It still is more expensive.
Look, it doesn't even matter. The point is simple: no one buys iPhones because of the price.

Man. I bought rmbp 15 in US. I have saved 500 EUROS. 500 ****** EUROS. Can you imagine ? i could have also bought an additional iphone for that.

What is sad about this interview is that Tim Cook said a lot of good things. He insulted Europe though, even if that was not his intention.

I also don't like him saying all the time that Apple is working to bring great products in new categories. Do you remember Steve saying anything about future Apple products?
Apple has changed with Tim Cook. That is not bad, but Apple should never react to what people are saying or writing. Apple should always try to do what is right..
Tim Cook felt the pressure of the press and analysts and felt that he had to say something about exciting new products in new categories...He shouldn't be so weak.

Also, some years ago he said that Apple will double down on security. Since then we had the most leaks ever and that had as a result that Apple events became boring, because everybody knew even before the event took place, what Apple is going to announce.

I expect more seriousness from Apple and especially Tim Cook.

I'm amazed that it's February and we haven't seen any iPhone hardware leaks yet. Maybe the new iPhone will be like the nMP and surprise us all. When did we start seeing leaks of iPhone 5 hardware?

..

Americans tend to forget that they come from Europe (probably poor knowledge of history). Their ancestors left Europe in search for better life, though what they have know isn't exactly better and most certainly far below European average. In this view, we should offer compassion and understanding to many Americans, who not only live in complete ignorance, but are also able to connect the wealth of one corporation to their personal success, not to mention national greatness.

Besides, I think Apple is under momentum of past right now and the cracks are already showing. Tim Cook may be a good manager, but his children (playboy Ive especially) went out of control since Adolf Jobs passed away. This should be something of increased interest to him.

Here a 5s costs around 650$ without contract. Some European countries have ridiculously high taxes which make up the price difference, try to figure out the VAT in your country, deduct it and compare that.
Removing the VAT yields 777 USD for the 16 GB 5s

Regarding Cook, as a famous European with US roots would have put it, not his finest hour.

that's 570E. But they are still selling it here for 777E. KTHXBYE.FOK EUROPE

Except he flat out did say that. He made an idiotic statement and that made him sound like an idiot.

Even if he meant "European Union" again he would still be an idiot. America had nothing to do with any aspect of the nomenclature or derivations of the name of Europe. Nothing. At. All.

It's the equivalent of saying "The United States of America is a name made up for people in Canada because they couldn't figure out if it was one country or a bunch of them."

No, please read what I actually said. He's talking about the tendency of Americans to talk about 'Europe' as if it were one country. He's not saying Americans invented the word.

Exactly, that is the going price for the base 5s.

700 euros which includes 23% VAT.

Most people love Apple products but difficult to compare value with, let's say, a Nexus 5.

I did only read the first 2 pages... but does it come down to comparing Apples to Oranges while the Bananas feel offended about this?

A see some people blowing this up into something it's not.

He made a statement, maybe it wasn't worded correctly, but it certainly wasn't offensive to Europeans. I am not offended, and why would I be.

I believe he was eluding to the fact that most Americans think of Europe as one thing, rather than a union made up of countless states. It just wasn't worded that way.

Some people need to calm down, seriously.

I'm not so sure I'd say us Americans are worse off than our EU counterparts. How do you figure that? Those of us who work and contribute to society are doing quite well. We own property, decent houses, cars, toys, pretty much whatever we want. What does Europe have over us? "Free" health care? Great, except it's not free. Europeans are used to handing over most of their paycheck for the good of the community. No thanks. I can take care of myself.

I don't see many people leaving Mexico trying to get into Europe. I also don't see too many Americans trying to leave here and get into Europe. It's always the other way around. I wonder why that is? Maybe because the USA is still the best place to be if you are ambitious and willing to work hard and make something of yourself. Sorry but those are the facts.

In US people proudly say "I am an American ! From Texas". But in Europe it is different.
Nobody says " I am a European!" instead everybody say "I am a german (french,english,czech,slovak...)".

Bad comparison. Completely different.

I agree as european (though i am from central part of europe). But remember. A lot and by lot i mean hilariously a lot of jobs are being sent offshore from US and that is the biggest problem for your country. It is almost the same in europe but some jobs have to stay in the maternal countries because indians don't speak french / german / italian etc.

Yes, America is a great place to be if you're smug and succrssful. Now try losing your job and health insurance. See how much you like it now.

P.S. probabky can't afford to run that car you rely on anymore. Shame there's no public transport, huh?

Bad comparison. Completely different.

It is totally accurate. You don't think about yourself as european. You don't want to be associated with romanians, bulgarians, slovak or russian people. You think abour yourself AS A BRITISH PERSON.
That's different in US.

Yes, he's going to regret saying that, if he doesn't already. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes when they speak off the cuff, but that's kind of a doozy.

Besides being a pretty bad analogy, it's an unflattering one. Comparing a union of 28 countries, which combined represent one of your biggest (if not the biggest) customer bases in the world, to your competitor in a disparaging way ("crappy") is NOT the way to win over customers or increase market share.

Depending on how the media play this, I can see this making big headlines and people getting offended (in my opinion, somewhat justifiably) by this.

Android does NOT need any help at this point and hopefully he can "walk back" the statement a little somehow to lessen the damage. Or hopefully it will go away quietly. We'll see.

Making big headlines?? I seriously doubt that.

Because the US is a COUNTRY, made up of states. Europe is not. Thats what I was referring to.

And i was referring to that Europe does not want to be A COUNTRY and THAT IS why it always will be A CRAP...PLAYGROUND FULL OF KIDS FIGHTING ABOUT THEIR COLORFUL CASTLES.

About that Russia part are u kidding me ?

The United States and the EU are not far apart.

Despite the comparison about the US being one country, and the EU a ragtag collection of countries: each state has it's own government, lawmakers, taxation system, driving license, regulatory bodies - it's mindless duplication. Republicans bang on about federal wastage, but it's sheer idiocy in this day and age to have 50 separate bureaucracies.

The US is Android, and Europe is Android. North Korea is Apple.

EU has an additional level of legislation and government.

The discussion here is ignoring the EU provincial level.

Anything that gives people an opportunity to rip on Tim Cook seems en vogue on Apple sites these days. There's obviously a reason Mac Rumors chose to highlight this portion of Cook's interview. And put it up late Friday where it most likely will be the first thing people see here all weekend. By Monday morning this thread will probably have 500+ comments.

Russia is NOT a European state.

Russia is NOT a European state.

Yes and NO. Russia is not in EU but Western Russia including its capital city Moscow is in Europe. post Soviet Eastern and Central countries are still under some russian influence.

I didn't know I needed 1000 apps optimized for my tablet let alone 500,000. The 70 or so I have installed already seems like way more than I actually use.
