This just goes to highlight how limiting Airtags are. They're only good for findling lost items, but are worthless for something that is stolen.

One example if an item is moved when it has been sitting still and away from the linked phone, it beeps. Completely the wrong approach. If a theif moves the item wtih an AirTag on it, the AirTag literally lets them know where the AirTag is hidden. Instead it should give a silent alert to the associated phone so th owner knows something has been moved. How dumb can Apple be?

Then there is the well know feature that alerts someone if an AirTag is moving with them that is not their AirTag. Great for anyone concerned about stalking, but then it cannot be used at all to help recover lost items from a thief.

Therefore after initally buying a three pack of Air Tags, I won't but them again. They are mostly junk.

And that's all Apple ever claimed they were for; to find lost items. Alerting people of an AirTag in their vicinity isn't just for anti-stalking, it allows normal, decent people to help locate a lost item and possibly contact the owner and have it returned.

It's just asinine to think something's "junk" because you want to use it in a way that it was not intended and it doesn't work.

This makes the Tile device actually usable. The Airtag is a toy with little value.

The $1M fine is unenforceable and is good only for clickbait adverting. But the ID requirement will work. If the Tile is very closely tied to its owner, then its owner would not want to be caught, and the biometrics makes it easy to prove who did it.

As said, these are now MUCH better than Apple's device. Even if the $1M fine is just a PR stunt.

Many issues with this...

1. A vindictive ex gets a hold of your anti-theft Tile and claims they "found" it and accuses you of stalking.

2. Attach the Tile to a fake item, plant in car or bag, if caught, stalker can claim the item was stolen and they were just tracking it to recover it.

3. Are you really going to hand over that much personal data to a company that makes tracking devices?

What biometrics? Who is giving their biometrics to tile? Do you work for Tile?

My AirTags are super useful. If for no other reason than peace of mind. A recent world trip, it was so good to see my suitcases were at the airport after several flight transfers.

I always got a ping within 5-10 minutes showing where they were.

You won’t get that working like that with tile. Or maybe there are baggage handlers walking around with tiles in there pocket to make sure we get a hit?

It was tongue in cheek. Shows how ridiculous it is. Can you imagine what would happen if Apple demanded your Gov ID to use AirTags?
Yeah I knew it wasn’t a serious comment. I am not giving my ID to any company, including Apple for a lost item tracker. It just shows desperation by Tile.
I use/own 4 AirTags, one with my car keys, one with my carry on bag, and one with my laptop, and spare for checked bags.

I had to scour the internet for hours and only found one example of someone finding stolen property. Can you believe that? ONE EXAMPLE!! /S

I don’t think tile is allowed (in Europe) to collect so much information about their clients. The combination of name, address, biometric data, Id copies and the fact they can trace your movement everywhere makes for one giant hack waiting to happen and be exploited in unforeseen ways.

Same here but split 2 each with the missus. Qantas lost her bags twice last year and she could see they were in Northern Queensland and Melbourne. She was in Sydney.

Remember the recent Anker-Eufy fiasco?

Many times, these “security-monitoring” companies that claim they are the best in the world…. end up being the worst creepiest offenders.

What if somebody steals my Tile and uses it to “stalk” someone? How could they possibly prove that it wasn’t stolen from me and planted on someone without my knowledge? Ridiculous.
Pretty sure the Tile will be registered to your account. Even if it gets stolen the thief can’t just register it to their account. If it gets planted on someone without your knowledge, the thief cannot track that person without having your Tile username/password. So what will be the point?

Why would government send you to jail? Good luck charging some one, let alone prosecuting, getting jury to convict, and send some one to jail. The whole freaking trials of much more serious crimes have been pushed back for years after Covid.
You do know that jail is where you go before the trial and prison is where you go if convicted.

The point is that this might be the defense of the person that used the Tile to stalk someone — they didn’t know, someone stole it and used it to get them in trouble, etc. — the “thief” is imaginary.

Yes... and I use Eufy security cameras, but don't use their services. So I'm good.

“which include a $1 million fine if the device ends up being used to track a person without their consent.” Isn’t tracking a criminal with you bag exactly this, tracking a person (criminal) without consent.

I think the scenario is... I take your anti-theft Tile and plant it on someone. I have no intention of tracking anyone, I just want to try to get you in trouble by being accused of "stalking".

Or conversely, as a stalker, the above is my excuse as to why I'm not guilty of it. Someone stole my tracker and planted it. I didn't put that there.

No one is staying in jail waiting for a trial for a petty theft. Heck most cops don’t even investigate or charge for theft. You can give the coordinates of a stolen IPhone or laptop, good luck Cops doing something about it. Stalking is an entirely different thing, you need to go through restraining order, prove there was a harm before any one is charged or ends up in prison.
Watching a show on Netflix is all fun, but doesn’t really happen in reality.

A quick google search is more relevant than Netflix

Yes this does make them totally useless in a way. You can usually find things in your house or car etc you’ve lost. But if you lose them outside your own general places you visit, they’ll beep as you say to scream to everyone, hey I’m over hear and lost! Not a good solution.
