Yup. An emoji-selecting bar. That's all it is. No hyperbole there. And apparently no imagination not being able to fathom what it might be used for.

Fortunately, many other people with imagination understand the potential. Which was nicely demonstrated during the presentation.

Good luck!

I haven't commented on the touch bar with my personal opinions yet. Unless my memory is failing me now. Let's wait a few weeks and see what people say then. A lot of "It's awesome" or "It freaking sucks!" is hyperbole by people who've only seen a damn presentation. Get a grip.

Apple has always been driven by profits, considering that their products were never cheap to begin with. It just so happens that their profits came from selling excellent products that offered a great user experience.

I am not seeing much of a shift in this regard. I am using my 9.7” iPad Pro and Apple Pencil and AirPlaying them via my Apple TV in the classroom and am very satisfied with how they are working for me.

I guess I am not one to complain because I haven't really been affected by the dearth of new Macs in the marketplace and am someone who has greatly benefited from their renewed push in the iOS productivity area, having been greatly inspired by the likes of Federico Viticci who have successfully moved the majority of their workflows onto the iPad.

You have it 100% backwards. The philosophy was always about the user experience, and yes, you have always had to pay for that. But now the pursuit of pure profit/growth is all that rules.

Again, this is not an iOS vs macOS thing.

If it was all about profit they would have just done a CPU update rather than develop Touchbar...which whether you like it or not, is a focus on user experience.

The new machines are thinner and lighter which requires a complete redesign of the internals and retooling for a new body.

All of these developments are costs, not pursuing profit. A plain speed bump would have been the cheapest option.

You're still missing the point. Yes Apple is (more slowly than ever) still improving their products. We agree on that. What I'm talking about is the lumbering nature of a company with increasing complacency and lack of focus.

And then there's the unnecessary penny pinching, e.g. taking away the extension power lead? 5400rpm HDDs in iMacs? No USB 3 connection in the iPad Pro 9.7"? 5GB of iCloud storage? Move from 128GB to 24GB in 1Tb Fusion Drive? (until recently) 16GB iPhone etc etc.

This is Tim eroding away the little things that make up the overall user experience. Things that make it 'just work'. Things that made Apple, Apple.

No iPhone could be plugged into any MacBook out of the box ever....it never came with a cable. You had to have one or buy one. So buy a friggin' lightning/USB-C cable and find more important things to complain about.

The whining here is just hysterical. Not happy? Leave, buy a Surface, and shut up.

Of course every past iPhone could easily be plugged into MBA or MBP. They came with USB-A cables and aforementioned laptops had USB-A ports. It's not the case anymore.

This is forum. People come here for discussion. If you don't like to discuss opinions but rather prefer your own, leave this place and start a blog. In the meantime, welcome to my ignore list.

We also read what Microsoft announced for office regarding the touch bar. It'll improve workflows.

I should probably dump all of my stock and purchase some Micro'stock.
Base on this article alone, I would need 4 different dongles just to use these new Macbook Pros for my business.

I would be totally ok with this move if Apple included every dongle needed to make these laptop's usable. Would save $100 right there or at least include a USB C hub.

A few points:

  1. I think the latest version of Surface Book nails it! But it doesn't run OSX and it is modeled after the MBP with some improvements, like touch screen.
  2. The new extension cord missing is a good thing to me. I hated the big thick power cord which came with my earlier MBs and actually used the small wall plug adapter and never used the cord. If I need more length from an outlet I used a lighter weight extension cord. The truth is I normally run on battery except when at home or in hotel room. One of the features which drove me to Apple was their lead on battery life. My Sony in the day would last about 45 min at best while my first MB lasted 3 hours.
  3. I love having 4 USB C ports! I don't mind bringing a multi-port adapter in exchange for slimmer case. If they had dropped the headphone port I admit I would miss that. But I'd get over it.

I'm looking forward to getting my 13" MBP with the funky toolbar. I now will be able to adequately run a VM view as well as OSX at the same time (something my 2015 12" struggle with).

Thanks Apple.

PS. If you all think Apple has failed the PC market check out Microsoft's quarterly reports. Guess what they have the same issues!
Yeah the whole pc market including mac has been on the slide for quite some time.

When Steve is reanimated from cryogenics :(

There are three musts in new products: The new hardware (and software) must be more powerful, cheaper and significantly faster than the old stuff it replaces.
Are you high? When is brand new hardware ever cheaper from a premium company? Apart from the crazy "cheaper" part of that list the other boxes are ticked.

New MacBook doesn't have most recent gen Intel processors.
Will you please do your homework! The new MacBook Pro has the most recent processors available right now! I think this has been stated hundreds of times over the dozen articles since the new MBP was unveiled.

Initially, I was just annoyed that there is not at least 1 port on the left and one on the right that is exactly the same. My office is setup so the Mac cables would be out of the way if I could plug in and charge on the left side, so loved that all ports could charge. Originally reading the article that MR posted, again, originally annoyed me...not necessarily that this is the case, I spent 3k and assumed both sides were the same poets (exactly the same). After all, the keynote did make it sound like they were 100% identical (including speed).

Now, it doesn't bother me. At the end of the day, I'll only use a max of 2 ports anyway...for that 1 time ever where it might matter, it's not like it's not there for me to untilize.

I said on this forum that I wanted a Mac Pro, 13", thinner, lighter, smaller footprint, and only a little faster. They've achieved everything I wanted so it was really a no brainer to order...I didn't care if it had 4 thunderbolt 3...I would like at least 2, and apple surpassed that.
Refreshing to see an honest bash free post. Hope you enjoy your machine and that the 4 week wait isn't too painful!

Apple having magsafe removed truly sucks, but just for completeness there is a magsafe "alternative" for USB-C: https://9to5mac.com/2016/01/04/magsafe-adpater-12-inch-macbook/ - of course one more adapter, one more cable, and - you will have guessed it - once again additional cost ... not to mention how "cool" it is having that annoying adapter plugged in the port which will be disturbing during transport.

My current dream setup is a lenovo T-series laptop with a transplanted apple trackpad, running elementary OS linux and a windows 10 VM inside a virtualbox. i'm really starting to wonder if i could transplant my 2012 macbook trackpad into a new lenovo laptop. the only thing that kept me away from lenovo was the trackpad. elementary OS is as good as osx for me, really love that.

Yes I (and many others) will need dongles. In my case, I do photo and video editing with some equipment that has ports / connections that are not removable. New cables will work for some cases, but not all.

In Every "pro grade" powerbook / MacBook Pro ( that I can think of, and note I am omitting "MacBook") ever since the G3 models, there has been a stepping stone, mixing old ports with new. Last I checked, the new MBP is still far thicker than a standard HDMI port, SD slot, or , legacy USB port.

Mine is rarely home, and is running off battery 80% of the time, so I don't fit your complaint case. That said, I don't really feel I need to work out to carry my laptop. My camera gear, lighting, tripods, and other items could stand to lose some weight, but I don't have any expectations of that. My current retina MBP is lighter than my older non retina MBP, yet, I don't even notice it when carrying 2 cameras 4 lenses, and 3 flashes in one bag.
And carrying a wee adapter with a few USB ports and a SD slot, plus HDMI is now a pain for you?

I really am not sure I like the notion that Apple is trying to transition me away from MacOS, but you made a valid point that Apple marches to their own beat. If I don't like it, Microsoft or Google will be ready to welcome me with open arms. Whether we are prepared to going back to their intimate company, let alone enjoy it, is another matter entirely.
Apple has around 26% of the pc os market right now. Windows have just over half but they have many different manufacturers. Apple however have total control over their hardware and software in terms of profitability. I some how highly doubt they will abandon the macOS and hand over 25% market share to windows. Also windows 7 is still Microsofts most used OS. Windows 10 isn't all that!

List the 4 different dongles there please and I can guarantee you that all 4 will be on the one adapter on Amazon for under $50. Please do some research.

Nice devices, but getting too expensive. Also there is no reason 13" can't have 3 ports since 1 will be used for charging most of the time so that leaves 1 for everything else. Not acceptable in my opinion.

I found the keynote very uninspiring
I don't really care about this, most wouldn't I guess
if it wasn't for the long list of other irritations
slow Imacs, no new mini, no mac pro in over three years,
touch bar doesn't dazzle everyone, price bump for old hardware,
soldered ram, mac pro form factor, glued stuff, making upgrades impossible or a living hell
forced OS and program upgrades, forced hardware upgrades, etc ...
Hello again, it's a lot for a lot of people, so much people actually switched to windows
The machines aren't as bad as the negative reception, a lot of apple fans
including me just pin there frustration with apple computers on these pro's.

26 percent? Are you sure?
Thought it was still under 10 percent...
Here's my info and I think this could be for English speaking countries. Source was Wikipedia so not sure how credible it is.
