that the ipad can't run iMovie. It's only 8 months old and apple are declaring it functionally obsolete regards one of their two new flagship apps.

I appreciate the marketing strategy Apple use, but am really annoyed at the expectation we are to upgrade to use something so fundamental as iMovie on a large screen device which was screaming out for that functionality.

I expected the ipad to remain fully functional for at least two years like the iphone did.

Very annoyed...

I think there's simply not enough RAM in the original iPad unfortunately. :/

The original iPad may not have the power to run iMovie with acceptible performance. Also, the primary workflow is 1. shoot video on iPad, 2. edit video on iPad, 3. etc. Obvioulsy you aren't going to be doing 1. on iPad 1.

Anyway, it's a $5 app -- you can't expect everything for $5... A sub with everything maybe :)

Gb

I'm just happy GarageBand will work on iPad 1. Very excited about that of course I need to actually play with it, hope it's not just a "toy" and really works. I know it won't be full on, just enough to get some music going then transfer when I get home or when I'm just carrying my iPad around the house.
I know it can't be full on since all those samples add up to a lot of GB's and my iPad 64GB is full of movies.

Well, it doesn't to me :) I thought that iMovie would allow to edit not only movies shot by iPad/iPhone. I mean who would shoot movie on an iPad?

Who would shoot movies on a camera, load it onto a computer, then onto an iPad and edit it there instead of just editing it on the computer?

A dual core processor and 9x graphics power is heavy stuff for video editing.

Also, the iPad is about 10-11 months old now

This just in.. I was just looking at Ars Technica's writeup, and they have this:

Ars Technica said:
Apple representatives also confirmed that iOS 4.3 will be available for the original iPad, and that the new apps (iMovie and GarageBand) will work on the original iPad as well. "Obviously you won't be able to import video to iMovie in real time on the original iPad," one rep told us, "but you'll be able to do that through the USB camera kit. Probably."
(emphasis added)

So...I realize Apple's website says it will require the iPad2.. Maybe the people Ars talked to are just wrong? It keeps hope alive, for at least a little while.

Except people could have bought brand new iPhone 3G's from Apple as recently as 9 months ago. ;)

Yup, and they can still buy 3G(s) models now. Honestly, my 3G only barely handled the iOS 4 upgrade, though it saw improvement to near-original speeds when 4.2 came out; I could easily see this next version as simply too much demand on too little capacity on a 3G.

The 3G(s) is also a significantly faster model than the 3G (no 's').

For consumers mainly...and for pros? Good way to crank out quick ideas on the go, when your not at your main video editing workstation.

Same goes with GarageBand.

Apple had to design the CDMA version of iOS to not simultaneously let you use Data and Voice because that's impossible with verizon
That's nothing new for Apple. Ever tried to use voice and data at the same time on EDGE? Every first generation iPhone had this limitation.

Can someone say it with me…?
FUH-RAG-MEN-TEH-EEE-SHION.

Then again, 4.2.6, 4.3…I don't think it should pose too big of a problem in terms of development.

And can someone say THIS with me... "No...."

I see a few of you are already trying to be cheeky and use the word fragmentation in the same vain as we saw all the reports about the different flavors of Android last year. That's not the case at all, you know it, and you can stop now.

This is much ado about nothing. The biggest part of this is that the AT&T customers who felt grumpy when their iPhones didn't immediately support the hotspot function when the Verizon iPhone began to ship, will now have that feature.

As far as differences in the software... duh! There are two separate (but similar) radios utilizing different frequencies, so of course at SOME level (probably way down in the 1s and 0s of the code) there will be minor differences. I'm sure that the Verizon folks will get the increased Safari benefits soon.

So to recap, NO fragmentation-especially the kind Android suffers from, and YES Android is still 2nd fiddle to iOS.

Enjoy your HTC.

Thank you! I'm glad someone here is using their head. Why would you want to put iMovie on your iPad1 to begin with? You can't save movies from anywhere. The only way you can get movies in to the camera roll is to sync them from iPhoto. At that point, just use your computer to make the movie.

You can't save movies from anywhere.
Actually, you can. I can plug my 720p Flip camcorder into my iPad 1 and download the video for playback and transfer into my PC at home. I could see a use for iMovie in the original iPad.

What is the "biggest" part is a matter of opinion. What's biggest for me is the improvement in AirPlay. Pretty annoyed I won't be getting that when everyone else does.

Wow, it sucks that they drop support for the iPhone 3G (not 3GS).
My and my wife's 3G iPhone is still working... although using 3.1.3 due to iOS 4.x being too slow on it.
I really wanted to stream music from my PC and Mac to my 3G... but I guess the announcement was too good to be true, before reading the fine-print.
I have NO REASON (other than software limitation now) to buy a new device. Mine still works.

In the event, didn't he say it would be universal?

Nope. Universal means one app for phones, touchs and iPads.

Ie if you bought it for your phone or touch you don't have to buy it again. Which is the way Apple prefers all apps. But they have yet to force it anymore than forcing the 'upgrade via in app' preference

Who needs a computer to get the movies onto the iPad? You can get the movies onto the iPad with the camera connection kit. iMovie would be useful to anyone with a video capable camera and an iPad 1.

No 4.3 for Verizon is bizarre. Wonder what's up with that.

Here is your answer. Verizon has a very long internal QA of any firmware update. This is mostly done to discover any back doors that may be placed in ROM updates by third party contractors employed by the device manufacturer. Yes, it has happened. It also checks for anything else that can alter network traffic issues such as odd, heavy data bursts.

Verizon iPhone users, learn to live with this, when you see an iOS upgrade, the release for Version phones sometimes goes out as long as six months.

There looks to be a mic over the facetime camera, I wonder if that is either used for noise cancelation and/or is used when using the rear camera probably.

Here is a screen shot from the iPad 2 video @54 seconds.
