I think he is talking about the EU (European Union ;) ) and not Europe. Because the US isn't alone on their continent either ;)

The distinction is lost on most Americans. Foreign Parts to them usually means Canada and Mexico, maybe Puerto Rico also.

I am actually truly offended by this.
First off

EU = European Union
USA = United States of America

Both is more or less alot of things under one flag.

And I am pretty sure my next phone will be a Windows phone when hearing stuff like this and my next computer will be a Mint/Windows one, as I have not been very happy with either Mavericks or iOS 7.

Here you see, the ECB illegally extending its mandate and directly buying Portuguese bonds to lower the interest rates of over 7%, which otherwise would have led to a state bankruptcy. Unfortunately it was a success and Portugal hasn't become a second a Greece. Instead it is destroying the value of the Euro for the rest of us.

The rest of Europe doesn't have a clue what Portugal is going through. Countries like Germany, France, UK are just too wealthy to imagine it.

Our political class is disgusting. TV commenters are ignorant and corrupt, and so are the Ministers. The leader of the opposition is a nutjob; the PM told us to emigrate. Not to mention the Miró thing: even Christie's is more careful than the government.

But culturally, calling someone "European" is a lot less precise than calling someone "American.".

Of course, one means "Citizen of one of the many countries in Europe (the continent)", the other means "Citizen of the USA (a specific nation in the American continent)". It's like saying that "Asian" is a lot less precise than calling someone "French"...

Tim Cook's comparison was actually meant to be between the USA and the EU. He used slightly improper terms which gave rise to the misunderstanding, but the comparision actually works pretty well if you use the correct entities.

PS: I'm from a country in Europe but not in the EU. There is a big difference.

Why so sensitive? I thought Europeans loved Android. Besides the comparison is only referencing Androids fragmented nature, it wasn't meant as an insult. But based on the reactions in this thread, that point was lost on Europeans.

Europeans don't like Android. The iPhone is just that expensive; in fact, they love it.
The thing is, an iPhone 4S costs €400 ($540) around here, and you can't get it for a much better price. An iPhone 5s costs €700 ($950), which is outrageous!

That's the price without contract. Even in the USA a 5s contract-free costs 649$, which does not include taxes (the price in Europe should).

A lot of mudslinging. But at the end of the day we need each other. I'm happy, I have a great family and I have a job. So I can type this on a keyboard wireless attached to my 27" iMac (made in China ;)).

What is sad about this interview is that Tim Cook said a lot of good things. He insulted Europe though, even if that was not his intention.

I also don't like him saying all the time that Apple is working to bring great products in new categories. Do you remember Steve saying anything about future Apple products?
Apple has changed with Tim Cook. That is not bad, but Apple should never react to what people are saying or writing. Apple should always try to do what is right..
Tim Cook felt the pressure of the press and analysts and felt that he had to say something about exciting new products in new categories...He shouldn't be so weak.

Also, some years ago he said that Apple will double down on security. Since then we had the most leaks ever and that had as a result that Apple events became boring, because everybody knew even before the event took place, what Apple is going to announce.

I expect more seriousness from Apple and especially Tim Cook.

Just love the mudslinging to a bunch of former europeans..

Europe was a name that somebody came up with for Americans who didn’t understand ...

Of course. All those countries are there to confuse poor US citizens. And CEO's of multinational companies.

Just ship all your Macs and iPads to "Europe", we will handle the distribution.

I know. But an iPhone 5s bought in, let's say, NJ, costs $695, still $255 less expensive than here.
Plus, an on-contract device still costs €450 ($600), and with a €60/mo plan. Go to more basic plans and the phone costs as much (or probably more) than an unlocked headset there.

Android is like US - many different things under one name.
Android is like Tim Cook - many different thoughts under one brain.

Careful Tim - there's all too many people who are pro-EU tyrannical fascists who despise democracy and free speech. Even making a perfectly innocuous analogy between the vast differences between Android domains and the vast differences between European countries brings out the angry Van Rompuy fanboys and Barroso wannabes.

The mess of a project (the EU) set up with the ultimate goal of creating a effective country called Europe, with its own flag and national anthem under a false pretence that it's has prevented war and created prosperity. A socialist paradise where everything is controlled from unelected beurocrats in Brussels who represent the antiphasis of democracy and great nations governments are reduced to local councils.

The economic travesty of the euro which has devastated an entire generation with long term unemployment prospects in countries such as Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France and led to extreme right wing politics gaining in popularity.

I could go on.

Your analysis is so off the mark it's laughable.

Here a 5s costs around 650$ without contract. Some European countries have ridiculously high taxes which make up the price difference, try to figure out the VAT in your country, deduct it and compare that.

I agree with Cook. Europe is one big mess. Too many nationalities, too many opinions ,too many languages and too many rulers here.

I wish Hitler would have won the ww2 and invaded my country and added it to the 3rd Reich so i would not have to live in this ******** and speak the language known only to 5m people. I would not ****ing mind to adopt as an official language german or french or english ..but no..it would be too simple.

In US people proudly say "I am an American ! From Texas". But in Europe it is different.
Nobody says " I am a European!" instead everybody say "I am a german (french,english,czech,slovak...)".

That's why we have problems with helping members of union (and yes **** you Greece and your Idiotakis , Retardakis, hairy dumb****s) because it is not europeans helping europeans...It is GREAT GERMANY helping POOR GREECE or POORER SLOVAKIA helping POOR GREECE.

It still is more expensive.
Look, it doesn't even matter. The point is simple: no one buys iPhones because of the price.

a single efficient country vs a collection of lesser ones
