I will miss MagSafe but think USB-C for power was a worthy trade off. Don't trip over the cord is all I can say.

I don't think I've ever tripped over my own MacBook Pro power cable so I'm not worried about myself. It's other adults and kids I have to worry about.

The first time someone's light, thin, $2,000 to $4,000 MacBook Pro goes flying out of their lap or off a table because someone else wasn't paying attention, I doubt they're going to be thinking of USB-C as a worthy tradeoff.

The irony is that so many of you are so caught up in the group-think here that you can't see that long-term, the new Thunderbolt 3 ports will greatly streamline connectivity on the MBP. Those of you who still want your HDMI, mDP, usb-a, magsafe, etc. would have a mass of cables connected to both sides of the MacBook any time you were set up with all these peripherals. With Thunderbolt 3 you can have a dock hidden away and 1 clean cable connecting to the laptop. Even cleaner than the iMac in the picture.

If USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 is the future, why isn't the iPhone using it?

I do have a question: of those HDMI 4K-out supported dongles, which of them supports 4K @ 60HZ (HDMI 2.0)?

Or does such thing even exist right now?

Many folks are using the word "dongle" as if previous MacBook Pros were highly expandable.

I am looking at one right now and it has 8 total:
  • 1 MagSafe
  • 2 Thunderbolt 2
  • 2 USB-A 3.0
  • 1 HDMI
  • 1 SD card
  • 1 3.5mm headphones
OK, if you happen to be using most of these ports, more power to you.

But I frankly use mostly 2 USB-A ports and 3.5mm headphones jack. And I often wish I can plug in at least one more USB device.

So for my usage, all I have to get for new MacBook Pros are USB-A to USB-C cables.
The only big loss here for me is the SD card. It's nice knowing that I'm never in need of a cable for my camera or a card reader.

Otherwise, I only use one TB port and MagSafe now as I use an OWC Thunderbolt dock for my MBP. And my MacBook situation is even better, I just have a OWC USB-C dock for it, so only one cable!

While I wish it were lower profile, Griffin makes a magnetic USB-C cable to replace Magsafe.

I'm willing to bet that if you told Apple you're not going to buy a new MBP without a free iPhone charge cable, they would give you one.

By the way, on another forum, I saw this:

"After the Hello Again event, a friend sent me a vid in which SJ talks about Xerox and "Toner Heads" and how he thinks that Apple now suffers from the same disease:

I came across this pic today on twitter: all the dongles that Apple sells. A lot of the functionality that your computer used to be able to do has now been delegated to expensive dongles.

Apple's now run by "Dongle Heads".
"

LMAO at Dongle Heads!!!!! And Apple should rename their Apple Stores to Adapter Stores.

From all accounts I'm the only one who's ecstatic about USB-C with thunderbolt and the fact the apple is removing all other ports from their computers. Just think of the result if the entire industry switches.
When connecting a peripheral to my computer I currently have to weed through rat nests or usb cables to find the correct ends.
I currently have in use.

Type A to Type B.
Type A to micro B.
Type A to micro-B Superspeed.
Type A to Mini B.
And the Vive even has a Type-A to Type-A

Then there are the piles of DVI, HDMI, display port, and mini display port cables of different lengths.

Also the box of adapters, DVI to HDMI, display port to mini display port, HDMI to CAT5 extenders USB extension cords and let's not forget power bricks for each of the different types of USB.

It might take a couple years to age out all my peripherals, but after that happens I'll have a box of one type of cable that will do everything.
Not only will clean up the rats nest, it will also reduce my luggage when traveling by eliminating all the different cables I have to take.

Of course, Apple will have to get rid of lightning port for my dream to come true

The seemed a more appropriate thread then the last time I made this comment

That's a lovely vision, but between now and that point in time is the source of this group whine.

How long did it take the entire industry to adopt Firewire? Or Thunderbolt 1? Or Thunderbolt 2? Lightning? 30 Pin? Etc. Will this be different (faster)? Else, the time between now and then is dongle Hell.

Same with the headphone ejection-to-wireless "the future" argument. That's a fine vision but how long until wireless is as good and ubiquitous as 3.5mm is now? Between now and then, it's dongle Hell... or just tolerating inferior audio quality and/or the inability to even connect if you don't have backups and/or dongles or wires with you.

Bottom line: for the all-important "thinner & lighter," the total weight of my laptop bag keeps getting heavier and heavier.

Oh come on guys, stop the whining.

How many actually have REAL-life experience? How many of you already use the retina Macbook? How many have used the Macbook Air of the first (or later) generation?

How often did you REALLY need adapters?

In almost 9 years of owning Macbook Airs, I've NEVER needed the ethernet adapter. I've used HDMI maybe once or twice.
[snip]
Seriously, you're making a mountain out of a molehill.

On my rMBP I use a Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet Dongle. Every. Single. Workday. And, I've done so for almost three years. Wait, huh? Why not WiFi? Well, WiFi has spotty coverage in some areas. And, the employer requires use of a VPN connection for all WiFi access (unlike Ethernet). Our WiFi also doesn't remotely approach gigabit speed.

Nope. The iPhone comes with a cable and a charger that you plug into the wall. Most people don't need to connect the iPhone to their computer.

If YOU want to connect the iPhone to your new MBP, you can get the cable. But Apple doesn't seriously want you to do that.

Even if you want to wifi sync iTunes with your iPhone, you first need to connect it physically to the macbook. I do some iOS development in my free time and I would need to buy a dongle to develop Apps for the iPhone 7... seriously?

And this is why you are not Tim Cook.
Apple has usage metrics on all their products. Now if their metrics say the majority of laptop users NEVER use ethernet, why include it ?

Seems there are 2 choices, those that need ethernet spend a few dollars to get it
OR
the majority get forced into paying for something they will never use.

Get used to the idea that you are NOT in the majority, your individual needs CAN be met, its up to you to buy the cables YOU need.

It's sold as a Pro product, Pros use Ethernet, Timecapsule uses Ethernet and is dreadfully slow over wifi or did you forget that product existed?
I want you to post a link that is based in fact and NOT made by Apple to state the 'majority of laptop users NEVER use ethernet' because according to you that's Apples metric....

I would even bet if Apple removed Ethernet off the iMac you would defend it...

Likely, because of the same conversations we're having right now! "Booo! Apple killed the lightning cable after only 4 years!" "I invested so much in accessories that Apple did planned obsolescence too!"

That said, I'm not convinced that the USB-C port is more durable for regular connect/disconnect use, in cars, airports, pockets etc., than Lightning.

What I don't understand is why they didn't add a female lighting port so that iPhone 7/7+ users don't have to carry two sets of earphones.
My guess, is because people also plug in speakers from their desktop which still rely on the original connector type, not the new style being pushed on iPhone...

I have no use for ports anymore. I have converted everything to wireless.

I don't connect the printer to the computer; it is connected through wifi
I don't connect external drives; Time capsule on the local network and icloud for offsite storage
I don't connect the phone; it syncs OTA
I don't connect the camera; I bought one with wifi capabilities
I don't connect a monitor; I airplay to the TV using ATV on the network
I don't connect a mouse or keyboard; they are BT
I don't connect a CD/Blu Ray drive, I am all digital and converted everything over years ago

Finally! Someone else who lives in 2016.

The fact that this article needs to exist for new hardware in 2016 is asinine.

At this point, I'm just waiting for Apple to release a gorgeous iPhone next year that only works on one carrier and you have to buy another iPhone if you decide to change to another carrier. That would be the equivalent step backwards for the iPhone that the new MacBook Pro is for the MacBook line.
We literally had that for years. And you're really really grasping at straws; at least as much as the strident Apple defenders are.

Unfortunately lots of these were designed with the 12" MacBook in mind, and thus block 2 ports on the MacBook Pros. Hopefully we'll start seeing more devices designed specifically with the MacBook Pro in mind.
