Steve was never in it for the money that’s why he stuck with it so long. He barely had furniture in his house. Tim will for sure step down and enjoy his bags of cash
Well I guess after the first few billions you aren't doing it for the money anymore. Being a CEO was like his whole life. The money he got from Disney buying his shares of Pixar alone were worth a fortune. But he did enjoy the money and he did spend it, he was having a custom super yacht built. He was living like a billionaire when he died. Tim Cook though has been CEO at the head of a post-iPhone Apple much longer than Jobs. Cook's net worth is meant to be about 2 billion dollars, you'd think it would be much more than that. But maybe 2 billion is enough, and maybe if Cook was hungry for ownership and control he wouldn't be suited for the job in the first place.

Did you already forget the mother earth skit? And whatever it was during the last keynote?

Didn’t forget, no. These are not especially time consuming activities that would take much away from other priorities. Cook reportedly works long hours and is likely involved in many different things during a day and week. I don't think the "Mother Nature" or Fallon shoot meant other more important things weren't still being addressed/done.

Or just a normal day in NYC when Fallon accidentally runs into cook while wearing AVP and the bystanders are totally clueless. :p I mean, totally could happen, right?

The normal day would have been Fallon wearing the AVP, getting beaten and robbed of it, and the perp getting released with no penalty. :p

I don't mind Cook, I think as a human being, he's probably a solid chap. I do think maybe some new leadership would be beneficial to the company from a product perspective though.

I have no use for Fallon or any of the other talentless people that call themselves, "late night hosts".

Whether Jobs was "in it" for the money or not, he still had some fairly extravagant purchases such as a $120+ million (around $175+ million in today's dollars) yacht he was having built. Unfortunately, he never lived to see it completed. Jobs also asked for and received a Gulfstream V airplane, for business and private use, as part of his Apple compensation package.

Steve Jobs certainly picked the right person to take the reigns at Apple. Apple’s meteoric rise to a $3T+ company validates that choice. Apple has long been lauded as one of the best managed companies in the world and I’m confident the rumored succession plan to replace Cook will keep it at the top.
Well, time for a replacement then and soon. I think it’s peak Cook and think Apple will only go downhill from here.
I give him credit in making Apple a financial healthy institution but the lack of vision and reluctance to invest in the whole range of products has taken its toll.

They’ve neglected the Mac for too long. The infinite pipeline where rarely something real interesting comes out.

They’ve lost so many segments they were once king and it has becoming a one trick pony.

Seeing the latest iPhones and what it delivers, it shows exactly what’s wrong with the company. I think iPhone sales are making a well deserved nosedive and am eagerly awaiting the numbers, especially from China.

No AI in Europe is a lame excuse because Samsung and google are delivering here. Without it, the iPhone 16 isn’t delivering any compelling difference. Photographers aren’t that thrilled either and seeing many test on YouTube also explain why.

The excitement has gone. The main focus has become making the most money.

And after seeing Jobs die in the role, would he want to stick around so long and find himself in the same position? What's the point of making all that money if you can't just quit your work and enjoy it. Tim's stake in Apple is minuscule compared to what Jobs' was.
Why do you assume Jobs and Cook would be happier if they quit? I'm sure they want to spend more time with family and friends, but they could have both quit years before it was over if they really wanted that. The most driven (and usually successful) people sacrifice their time with loved ones and their own sanity. I don't think they can even control it.

Sorry to tell you this but the Mac is dying exactly as fast as Mac users. In other words, as older customers (who are not willing to embrace mobile and spatial computing) literally die, there is little to no reason for Apple to keep investing in antiquated platforms. Any ctech company that embraces 40 year old paradigms is dead too.

Thank goodness TC is not actually aspiring to be a comedian, no doubt he does this on top of running Apple.

Like many things, it's not because we can do something that we should do it, tho.

I disagree, apple is on a good trajectory.

What lack of vision? Apple has invested in a broad range of products. Maybe not to your liking.
They’ve neglected the Mac for too long. The infinite pipeline where rarely something real interesting comes out.
Is this the crux of this opinion? You believe apple has neglected the Mac?
They’ve lost so many segments they were once king and it has becoming a one trick pony.
Which segments were they excluding computers?
Seeing the latest iPhones and what it delivers, it shows exactly what’s wrong with the company.
Don’t think you do. The iPhone 16 is a solid upgrade.

Arguing semantics. What is nosedive? What if there isn’t a nose dive as you call it?
No AI in Europe is a lame excuse because Samsung and google are delivering here.
It’s a lame excuse in your opinion. There probably is morentonthisnthan meets the eye.
Without it, the iPhone 16 isn’t delivering any compelling difference. Photographers aren’t that thrilled either and seeing many test on YouTube also explain why.
Photographers are meh. It’s what the buying public’s opinions are. If your gathering opinions from YouTube, they are there for clicks (most of them)
The excitement has gone.
No it hasn’t.
The main focus has become making the most money.
It’s been the case since Steve Jobs. That’s part of the tasks of the ceo, to make sure the company makes money.

But this one was worth it. It’s good to get to see the ceo of a company humble theirselves in public.

Oh Tim’s 30th anniversary at apple and the iphone’s 20th are both less than 3 years away, and Tim’s healthy. He’ll make it with no problem, then he can retire if he wishes to. Steve had been ill for a long time when he died.

As for ‘what’s the point of making all that money if you can’t quit and enjoy it?’ just remember we’re talking about extremely greedy people here. They can’t quit and enjoy, at least not easily, because they’re never satisfied with what they have; they always want more, and more, and more without any limit.

It's so bizarre (and telling, really) to see people rag on both Jimmy and Tim for this lighthearted and fun video. It's not that serious and it wasn't intended to be. People go on late-night TV every single night to promote things, all guests, so I see no difference here other than the promotion being for Apple and not a movie studio or a book.

It was a fun video that was supposed to be a bit awkward, campy and silly as that's literally Jimmy's 'shtick'. Whether you like it, or him, or not, this is his brand and what his viewers expect to see. I also think Tim did well and went along with the deliberate silliness of it all and was a good sport throughout. It was a late-night 'bit', nothing more, nothing less. And yes, they're scripted, they all are.

Unfortunately, we live in an age when people tend to read too much into things and insert whatever grievances they have (or think they have) into just about any person or thing (these are the same people who probably think New York is a hellscape because, well, algorithms and other modern-day unfortunate factors). It's all so negative.

Speaking of which, the Upper East Side Apple Store in Manhattan is gorgeous. If you've never been, you should stop by on your next trip to New York. The 5th Avenue 'Cube' Apple Store is cool and all, and it is indeed in the center of everything, but at the end of the day, once you've descended down that spiral staircase, you're in a basement.

So when the Mac is dying, what’s left for Apple besides the iPhone? Vision Pro?

I don’t see real investments or big attention to their mobile division too if I’m honest.

If mobile or spatial computing is the future according to you. How do you explain the “big” improvements on the iPhone 16 and the “big succes” of the Vision Pro?

Every Tim appearance feels like a performance for stakeholders first, then the average consumer, and last — nerds. On one hand, I get it, that’s his job. But the enthusiasm seems so artificial.

I forgot which appearance it was, but it was this year where the interviewer mentions Fruit Ninja on Apple Vision Pro, and Tim smiled and was like “yeah, I play it!” Yeah, sure you do, Tim.
😑 look at me. I'm so energetic and passionate

Most companies would be happy with just Watch or AirPod revenues alone. Apple has several hardware platforms but the real money is in services which will outpace everything else soon. Those services are not coming from desktops and laptops because those platforms do not sell apps or content. I'm talking about future platforms, some that have not even been announced yet.

Define too long. According to Statcounter, the macOS market/usage share in 2023 was more than twice what it was ten plus years earlier.

iPhone sales were at or near record levels the last three years. Apple sold over twice as many iPhones per year on average in the last seven years than they did in the first ten. iPhone sales could drop over 25% and probably still be higher than where they were ten years ago.

and am eagerly awaiting the numbers, especially from China.

Part of that problem is China's recent iPhone restrictions at government agencies and state-owned businesses. How do you propose Apple or Tim Cook deal with this?

No AI in Europe is a lame excuse because Samsung and google are delivering here. Without it, the iPhone 16 isn’t delivering any compelling difference.

I think this partially has to do with Google and Samsung's more cloud-based AI approach being more easily adapted to EU regulations than Apple's on-device AI approach. However, I imagine Apple with its talent and resources will be able to make "Apple Intelligence" features available in the EU soon enough while complying with EU regs. Time will tell.

The main focus has become making the most money.

Despite what may have been claimed/stated publicly in the past, Apple’s focus was likely always about making the most money even when poor management/product decisions resulted in notable losses.

You must be a real Apple insider then when you know those future platforms.

So how is Apple generating more money from services when their overall platform is dwindling? What future platforms are you talking about?

I know how Apple is making their money and found a very inspiring video 😜:

iTunes was king (windows and Mac) and then Spotify took over. Apple bought beats to compete in the streaming market.

Final Cut Pro was the default standard for many professional studios. But apples Mac Pro didn’t got an upgrade for too long and the trash can was a total failure even Apple admitted. Final Cut Pro also got a rewrite and couldn’t import the older files anymore. Most video/movie producers ran to Adobe and HP. Another area Apple failed.

Apple also had a good foothold in the classroom. Most students or schools worked with Macs, iPads. I believe google with their Chromebook’s kicked Apple out in middleschool and lack of new iMacs/mac pro kicked Apple out of high schools/universities (not all, but a lot).

Apple’s out of the server market.

Apple’s out of monitors (except studio display). Bad marketing for Apple when you have a Mac mini hidden onder your desk and only see a big Samsung or LG.

Apple is out their router business. No new airports or whatever.

The few things Apple is concentrating on are the same things year after year after year with very incremental changes. iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac.

So yes… Apple lost a lot of areas where they used to be king. And to be honest… iPhone is following the same path.
