken over by the iTunes Store team in some form after the transition resulted in data loss. This guy isn't a "fall guy" if he was in charge of the team during the transition (which is implied by his years of tenure). Misrepresenting your project to the higher ups is a great way to create a train wreck.
