All these comments of, "I don't need/want/care about AR in my life" are the same kind of comments I saw when the iPad was coming out. "I don't want that, it's just a big iPhone." And here we are. So, maybe get past yourselves a bit and slide into the future..
100% it’s the same thing all over again lol. It’s funny to see how negative people are being against this honestly 😂

I may joke about it but some of those old timers were a lot tougher than me. Most of the ones I’m talking about are dead now but they did some things I wouldn’t survive.
Y'all mean the old timers who survived. A lot of them didn't, do various diseases😬, purges and war😑. The toughest folks today are stronger than the toughest folks of back then. We don't measure up because were comparing the top 95% (Us) of one group with the top 50% (old timers who didn't die) of another.

I'd be a casualty of survival of the fittest if not for advances in technology. Without glasses🤓, I'd be wondering why everyone is running the wrong way during a hunt before being trampled by a stampede of bisons.😰
Glasses aren’t hit fashion accessories like cell phones were. Sometimes they’re more trendy than other times but they often interfere with fashion, so I think Apple Glasses will have a rough time in that arena
Glasses are be fashion accessories. Goggles, not so much. Until they can shrink the tech an unobtrusive package and produce AR glasses (like the Den-noh megane from Dennoh Coil) that can pass for regular specticles, it ain't gonna be mainstream.

Until then, I might be interested in AR glasses that fits over one eye like a DBZ scouter.

I'd rig one up to emit a powder plume when every I shout, "His power level is over 10,000? Impossible!"😁

Spot on! That always seems to happen here. Ditto with iPod and iPhone.

It's always a race to the bottom with people letting everyone else know how bad a new Apple tech device will flop. It's like people intentionally leave their imaginations at the door. Scleroticism at its finest.

Highly doubt it…I’m wishing we could go back to not being connected 24/7 and go back to dumb phones.
Preach. While I love tech and the benefits of it, the overload is slowly killing our society. From Social Media to our undivided attention to tech, is affecting us all in a very negative way.

"Not Too Long From Now, You'll Wonder How You Led Your Life Without AR". He said the same thing about the Apple Watch... and I here I am, 7 years later, no Apple Watch... not wondering. ;)

Same
I've even tried the Watch a couple times (bought/return or sold) and I simply don't want it

I'm not wondering about it either -- I've flat out confirmed my lack of interest!

I personally agree with him about the Apple Watch because it’s a very important device. It has saved countless lives and identified illnesses so people were able to seek medical treatment.

I also agree with you. You should have a choice as to what technology you want and need. Some people have never driven a car. Some people have never been on the Internet. Some people don’t even have electricity in their houses.

Lots of people here don't get that even the next, ultra high priced AR/VR device that Apple will release will be something like the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, the first released cellular phone.

Or maybe it will be like the HomePod, the Apple Newton, the touchbar, and so on.

If they get it as right as the airpods you can be satisfied, let alone reinvent the mobile phone.

The future moves forward not backwards sir. People who aren’t visionaries only see what was, not what is or will be. AR/VR is the future, don’t be the oddball out fighting against innovation.

VR was the future in 1990, Michael Douglas was all over it, haven’t you seen Disclosure?

Also flying cars

Then somebody realized that planes and helicopters are flying cars

About AR/VR, the jury is still out, but it’s possible that people realize it’s only a poor substitute for the smartphone or a traditional display. Nothing beats reality in terms of realism

Good ol’ Tim sure is getting up there. Cheers to the guy for steering one of the most profitable companies on earth in the right direction, though. I can’t handle laundry day and this guy runs Apple.

Why is it one or the other? Do you not own a smartphone and interface with the digital realm via that device?

Why is AR suddenly replacing real life with permanent augmentation? You can just augment reality when needed - use it like a tool.

Why go back to horses and carriages when we have cars?
Because horses or cars had no impact on social interaction. People still talked to each other. AR furthers people's cognitive and physical decline.

VR is a simulation of 4D worlds where you don’t move, over a 4D world where you move

They’re limited resolution and computing power renders of an unlimited world

Why would one use that?

I get that it may be somewhat attractive for porn and industrial applications, but day to day, meh.

And AR, when you have all the information in the world in your pocket? For mainstream users, meh.

Big tech cos have to look for the next big thing to justify their valuations and assure their stockholders, and I’m thinking they just have no idea what to show us and therefore are overcooking a futuristic idea from 30 years ago, hoping it sticks.

The more I see what Meta and the competition are doing the more I think they’re desperate and shooting in the dark

What is wrong about living in NYC?

I live half the year in NYC and the other half in the European countryside.

The bad thing about NY is not being able to afford it, if you ask me.
If you have enough money there is nothing wrong with it. Most of us don't.

I don't have to step over homeless people to buy groceries. I don't have to worry about getting mugged if I dress up. And of course if you have never lived free and crime free, then you may not even know what you are missing.

We have neighbors that still don't lock their doors. Try that in any major city.

My neighbors in fidi don’t lock their doors, although there is a doorman and front desk.

Homelessness is a sad development but I would say it’s virtually omnipresent in the US, bar small villages.

I was in DC recently and the amount of tents was staggering

Meh.

At this point I'm just looking forward to the day when my $1600+tax Apple display has reliably functioning audio out of the box.

What did Apple say after you contacted them for warranty service?

Mine has been working great since I got it. Superb image quality and outstanding sound for a display - a nice bonus.

I think it will be more of a desktop/laptop replacement than a phone replacement.

Amazing how all the people worrying about social interaction have thousands of posts on MacRumors.
Anyway, I'm more interested in VR, to enhance the experiences I have with people who aren't physically with me, rather than AR which may distract when I am physically with others.
I get much more physical exercise when I'm playing a VR game than when I'm sitting on a couch playing a standard console game.

You’re missing my point: What problems is AR going to solve for enough people that will make it the next iPhone?

The iPhone was a massive success because it solved some problems a huge number of people had: carrying around a camera, phone, MP3 player, etc. Combining all those into one device was a killer feature and tons of people had those devices so it was a killer feature for tons of people

It also became a fashion accessory in the same way that many cell phones had already been fashion accessories for years

Glasses aren’t hit fashion accessories like cell phones were. Sometimes they’re more trendy than other times but they often interfere with fashion, so I think Apple Glasses will have a rough time in that arena

And what is the big problem that AR solves for a lot of people? That’s the question I’m asking. I’m not asking what it can do.
Well said!

I had cell phones before there were even flip phones. (first one was a bag phone). I saw what it could do for me and I liked it.

I bought the early smart phones, Windows, Android, iPhone. I saw what they could do for me and I liked it

I bought one of the first pre-assembled computers, a Radio Shack Model 1 level 1 with 3K of RAM for a lot of money at the time. I saw the uses!

I bought the first Apple Watch and loved it. (This is actually the portable device I use most)

I've had many, many, different computers, smart cell phones, smart watches. I saw what I could do and did them.

For VR and AR, not so much. I only get in these threads to see if someone actually comes up with a compelling use that helps *me*.

Edit: I forgot to mention digital assistants -- that's another area I've bought many devices and love them. I use an Echo Show all the time.

The Apple Newton would be in the same category as the Motorola in the analogy, a precursor to the smartphone.
And while the HomePod may not have been a major hit, the smart speaker category is a fairly popular category of device.
The touchbar is just one small aspect of a device.
