It's not "JUST 2 USB C" ports.

You have four TB 3 ports, any of which, or all, can be used as a USB 3.1 port. That's a total of FOUR USB 3.1 ports (each supporting up to 10 Gb/sec). Also, each of the four ports used as TB can support multiple daisy chained devices. They can also drive multiple external 5k displays, and your display can charge your laptop over that single data cable.
That's 15", 13" has TWO.

So what are you talking about? I'm no professional, designer or artist, i just like Mac and compared to my 2014 MacBook Pro this is a very painful downgrade in port department. Going from a separate charging port, 2 thunderbolt, 2 USB, 1 HDMI, 1 SD and 1 headphone jack to JUST 2 USB C ports is a downgrade and it's not even the same price.

To be fair it is not just 2 USB-C ports, it also has a headphone jack. Now granted it's only headphone jack and has no support for audio-in or SPDIF, but it's there none the less.

I don't have a problem with replacing all of those ports with only two USB-C, since I rarely ever use more than two ports anyway at one time. And HDMI is now USB-C native. If you need more ports then buy the the 4 port 13" model. And dongles don't bother me, in fact they give me incentive to upgrade my equipment. Mag-safe was revolutionary when it arrived on my 5 pound notebook, but frankly the dedicated charging brick was always a pain. But with lighter notebooks, and universal charging ports, and one charger for all of my digital gear when I travel, I couldn't be happier.

The one thing I will agree with you on is the loss of the SD card slot. That seems premature, as I use mine occasionally, and many use theirs regularly. Carrying around a card reader does seem like a pain for those who use it, and there aren't really any equipment upgrades that make it obsolete. So, it's really a shame.

When will the bad news stop?

You read MacRumors and buy a fully loaded 13" MacBook Pro at a great price 5 months before the new ones come out. It weighs a whopping 1/2 pound more but includes every port know to man at the time so no pesky adapters are required. It has MagSafe and a decent screen and if you are into this, the lit up logo. About 6 years ago I started doing this because Apple seems determined to push the envelope on eliminating features that still exist in other hardware to make their products somehow relate to the thickness of a pencil. How about putting the 1/2 back in and doubling the life of the battery. All day could then describe 20 hours instead of 10 (which in reality comes in at 8. Apple now thinks that all of their customers are editing videos all day and making "killer" presentations. The reality is that we use them the same way most of the execs do, spreadsheets, emails, record keeping, the occasional photo re work and then on weekends we text activity photos of friends/family. Apple seems to be ignoring the work-a-day world that wants some of these features but really needs a longer battery life.

That only further proofs that PRO in the name is for the lulz.

It's almost double what i payed for my 2014 MBP plus dongles. I'd say this is a solid NO.

Well, that's your choice and decision. Most people will buy the touch bar model and will enjoy having FOUR USB C ports.

If your 2014 MBP is meeting your needs, why would you buy the one just announced?

when MR and its readers decide to stop being negative nancies and haters?

Come on man it's not difficult, it's cause and effect;
When did Apple decide to start gimping their flagship computer?

It's put me in a conundrum. I'd rather not buy Windows machines but I might have to switch back.

I love to see how objective your post was instead of bashing.

For your card reader, what about something like this?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01C...+sd+reader&dpPl=1&dpID=31spP3+LCoL&ref=plSrch

There are some others, but looking something super light and not a lot to leave in a laptop bag.

Apple provides choices. It's up to you to choose the correct device for your needs.

This is funny. There is no choice here. I'm forced to buy the more expensive one if i need more ports when there is no reason that the least expensive model can't have 4 or 5 when the 2015 and 2014 had more than 2 ports even the least expensive ones.

That'd be great if computers didn't age. But when they do and you need a new one... well...

Rofl you're just on Apple Defense Patrol today aren't you?

Are you really that mad that people are criticizing your favoritest company in the whole wide world? :(
I'm not sure it's about the criticism, some people have great criticism. It's the people that say they'll never buy it post after post, because it doesn't have this or that...the thing is - that point is great, but it will not be for everyone.

Not true. The entry level 13"' model, the one stripped down for those on a budget and without the touch bar does. The regular 13" model has FOUR USB C ports.

It actually is a shame that they didn't position this model as a "transition" MBP with two USB 3 ports as well, especially since the infrastructure is physically there to support it.

And they have the right to say that. I'm actually one of them - I won't be buying a new MacBook any time soon. I can't bring myself to support Apple's new fashion-conscious nickle-and-dime donglefest mentality anymore. I just about accepted it for the iPhone 7, but to do it on a laptop is greedy. To do it on a "pro"-named laptop is downright hilarious.

Again, Apple offers choices. If you're a student light on cash and don't need the touch bar, and if two TB 3/USB C ports will meeet your needs, then you can save some money.

If you really need the ports and touch bar then you simply pay more and will then have a laptop that will meet your needs.

Same goes for buying a car, washing machine, house, table saw, stereo system, vacation, etc. Choice and options are good.

This is not a choice. other companies do the same. It's strategicaly placed in a way that will force you to buy a more expensive one even though performance wise the base is more than enough for you, but you will buy the more expensive one because ports are ****ed up one the base model on purpose. This is not new.

Yikes! Over 800 replies over a technical limitation with few bothering to try to understand the reason behind it.

If the quad-core only has 16 lanes, all of which are apparently used for the thunderbolt ports, what does the dGPU use?

This is a more accurate description of how the lanes are allocated. It all boils down to the fact that the dual core chip in the 13" has fewer lanes than the quad core in the 15":

The dGPU uses most likely uses x8 PCIe lanes, as it has in the past (check your System Profiler; under Graphics), which leaves x8 more lanes for TB3 (2 Alpine Ridge controllers @ x4 lanes each). This exhausts the CPU lanes. There are x16 PCIe 3.0 lanes in the QM170/HM170 chipset and Apple needs at least x4 lanes for the SSD/Flash, which leaves 12 for the rest of the various I/O in the system.

One could argue that Apple should have a quad core model of the 13", and that would be great if they could come up with a good thermal design.

That's true. I try to buy what I need and want.

For me, and if I was in the market, I'd get the 15" model.

Stop trying to disguise this as "choice." It's the same thing as offering 16GB then 64GB on the iPhones; people are forced to buy the top options because the lower one is frankly useless. It's an obvious example of "upselling" and you're trying to defend it.

Anyone reading this thread understands to technical reasons.

The irritation isn't about that, it's that Apple chose to put in 2 semi ports for aesthetic reasons while stripping out the ports people use every day.

You're acting like Apple had no choice but to put in four ports.

I wish they would have just slapped a retina display on the Mac Book Air and that would have created the perfect laptop !!!

Magsafe, SD card port, 2 x USB 3, Thunderbolt port, Apple logo lit, 12hrs battery and a nice soft keyboard !!!!!!

Apple had a winner and blew it big time

Tim and Jony should be ashamed of themselves
