Tiger Build 8A351 Sceenshots

Spotlight doesn't seem like a WOW inducing feature. I know that currently I only search my computer extremely rarely... perhaps 2 - 4 times a year?

IMO, Spotlight, alone, is worth the price of Tiger.

Possibly, the reason that you currently search so seldom, is that the current search is limited to text content and is very slow.

Spotlight is not limited to which file types it can search, and it is very fast, as Steve demoed.

If some 3rd-party application has a proprietary file type that they want to make indexable/searchable by spotlight all they have to do is write an importer (Fairly simple & Apple provides examples). Apple provides importers for most common file types.

Whenever any file is added/updated Tiger will look for an importer for that file type & invoke it.

You say you search 2-4 times a year. Do you ever google the web?

Well, Spotlight is like google, only:

1) for local files (at least forfor now)
2) more intelligent (knowledgeable) of file content
3) fast as smoke

I think that Spotlight will be one of those things that you say:

"I wonder how I ever lived/worked without it!".

This kind of searching was decomitted from Longtooth until 2006 or later.

Companies like google are jumping in to fill the void and provide a (more) comprehensive local search for Windows systems, until it arrives in the OS.

An interesting possibility is this:

1) Spotlight is built externally to the OS X file system
2) OS X plays nicely with Windows file systems on the same network

Conceivably, then, a Mac running Tiger, on a network with Windows, could use Spotlight to index and search Windows files.

Here's a link with more details about Spotlight

The images are interesting - but they don't increase my eagerness to buy Tiger (I've already been convinced by what Apple has on their Mac OS X page). Unlike most of you, I only have 2 Macs to update - but that still means I'll be buying the Family Pack. (One of those Macs does NOT belong to me - it belongs to another family member.)

Long time lurker, first time poster. I couldn't agree more on the usefulness of the spotlight search technology. I believe alot of users are more visually stimulated with increased "eye candy" than actual usefulness under the hood. Tiger is without a doubt the most advanced release in Mac Os history. Take for instance the core image technology. This isn't just a feature for more ripple effects and window animations. In time the whole gui can be offloaded to the graphics chip which will have a profound impact on overall system responsiveness. Preliminary support is being included for a resolution independent user interface. Imagine being able to see every pixel of a 5 megapixel image, on your powerbooks, without having to use binoculars.

The spotlight technology seems hardly revolutionary now because we are used to a file/folder based system. When Steve Jobs spoke of this being the next revolution in computing it wasn't just some of his Rdf induced rhetoric. Once we begin using spotlight , I suspect that as Jobs said, many of us will hardly ever use the Finder again. The ability to track all correspondence with a particular person over several years with the touch of a button is just amazing to me.

Perhaps i'm in the minority here, but i am drooling in anticipation for Tiger!
This is by a recent switcher of windows i might add. :)

Wow, so with my mirror, ~1.5GB of tiger pics were downloaded yesterday. About 400MB of that was downloaded in the 10-11 hour. Good job guys! :) Yay for no bandwidth limit.

Edit: To anyone who needs macrumors related space for pics such as the ones in this thread (not personal pics or avatars) feel free to pm me about it.

Exactly!

I keep forgetting-- anytime you do a Spotlight search, you have the option of saving it (the search and its results) as a smart folder.

Then, any file that is added/updated/deleted is automatically included in the smart folder if it meets the search criteria.

So, if you search for "Bob Jones" and save it as a smart folder, it will automatically catalog any reference to "Bob Jones"

You never have to search again & know that the smart folder is always up to date and contains every reference to "Bob Jones"

Great shots. I'm still not sure if I'm going to pick up Tiger or not though, Panther is running awfully fine for me. ;)

An extra incentive to get Tiger is the fact that Apple have admitted that it's the last of the yearly update cycle; Tiger's successor may not be til 2007.

In that case maybe I'll wait a year after its release and get Tiger for a lower price, or as part of a money-saving combo with iLife '06...

I had read something somewhere sometime (wow, indefinite!) that suggested that with Tiger users would become independent of the computers, that users would be able to remote login.

I'm not sure if this is true of Tiger Client... but you can already do this if you are running Panther Server on a machine. They may add it to Client, but that would be a surprise as its a big sell (imnsho) for OS X Server.

#1 It's a minor thing, yes, But don't reveal localization. If Apple decides to go on a witch hunt, flying the Union Jack in your menu bar, showing that your currency is the "British pound sterling" and documenting that you use the european time server isn't exactly going to widen the pool of people they have to search through.

- IG

You do realize that the picture-poster may have simply changed his localization to union-jack country precisely to throw off the folks trying to hunt him down, yes? He could be in the land of the rising sun for all you know. As for that lone AIM-id, I think it's another red herring thrown in
deliberately to confuse the trail.

And of course this message simply is yet another layer of obfuscation. Do you believe me or no? :p

Always nice to see the "Application has inexpectedly quit working" screenshot!

Note, that the application quit-- not the system.

Kinda' looks like it is close to release, tho!

could the "dictionary & thesaurus" app be an interface for the built in dictionary and now thesaurus (idk if that is tru of a thesaurus in the OS, could someone check that) in the OS? The Widget one that Steve showed off at the expo I would assume is connected to on online dictionary/thesaurus resource (ie... http://dictionary.reference.com). Would this not make sense?

UPDATE: I looked at the 'Dashboard" site on apple and found that the widget interfaces with the built-in dictionary/THESAURUS in the OS. YA!

Good point; this would include mirrors wouldn't it? :( I'd guess that all of us without developer accounts won't see another glimpse of Tiger until it is commercially released because all of the lawsuits we will see against the people who mirrored these Tiger pictures.

are you talking about a 30" powerbook? :D seriously, current 15" powerbook has 1.1 megapixel display - you're talking about seriously badass display, no matter if it were 15" or 30". i'd really like to have one... wow... 5MP in 15", that'd blow my mind :)

Looks pretty cool.

One thing I can't wait for is Automator. I am continually converting medical images from .pict to .jpeg (original images are screenshots off an old G3 running Os8) , inserting them ito mail addressed to the same person with the same text in them.

So, if the system has its own dictionary, could we take advantage of it by defining words in a file with a right click and choosing an option from the menu? That would be sweet. Make it act just like the spelling tool, except we can define words we type or words in documents and webpages.

Actually this functionality does exist, the Omni Group has a free dictionary client available for download, it's called OmniDictionary and is callable via Cmd-= or from any app's Services menu.

If you desire to have your own dictionary, then there's a free DICT server that exists: http://www.ropersonline.com/dict/

Just a sidenote...
For all the people that are wondering if the mac mini will run tiger once it is released I say it will definitily. The reason I believe this is because I ran a pre-release version of tiger on my ibook (8mb Video) Even dashboard worked just not as smooth as someone with a better video card
