'Android is Like Europe'
Maybe he ment to say:

Europe likes Android

Look at the EU5 v US smartphone sales number.
In most of Europe the iPhones is a distant second to Android, being chalenged for second place by WindowsPhone.

But his point is that lumping everything running anything called "Android" is not the right comparison. How does Apple compare to Samsung in each of those countries? How does it compare to Amazon? Maybe in some countries it is doing better or worse relative to Samsung, and in others it is doing better or worse relative to Amazon.

It's not so much his actual words but their implications.

He didn't imply anything of the sort. These comments are just an indication of how many people are looking for a fight and something to be butt hurt about. You'd think you were all right wingers, lol.

Tim Cook:

Android = ****!

"Europe is like Android"

Therefore, it is logical to conclude that

Europe = ****!

------------

*He of course never actually said this but this explains why some here are offended.*

It must only be logical to those obsessed with Apple.

As European, I find this wording a bit insulting. I think I know what he was trying to say, but its not how it will be perceived by the majority of people.

P.S. As if all states in the USA are the same :D

"Europe was a name that somebody came up with for Americans who didn’t understand that Europe was a lot of countries that weren’t like U.S. states. They were very different."

I didn't know US education was that bad... ;)

And we seem to be copying it in England now...

Personally I don't think this is a big deal. Sure, he could have chosen his words better, but I highly doubt he was intentionally trying to piss off an entire continent.
No, he was just playing to an audience, who already thinks Europe is a mess.

Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Sweden have more in common than Oklahoma, Maryland, Georgia, Oregon, New Hampshire in terms of cultural mindset and ideology.
Are you kidding me? Germany alone is more diverse than the whole of North America. I can't even count the opposing mindsets in my own hometown.

No. But every US state they speak English. They all use the US dollar. They all are subject to US Federal Law, And they all have the same stores, restaurants, and TV stations.

Can you say the same thing about Germany and Britain? Finland and Spain? Ireland and Norway? Switzerland and Turkey?

The EU is great in theory. But the reality is that it (Europe) is a collection of wildly divergent peoples, cultures, political systems, and economies. In a way that the USA fundamentally isn't.

Thats the point Mr Cook was trying to make. Sorry so many people are too sensitive to understand that.

This would never have happened if Steve was still alive. ;)

----------

If only Android had had good taste, the Europe/US analogy might have had some merit.

am i the only one who thinks that tim just wasn't offensive with his comment? i like living in europe and i am happy to use android where i can install a keyboard not from the stone age.
i know, freedom is not for everyone though.

...Many Different Things Under One Name.

Sounds a lot like E pluribus unum to me. Oh well if Cook doesn't like that concept maybe he should watch a sugar water Super Bowl commercial and chill.

And it is great that it is not all the same. So I guess Android is awesome.

My point is that while Tim Cook is making stupid comments about Android and Europe, Android is very successful in Europe. It is also a play on words.

I do see were Cook is coming from with his comment about Andoid. iOS is more one consistent 'thing' than Android is. Apple and Google have chosen different models for their mobile OSs. Overall I think that each company has made a good decision for the kind of company they are. Cook, and Jobs before him, do seem a little defensive about Android's success as they know that the more "open" Android business model is something that would not have worked for Apple and iOS.

In terms of 'lumping everything running anything called "Android"' into one number I think that it is fair and valid to include all Android phones that run the Play Store together, as a developer can write an app that can run on all. Note I do not include Amazon here. The Kindle is part of the 'success of Android' but should be accounted for separately.

He wasn't making a point about Europe being like Android, but about Android being like Europe. You are supposed to know how Europe is, to understand how Android is. For Americans, who are spoiled with a perfect working democracy under a bipartisan leadership of results-oriented politicians, the multitude of political parties, parliaments and elections in Europe must look like a mess. In Europe everything is a compromise and nothing is a decision. Like a bunch of cowboys meeting at high-noon on the middle of the street to discuss the issue.

And it is great that it is not all the same. So I guess Android is awesome.

Analogies have their limitations.

But to follow up on Cook's observation: What it the better market for a TV show or magazine? The USA, where (90% of) the ~ 300 million population all speak the same language. Or Europe, where the same population speaks two dozen different ones?

Thats the point he was making. "Android" is split between half a dozen extant releases, plus who knows how many different commercial forks? Whereas, as we speak, more than 85% of iOS devices are currently using the latest release.

So what does that make Apple, a dictatorship?

Seriously how do you attain such twisted sense of logic? Cook is referring to a word being used to refer to a group of countries as opposed to a single country to describe the fragmentation of the Android ecosystem and you twist that to equate Apple with dictatorship? In almost any other forum that'd be counted as outright trolling.

...he shouldn't piss of european customers, that spend top € for apple stuff, by making those kind of comparisons.

That is Nokia nostalgia. The illusion is now over, with WP sales dropping.

Now it's time for BB10 to start getting traction with 10.2.1
I agree that Nokia nostalgia could be part of WP's growth, but I haven't seen any data to show that WP sales are dropping. The Kantar number that I posted suggest that WP sales are still growing. Do you have any data?
