Android is all the English speaking countries that honor each other's currencies. Speak one language and it will work, got money from another country, that's fine too - the accent might be different, the people might be wearing different clothing, the weather might be different, the local customs/laws may be somewhat different but as long as you speak English and are tolerant - things work great. There's a ton of diversity, lot of different ideas, and for a good measure if you don't like something you can easily immigrate to anywhere you like and take your language, your money and you are golden.

Apple is it's own island - big, beautiful for some, but there's one weird language, little diversity, your ideas can be cut off at the dictator's will and where they do everything to make you stay! Welcome to City 17. You've chosen or been chosen.. yada yada. :D

You really think the average European gives a toss what the CEO of Apple says in an interview? Shoot, they probably don't even know who Tim Cook is.

You'd 'think differently' if you saw some of the comments about this on European news websites, by Europeans.

Everybody was hoping he would show a little innovation in his rhetoric and stop saying things like "working on great new product", "proud & honored", "only apple could do this", "North Star", and get some new words and phrases.

And we get this?

I was just in the Stiftungsbibliothek in St. Gallen Switzerland. There they had a giant globe made in iirc 16th C., it had a place called "Evrope" already on it...

Maybe he was just jet lagged after all the recent globe hopping, Ireland, Middle East, Turkey, etc.

Many Different Things Under One Name

And that's what I do not like about Apple of these days. (That, of course, after the poorer and poorer quality.)

They went from "Think Different" company to something that is against anything "different".

Before they were accommodating to the niche users - now they are at best ignorant of anyone trying to do something differently.

Would like more of this. Strict, serious bosses are one thing. Eccentric nutters are another. We need more nutters.

Have you lived in the US? I have, for over a decade, and each state is totally different. Republicans are so far right, they are beyond anything present in Germany. I'm from Austria by the way.
Than you know about Hitler. How is that for being so far right? Those Republicans are extreme, but they are not very diverse in their extremism. Have you spoken to one of them, you don't need to talk to the others. They are all so equally insane.
In terms of ideology, Germany and other social democracies share some common political and social values (for the most part).
We share nothing, our government isn't even representing large parts of the population. We need so many political parties, because we have so diverse opinions, even on the same side of the political spectrum. And inside of all of our parties, we have multiple political wings with vastly opposing world views. That we speak the same language doesn't help us, because our values are so diverse that words have different meanings. There are no common political and social values within Germany, so we have nothing to share with other countries. By the way, who is so stupid to believe in democracy, let alone social?
In the US, you have a sizable junk of the population who wants to essentially to keep government only for defense.
Which is a shared opinion by people all over the country. Extreme individualism differs Americans from Europeans, but not from other Americans.

No. But every US state they speak English. They all use the US dollar. They all are subject to US Federal Law, And they all have the same stores, restaurants, and TV stations.

Can you say the same thing about Germany and Britain? Finland and Spain? Ireland and Norway? Switzerland and Turkey?

Or people are actually smart enough to know that "Europe" is the term associated with those countries and has been around since ancient times. It's called a continent.

So your analogy is completely broken.

Unless I missed the period of history in which the United States of America and Canada started using the same currency, speaking the same singular language, obeying the same laws and watching the same television. After all they are the countries the make up the continent of North America.

Cook's statement makes him look like another stereotypical American idiot who thinks the world revolves around America and has no clue about the geography of the world. Not the impression a CEO should give.

I am European and this is true.

No reason to don't deny it. The EU is a political instrument, I'm Portuguese, and I don't feel any attachment from France, or Germany, or Sweden.

In fact, my country, and many others were suffering economic difficulties and nobody in the EU lend us a hand by any means. They even have laughed at us behind our backs, and called us LAZY!

Also, in 74, we showed that we are not dumb, and we could change. We changed our dictatorial government with zero external influence (even without online social networks)

But now, we really want to change the government, because it is corrupt, but we don't, because being in the EU makes a lot of political friction, because we have "to explain to the boss". And that's why our government sucks, they have their backs well guarded by their fellows at the EU parliament, that share the same political party.

The euro currency is another ****. They changed to it and didn't asked the people if we wanted it or not, yet they made stupid "referendos" like if abortion were to be legalized (not considered a crime) or not...

I don't think he was saying Android/Europe is crappy, so much as it's not truly one cohesive platform. Rather a bunch of autonomous platforms that are loosely tied together under one umbrella of services.

Or in Europe's case, a bunch of self autonomous countries that are tied together under a common set of laws and trade agreements.

Though the quote itself isn't exactly the swooftest thing I've ever heard ole Cook say.

Exactly.

The haters willow course twist the night away. Europeans will get his point. At least he did not say "**ck the EU" as our State Dept Official did this week. :apple:

He is much too polite: 'Android is Like America', Totally ****ed Up

It's similar. Europe has good, productive parts like Germany. US has good productive parts like California.

US has useless, freeloading parts like Alabama. Europe has useless freeloading parts like Greece.

He could have compared either way.

'Android is Like Europe'
Maybe he ment to say:

Europe likes Android

Look at the EU5 v US smartphone sales number.
In most of Europe the iPhones is a distant second to Android, being chalenged for second place by WindowsPhone.

Meaningless...

In my country, the iPhone costs more than the minimum wage.

People who buy androids, just can't afford the iPhone.

Those androids are cheap 100€-200€ handsets, not those who probably think of (galaxy s4 and the likes)

Sounds like a comment made by a dolt.

And I like Tim, a lot and still believe he's the one to lead Apple, yet obviously he's haunted by Android, Apple launched law suits, and other chaotic activities Apple has been been bogged down with.

The promise of big things to come is weighing heavily on Apple. Google's busy producing results while Apple is leaking hot air. I would enjoy seeing some results in the iPhone line soon.

Not everyone has Tim Cooks patience :)

Here in the USA, iPhone and top line Android phones sell for the same exact price with a 2 yr contact. Therefore price is not an issue.

As a proud European and avid Apple user this is one of the most idiotic things I've heard this year.

Why so sensitive? I thought Europeans loved Android. Besides the comparison is only referencing Androids fragmented nature, it wasn't meant as an insult. But based on the reactions in this thread, that point was lost on Europeans.

"A teacher has a class full of rednecks. She asks someone to use the word 'Timbuktu' in a story.
A scrawny kid in the back raises his hand and recites proudly:
Tim and me, a hikin' we went,
Till we found three wh**es in a pitch-up tent.
They were three and we were two;
So I buck one and Tim buck two!"

Apparently Mr. Cook respects only the "30 years" of Apple's history! Forget about where his grandparents came from! He talked about inconsequential things!

The United States and the EU are not far apart.

Despite the comparison about the US being one country, and the EU a ragtag collection of countries: each state has it's own government, lawmakers, taxation system, driving license, regulatory bodies - it's mindless duplication. Republicans bang on about federal wastage, but it's sheer idiocy in this day and age to have 50 separate bureaucracies.

The US is Android, and Europe is Android. North Korea is Apple.

I'm Portuguese, and I don't feel any attachment from France, or Germany, or Sweden. In fact, my country, and many others were suffering economic difficulties and nobody in the EU lend us a hand by any means.
Here you see, the ECB illegally extending its mandate and directly buying Portuguese bonds to lower the interest rates of over 7%, which otherwise would have led to a state bankruptcy. Unfortunately it was a success and Portugal hasn't become a second a Greece. Instead it is destroying the value of the Euro for the rest of us.
They even have laughed at us behind our backs, and called us LAZY!
Americans call each other lazy all the time, depending on whether their state is unionized or has so-called right-to-work laws. You would be amazed about the hate between Americans working in the same industry under different labour laws. Nationalism is nothing against Regionalism.
