I've heard too many stories every week just browsing reddit or the Mac forums here. It's really hard for Apple to make sure a third party doesn't do a bad job or mishandle your device. But if you use Apple to repair a device then there is a much stronger chance they will do a top job.

90% of customers won't be able to handle batteries and they should not. This is a very toxic part and one break in the material releases a very toxic deadly gas when the battery reacts with air.
That’s fine. I trust myself more than Apple.

Why say that and have an Apple device/services?

Of course he does because it's completely self-serving and filled with onerous terms and conditions that no repairman would want to take on.

As usual Louis Rossmann has a great take on it:

Well duh, people only post about repairs when things go wrong and they want to vent or find help. “My phone got fixed, it was totally fine” isn’t exactly a compelling thread.

The point here is that those who are able to do repairs themselves can now do it without ordering sketchy parts or having to follow third party guides, and those without easy access to an Apple Store or AASP will be able to have access to more reliable repair options.

Obviously there is still a large percentage of users who will continue to service through Apple, this just opens up options.

"They're the Popular Mechanics crowd if you will, which I love and have been focused on my entire life."

What?! I am a huge Apple product user, and this statement is so ridiculous its insane. Which hardware company is more opposite than the do it yourself get into the guts than Apple?

Love how Tim tries pitching it as if this was a great idea they came up with for the benefit of the consumer, they are only doing it because of the right to repair bill. Pretty much took tying their hands behind their back with a gun against their head in order to provide parts that should have been available for years.

What makes an apple tech special other than having access to the parts?
I was gonna say the Blue T-Shirt, but yeah, access to parts would have been my second guess.

Anyhow, anyone with the skill and knowledge should be allowed to do their own repairs. Hail, a lot of people work on their own cars even though they ain't mechanics by trade. I've done plenty of repairs on my cars and trucks. If it's something major, then I'll take it to a mechanic. But changing fluids, shocks and general maintenance, I DIY. Some things are simple on paper but is a pain in the ass to deal with ie. serpentine belt. I ain't gonna waste hours and hours when I can pay a mechanic who can do it in 15-30 minutes.

Didn’t you throw yours in the garbage. And cause a fire. Maybe you should learn how to handle lithium batteries. They are ways to safely handle them and dispose of them

People should just get their device repaired by Apple.

Too many horror stories about third parties who damage the device and then say 'No you gave it to me with a big scratch across it.'
I remember back in the days of the Apple II that someone I knew took his IIe to the Apple authorized service dealer in our town for an upgrade and when he got it back it was missing parts.

I don’t know, I think many people here think when they take their device in for a new battery or repair that Apple has an EE PhD candidate from MIT or a magic elf on loan from Santa working on it.
I got an ElF at home. My son learned by trial end error iphone repair. Of course the hardest part is getting A+ parts.

“the popular mechanics crowd”

- suddenly formed after The Right to Repair bill
Exactly. Cook makes me want to vomit every time he opens his sleazy mouth and his slimy lying words slide out as if he believes he's actually a good human. "...the Popular Mechanics crowd if you will, which I love and have been focused on my entire life..." OMG, how do you even say this stuff with a straight face?

Tim Cook so polished and such a pro - from the moment he leaves the door of the Apple store his focus is just on the interviewer, not even a glance or acknowledgment to the person giving him information. Total focus and engagement with the task at hand separated clearly from the task before and no doubt the one that would follow.

they need to add one more thing… an advanced layer to this program, maybe called “Pro Self-Service Repair”: Component-level parts store for the component level repair technician. He knows we’re here, he’s been focused on us his whole life!

Hmm not so sure about Tim in the first few seconds shaking hands and no masks either. Many still wouldn't shake hands yet. Tim living on the edge.

I hope they open this up to laptops and ipads. Not like we don’t use ifixit for batteries already, but maybe better manufactured and tested batteries would be nice. Had to replace one of the ifixit ipad batteries twice as it swelled. Ifixit warranteed the battery and sent us another for free. The other ifixit ipad battery is having issues holding charge. Neither last 10 hours like the original batteries did.
My feeling is that they will eventually, the way the new batteries are placed in the latest MacBooks certainly gives me hope.
I really (probably in vain) hope that they’ll take a page out of Sony’s book with the expandable storage option on the PS5. Imagine being able to bung an extra SSD in a MacBook…

Apple is prepping self service for their future car business. Believe me, they won’t have garages or expand the stores to fit your Apple Car inside the Genius Bar. No, they will be self serviceable for most parts. With Mac and iPhone self repair, this lays out the logistics for getting full self service ready so when the Apple Car is released they will have staff and customer already trained and used to the process.

I had thrown a bluetooth keyboard in the garbage. The keyboard bent in the garbage and the battery leaked and reacted with oxygen in the air. Deadly smoke was everywhere. I didn't know at the time this could happen. That's why I now do not throw anything with a battery in the garbage.

The most surprising thing about this story is that the parts store will be run by a third party.

This is a win-win for Tim Apple. the get to virtue-signal by having the program and putting it out there, but then collect the money when people ruin their stuff trying to figure out how to fix it.

I sometimes think when I hear things that are so staged, scripted and obviously “not true” and think “how can anyone really believe this statement?” I think, “Why even say that?” No need. But if it is true, it does not reflect you business ethics Tim as it is proven to be false since you became CEO.

But this is Apple…and people believe…

Continue to spoon feed us Tim and take our money.. ;)
