Can someone tell me how many Thunderbolt Controllers are in each respective MBP models (13" w/o Touch Bar, 13" Touch Bar, 15" Touch Bar)

I'm disappointed in many aspects of the new MBP 13". However, I really do wonder how many people need 4 full-speed TB3 ports. I'd like to hear some use cases where you'd be fully utilizing all of them at TB3 speeds. As someone else pointed out earlier in the thread, this is not the first time that ports on high-end machines (including the Mac Pro) have had different speeds.

I personally don't understand some of the comments that try to "justify" the lower specs of a product. What consumer would not want the highest specs for their product?

Wow. This ****ing company has gone THIS far huh.

I thought that the final save point for this MacBook Pro was that at least it's a powerful computer. But clearly, Apple went as far as to reduce the speed of certain ports to save some pennies. Unacceptable, Apple. A pro machine my ass.
I know, right!? I mean, SUPPOSEDLY the saving grace of these crippled crapbooks was they has these fancy-ass ports that (ideally) would be super useful one day when they supposedly become more ubiquitous. And 40GB/sec or whatever super high throughput it is? Sign me up! But now, we learn the ports themselves aren't all as good as Apple made us to believe!

Damn Apple, the price is too high  reduce the price, please

My Macbook pro from 2011 needs an upgrade :(

There is, and always has been and will be, a balance between specs, price, and what is technologically possible. The point is that this MBP has more "juice" in its ports than even the $3k Surface Studio and just about every other high end computer available today. If someone really needs 4 TB3 ports (still waiting for someone to give me a use case here that would actually require them; I'm sure such a case exists, but only for a tiny fraction of users), they can buy the 15".

Why don't they specify the bandwidth of the right side Thunderbolt ports?

To be honest, I don't mind if they're a bit slower but the lack of an SD card slot was a mistake.

As was HDMI imo. That's one thing I love about my current MBP. I can plug pretty much anything (well except Ethernet) wherever I go without needing to carry a second bag full of dongles.

It's not about justifying inferior specs but about not seeing the need to make a mountain out of a molehill. At the end of the day, the user experience is still there and that's what really matters.

Life isn't perfect. On one hand, you have Apple, who controls both the hardware and software, but sometimes uses this as an excuse to get away with bundling less specs in their products. On the other hand, the competition may have better specs on paper, but those specs don't necessarily come together to produce a better user experience.

Neither side is perfect. Pick your poison and move on already.

I understand the argument for multi-purpose ports and one-style-does-it-all.

However, why do we need 4 tb capable usb-c w 2 gimped? Isn't one full speed usb-c port good enough to connect to whatever tb3 hub you want to use?

So, you need a charging port too, might as well have one usb-c w tb3 support on each of L and R side. That makes sense. That way you can charge on either side and connect your hub on either side as well. I'm sure everyone would say that's an upgrade over magsafe on L and tb2 on R, assuming some sort of magsafe usb-c charging cable. That's a gain in functionality and in line with the direction Apple wants to go.

For the other two ports, why usb-c over usb-3? Is it a pure height limitation? Hard to believe that's the case, and with the iphone bulging for the camera. That move alone, at least on the 13, would have made so much sense to me since usb-3 is backwards compatible with usb-a which how 90% of portable devices charge and send data.

Is there any computer on the market today which does not come with at least one usb-a style port? It's the current universal standard and usb3 is more than adequate bandwidth for 95+% of regular use. Given that the 13" macbook pro doesn't even have full speed tb3 to 2 of 4 ports, but can max out usb-3, wouldn't this simple move alone make everything seamless and obvious for the non-technical user? Use those fancy new ports for fast stuff, the old ports for slower stuff or when you don't have a dongle available.

Also, why are R side ports slower than L side ports? Why not one fast port on each side and one slow port on each side? Because of fear that would be confusing? If so, why not visually identify the ports as different somehow?

No good reason to dump the card slot other than a money grab for storage upgrades but since everyone with usb-c is going to have a mini-hub anyway, I don't see that move as a massive f-u. It'd have been worse if they ditched the 3.5mm audio jack.

The perfect 13" macbook pro retina? It looks (and costs) a lot like a 13" air only with retina, edge-to-edge display (maybe room for 720p webcam at the top) skylake processors and usb-c instead of tb2, max mem of 32gb, max storage of 2tb. That would be a massive hit if it were available starting in the 1200 range for 8gb/256gb. It was obvious 3 years ago. Apple just doesn't want to make that product for some reason.

USB-A is the most used connector for charging peripherals, connecting iphones, thumb drives, mice, etc. Abandoning it in favor of 4 ports, 2 of which can't go faster than usb-3 anyway, and this L/R split personality in some vain attempt to drive industry to a massive usb-c adoption, well, that is just plain arrogance.

Apple has failed to push the industry on tb1 and tb2. There is no good reason to believe it will be successful pushing tb3. Their best option would be to at least make the hub themselves like they did with the tb display, and have it compatible with all of their mobile products, even if they don't want to make the actual display anymore.

I just don't see the point of 4 of the same ports w 2 gimped, that smells of marketing and some executive decision making rather than sound technical judgement. If you're going to have to plug in a dongle, why wouldn't you use a hub that has multiple ports for all of your needs rather than one dongle for each? Especially if you are worried about plugging into the wrong port and cutting your bandwidth in half.

There is a 13" available with 4 full lanes of TB3.
Yet you're still whining.
No whining here, friend. Make all models capable. How stupid, one side faster, the other side slower.

Poor design.

The irony being that a true "pro" will know which ports to use for their daisy chain of RAIDs and which ports to use for their mouse... If you're whining about two of four ports on one model not having full bandwidth, you're an amateur.
A true "pro" user need never think about such things. No amateur here. And not defending the ridiculous here either.

In years past, true professionals, as smacrumo... pointed out didn't have to worry or nitpick this stuff. They stuck a cable in and it worked. No thinking things true and balancing hardware. Even before Job's death, Apple was snubbing their Pro customers.

Pro pro pro pro pro it's not a pro device! I don't know how many times I've read that exact line from countless people on the internet. Can we just stop with it? It adds nothing to the conversation. At least other people are talking about the physical limitations of the chip.

Serious question -- What would you even plug into this computer that would need more than one full speed TB3 port, let alone 2 or 4? Monitors seem like the biggest thing, but the igpu can only handle so many pixels. dGPU on the second one?

Serious answer - your argument is for the present so can you guarantee that the need of these ports will not increase in the next year itself. Do you expect everyone to buy a new laptop then? Apple surely does.

Non serious comment - it's not a pro machine even though Apple got all the pros to line up and say nice things about the touch bar? You might think it is not but when I look at the MacBook Pro I think it should be a Pro machine.

Blame Apple. We're allowed to express our disappointment and frustration when we're getting treated like ****.

I think that at this point, it is safe to conclude that Apple isn't the problem. People like you are.

The issue isn't that Apple has changed, but that you people haven't. The mindset of the people here seem to be stuck in an era of Apple (roughly around the 2006 to 2011 period) that is long gone and will never return. And they appear utterly incapable of moving beyond that point.

Truth is, times have changed, and Apple too has changed in keeping with the times and the new challenges that follow. It's like walking into a French restaurant and complaining that it doesn't serve cheeseburgers.

You want what Apple can't and won't give you. I think the sooner you recognise and accept this, the better it is for you and everyone else around you.

I wouldn't buy a new Macbook Pro because of no embedded SD card reader, and the max 16 GB memory (seriously apple?).

I don't like that we're missing USB ports but I could work around it.

Also, the touch bar is nice but I think what Microsoft has done with the Surface Studio is much more innovative. Also, why not have the whole screen touchable.

I don't see myself with Apple much longer.

I'm a bit concerned to hear that some chargers might damage the laptop. Isn't the point of USB-C to be able to use any charger with any device, and they'll negotiate the best charging performance? Now we have to worry that some chargers might damage some devices?

We're back to the old days of AC adapters with those barrel plugs that all physically fit but might have incompatible voltage and polarity! WTF!?

You do realise how silly that sounds? Your air can't take what you throw at her anymore which means it was once suitable and now you suddenly need a 32gb powerhouse MacBook?

Yes, my post is correct. I changed jobs since 2013, and my work is highly based in a windows environment for coding in 3 VM environments.

Any other recommendations you have for me? You seem to know my life, I'm all ears.

Aw man, wtf...
