So...you're not buying Tiger, and you already have iLife? Sounds like you're set. There's no reason for Apple to include any part of the iLife apps. If they're using them right now, that means they have a copy (be it from the free versions or from iLife). If they're not currently using iLife or any of the iApps, they're not likely to miss it all of a sudden with Tiger. People with older Macs can still use iMovie 3 and iPhoto 2 (sorry about switching the version numbers in my last post). The newer versions have higher system requirements, so they'd need a new(er) computer anyhow.

If you have any version of iMovie or iPhoto now, you can keep on using it with Tiger (even the old ones that were included with Panther). If you want newer versions than what you have, you have to buy them. If you don't have any version of them at all, that means you're still running Jaguar and have heretofore expressed no interest in iLife or your system can't support it.

I have iTunes 4.7.1, iPhoto 2, and iMovie 3, although that doesn't really satisfy me. In fact, I am saving for a new iMac G5 right now. Furthermore, I took up video editing about three years ago, and now I enjoy it so much that I'm getting FinalCut Express. Additionally, I could REALLY use iPhoto 5, as my mom is buying a new camera and wants me to sort her photos. iDVD would be a timesaver to have. Since I am doing a lot of video editing, I need a quick and simple way to send my videos to people, and tapes don't cut it. I never have never really used GarageBand before, although I downloaded 100 free loops from .Mac, and since I have been using them for my videos. Needless to say, iLife is useful to me and would be more so when I begin my drive laughing all the way to The Apple Store to pick up my iMac G5 Superdrive.

(PS: It's okay about the iPhoto 3. People do that all the time.)

odd..

I just ordered and recieved a PM G5. I have both a restore DVD, and an iLife05 DVD.

Did you only get 1 Restore disk?

After iLife '05 was released, all hardware that did not have it pre-installed had the disk thrown in to the box. After that initial batch, iLife '05 came preinstalled and on the main restore disk.

It's amazing how Apple has managed to move the user base over from OS9 with the minimal of pain and frustration, with the exception of the inept people who run Quark. Tiger *should* ship without Classic support.

I think Tiger will be awesome!! I will order it long with a X800XT next week when my student loan comes in!! :D

Cant wait :p

I think all of Tigers new (main) features are going to be amazing, but I am also looking forward to discovering all of the less obvious workflow enhancements and improved performance in general. I have one BIG hope for Tiger and it is that repairing permissions after an install/update is done automatically by either OSX or the installer or whatever. This was (briefly) rumored to be an upcoming feature many months ago, but I have not heard anything of this since, so wont be holding my breath!

I also have a gut feeling that Apple will release iTunes 5 around the end of April. I just hope they will finally include my NO 1 feature request. Hierarchical Playlist Folders!!!!!!!:eek::eek::D:p

Cheers

My powerbook should be arriving sometime next week. Very excited, as this is my first mac and first time of really using Panther. Cant wait til April 29th, should be good, knowing how much better Tiger is than Panther.

That is fantastic OwenMan. You're gonig to love Powerbook, and Tiger will make it even better. However, you won't dislike Panther by any means, while you wait on Tiger. It is fantastic as well.

not that i really use it, but i have seen no mention of Classic in the Tiger promo info?

is it still going to be an installable option with Tiger?
yeah... what ABOUT Classic? God, I sure hope so.

More classic users than OS X users

patseguin said:
Who really cares about Classic anymore? Shouldn't everyone have transitioned by now?

Did you know that there are still more OS 7 thru OS 9 users than OS X users? I know that it is hard to believe but even by Apple's numbers less than 50% of all Apple users have adopted OS X. Of course most of those users are also using ancient hardware as well.

I used to do the same but now I realise...

I would rather pay an extra £10 or however much, and get free NHS and not have to worry, than pay a little less in the US and as many people in the US are, have to worry about how to pay for health costs. Simple really.

I understand Apple also take a little more, but come on, lets stop complaining please.

Off topic: the NHS is not free, John. Are you a taxpayer? Do you know what National Insurance is? Have you recently used the NHS health service? Do you know how long you have to wait to get seen? Have you had any dental treatment recently? If so you'll know that it isn't free and is in fact eye wateringly expensive for anything beyond basic treatment.

Don't get me started on the NHS pal, this has nothing to do with Apple pricing! ;-)

That's an amazing factoid. Almost hard to believe, when Steve has commented that the switchover to Mac OS X has been the fastest ever.

Back on topic: like most people I pre-ordered Tiger the moment I could. After then spying the Up-To-Date programme, and having bought a new PowerBook at work recently, I thought I'd give it a go. Low and behold, the on-line validator accepted the serial number and I now have the upgrade package pre-ordered too. One thing though - the PowerBook was purchased in *February*! Heh heh!

Take-up of Windows XP has been even worse AFAIK, so a 50% take-up is indeed good going.

Really? It's hard to believe. ONTH, that's promising because most of those user have to buy new Macs sometime. This will give enormous boost to Apple's hardware sales. Sooner or later every Mac user will be on OS X.

That or they'll have to switch to Windows because the software they use wasn't developed for OS X. We're pretty close to that boat right now, We can easily move to OS X in our high schools but some of the elementary software that has been deemed "Absolutely needed" by the administration will run on OS 9 and WinXP but not OS X.

I know a lady who uses System 7 and 8. haha. :)

upgrade....pfft

I just purchased a new powerbook on March 30th and I don't qualify for the upgrade price. I drop $2500 on a new comptuer and 30 days later I have (well don't have to) to drop another $120 for the latest OS....kind crappy that they limited the upgrade to April 12th and after.

So how does the whole "5 computer limit" work on the family pack, do you need to register each Mac or something?

Also the Tiger night is on the 29th at 6pm, I thought the stores closed at 6 which would mean no gap in between, people said they had to queue in the past for the release of Panther etc. am I missing something?

I understand there always has to be a cut-off date. However, the day of announcement seems too harsh. The software company where I work has always used a 30-day back cut-off for free upgrades. I always thought that was reasonable. Although, from the sounds of it, Apple is willing to bend a little on their cut-off date if a customer politely complains. I would give it a try, it certainly couldn't hurt.

Very anxious... First Mac on the horizon!!

I can barelly wait until late May, when my first Mac is arriving, a 1.42 MacMini. I wondering if Tiger will be preinstalled...

I always have wintel computers, and now, with Mac Mini launched, I'm one more "switcher"... I'm positive that I'm doing the right thing now...

Here in Brazil Mac's are very expensive... one Mini like mine costs R$ 3 400, or US$ 1 300, in todays exchange. So, you can figure out how dificult is for us, brazilians, to buy a Mac... and I'm not mentioning the dificult to buy apps or upgrades... it's a very restrict public...

Just one more month between me and my first Mac...

Huges for all.

Fábio.

my hospital is very quick and effecient, Oldham Royal if you must know. my girlfriend went in for a checkup just a few weeks ago and where it usually took 5-6 hours in Ashton and Manchester to be seen, it only took 1 hour.

beauty of england is that you can go free (well not strictly free, but a tramp can get treatment) if you want. but if you want to pay you get amazing service. ie. Bupa! who are very good i must say. and my local dentist is NHS and is fine. checkup every 6 months. no massive waiting list. its just city slickers who have busy hospitals :p get out to the country

weeeell i dont qualify for a free update, ho hum! its only ~£50 for students :)

Your Mac will ask you during the installation process to register the new software.

If the local Apple Stores do the same as the Panther release, then they will probably close at 4pm. That gives them time to install Tiger on all the floor Mac models. Set out the new display, posters, & Tiger boxes. They also will have a meeting prior to reopening at 6pm. Was able to observe most of this since my wife and I stood first in line last time.
