So iPhone 4 can run iMovie and iPad 1 can't ? What is the difference exactly except 256 RAM?

Processor speed aside, RAM is required when doing any type of video editing on any platform. The iPad 1 only has 256 compared to the iPhone 4's 512. It would run on iPad 1, but not with the performance Apple would like it to have.

On a side note, I see Gizmodo is spreading rumors about iPad 2 only having 256 RAM. Although I will agree that Apple does always include "just enough" in the RAM department, the fact that they acknowledged that iMovie runs only on iPad 2 & iPhone 4 signifies to me that it has the same 512 found in the iPhone 4.

We won't truly know until iFixIt tears one apart, however... Let's hope for heavens sake that they through in the 512.

that the ipad can't run iMovie. It's only 8 months old and apple are declaring it functionally obsolete regards one of their two new flagship apps.

I appreciate the marketing strategy Apple use, but am really annoyed at the expectation we are to upgrade to use something so fundamental as iMovie on a large screen device which was screaming out for that functionality.

I expected the ipad to remain fully functional for at least two years like the iphone did.

Very annoyed...

What is the point of coming out with new hardware line the dual CPU A5 processor unless it can do things the old A4 could not. You should expect the new iPads to do things the old iPads can't

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

If it works on iPhone 4, it should work on iPad. Another lame attempt by Apple to get you to buy new hardware.

Can someone say it with me…?
FUH-RAG-MEN-TEH-EEE-SHION.

Nice try, but sequential released by a single company is in no way the same kind of fragmentation already seen the Android world. For god's sake, there are already 6-month old Android phones that are being abandoned by their vendors in a quest to sell them a newer model.

False equivalence.

One site I saw speculates it's the same as the iPod touch, meaning 960x720 which would suck. At these price points, the rear camera should have at least 5 megapixels. Slight disappointment it doesn't have the LED flash either, since they're pimping it as a great video solution.

By 'at these prices' you mean 'so cheap that no competitor has even shipped a product, let alone one in the same price range?'
The front camera is there for Facetime to show the other person what's going on, or possibly to assist AR apps... not to act as a high end Nikon. The device is too big to be stable for any decent photography.

I WANT EVERYTHING, FOREVER, FOR FREE!!!!
<stomp footsies in tantrum here.>

AT&T gets 4.3 and a useless network.
Verizon gets 4.2.6 and a network that works!

You forgot that ATT gets simultaneous voice and data and Verizon doesn't.

Meh, seems like a tossup to me.

You're missing the point. Which is that if it can run on another device with the same CPU and ram, it should be able to run on the original iPad. Unless there's some reason nobody has thought of, it looks like it's a marketing limitation and not a technical one.

Artificial obsolescence IS a bad thing.

"At these prices"

Sorry if I am looking at this wrong, but the ip2 now has additional features and new software at the SAME prices as ip1.

In most other industries adding things to products costs more and the price goes up. So, by not increasing the price and giving more the actual price IMO went down. And, 4.3 is FREE!

People bitch about a product that no other company dreamed up and is barely a year old.

As always make your own perfect product or don't buy an ipad.

There is nothing better at these prices per today!

Apple did the same thing with the iPhone 3G when releasing the much faster 3GS a year later. Games came out that only had effects for the 3GS. This is normal. You and I may not like it but it's the way technology works. This is a bigger upgrade (dual core) than I thought it would be honestly.

Does anyone know if iMovie will be a free update for people who already purchased the lousy iPhone version? I think it should be offered that way.. but then again it's Apple..

They said it would be a universal app during the keynote. So yes, it will be an update.

Fragmentation. It Begins.

All kidding aside, possibly something they need to work out with the carrier or they have something up their sleeve. I doubt they would leave features out like that. Apple like streamlined products and everyone sharing the same user experience.

Wow, it sucks that they drop support for the iPhone 3G (not 3GS).
My and my wife's 3G iPhone is still working... although using 3.1.3 due to iOS 4.x being too slow on it.
I really wanted to stream music from my PC and Mac to my 3G... but I guess the announcement was too good to be true, before reading the fine-print.
I have NO REASON (other than software limitation now) to buy a new device. Mine still works.

If you're happy with your iPhone 3G running 3.1.3, then why are you concerned about not getting the upgrade from 4.2.1 to 4.3? It's not like they're coming to your house and taking your phone away.

As for me, I'm running 4.2.1 on my iPhone 3G, and I'm a little disappointed to not be getting any new features, but the upgrade from iPhone OS 2 to iOS 4.2.1 has made a HUGE difference to my phone, making it a much better phone than when I bought it, so I can't figure out why I'd complain. I'll get an iPhone 5 and run iOS 5 on it when I want to. Until then, it doesn't matter if I'm getting no new upgrades.

I agree. A bit quick to have apps that won't work on iPad 1, but yet work on an iPod Touch 4gen.

I hope you're wrong

Here is your answer. Verizon has a very long internal QA of any firmware update. This is mostly done to discover any back doors that may be placed in ROM updates by third party contractors employed by the device manufacturer. Yes, it has happened. It also checks for anything else that can alter network traffic issues such as odd, heavy data bursts.

Verizon iPhone users, learn to live with this, when you see an iOS upgrade, the release for Version phones sometimes goes out as long as six months.

I hope Apple's unique control over its OS proves otherwise. Unlike other mobile OS's whose updates are released by the service providers, Apple manages its own updates distribution. Even if Verizon's approval is necessary, I doubt Apple would have partnered with them if Verizon reserved the right to delay product improvements and cause unnecessary fragmentation. After all, we bought Apple phones --not AT&T phones nor Verizon phones.

Camera Specs Update

Well, according to the Washington Post, the back camera is not the same as the iPhone 4's.
...the iPad 2's most interesting components have to be its front and back cameras. Neither will replace your camera or even your phone's camera for still photography. The front-facing camera has a VGA (640 by 480 pixel) resolution, while the back one offers a higher 720p (720 by 1028 pixel) resolution. The front can focus automatically; the back has a fixed focus...

So it's slightly more pixels than the iPod touch which is 720 x 960 whereas the iPhone 4 is 1695 x 2346. Big disappointment, plus no LED flash and fixed focus.

The insistence for Verizon to keep their own internal QA is what kept the deal dragging so long. You are not going to see an updated Verizon ROM til this summer.

Not buying this. Apple is driving the bus here ... I can't see them bowing to Verizon on this as it directly affects the brand image. More likely is this is an internal Apple thing.

Don't buy it. Keep the rose glasses on if you like it. I know Verizon at the corporate level. Steve didn't' have as much reality distortion as in AT&T.
