Will be very entertaining coming back to this thread a decade from now and seeing everyone shoot it down when it’s going to be probably the biggest deal of our lifetimes. Literally every sci-fi movie we watch has some kind of futuristic augmented reality or holograms in it, and we all eat that stuff up.

But when it comes to actually having it in our own lives? We shoot it down as if it’s gonna be totally useless. Yeah, this is going to be an interesting decade.

You know Tim, I was easily sold on the Apple Watch, still like it to this day. But AR/VR? You’re going to have really come up with something unique to get me to buy it. And even then, if it’s over $1k, no buy at all.

This is a super exaggeration that reduces his credibility. It makes me doubt if he understand either life or technology.

People can still live without even a smartphone. And some people, even if they need a computer, can more than get by with a Chromebook. In other categories, some people don't even own a microwave, or an air conditioner, or a TV.

And these things make a bigger difference than AR since they take people from zero tech to mainstream tech. If even these things are not totally necessary to many people's life, AR would make even less of a difference.
People cannot live without a smartphone anymore , that ship has sailed , if you are talking about can they can actually be alive without a phone , which is of course not what he meant , then yes , ppl can be alive without a phone , but you can go down the tube , take a bus , train , sit in the airport walk in the park , EVERYONE has a phone in their hands or pockets.
AR would make less of a difference when it would be first introduced (which Tim also states , it wont be an immediate impact) , but his view that years from now , it would be dominating the world , you can disagree , sure , but your examples didnt convince me why AR wont be mainstream 10 years from now.

We're building a whozit. Don't you really want a whozit? You're really going to need a whozit! Our whozit will be the best whozit, don't you know. Magical, even. You'll wonder how you could have possibly lived before you bought one of our whozits. You're nothing without a whozit. Buy. Buy. BUY.

People cannot live without a smartphone anymore

Sure they can. You may choose not to, and there's nothing wrong with that. Certain practical realities would be more difficult without a smartphone. But don't confuse consumer whozits with needs. You don't need Nikes, you need shoes. You don't need an iPhone, you need to be able to communicate. Apple sells a lifestyle. You don't need a lifestyle. You can like the lifestyle, you can enjoy their lifestyle (I do!), but you don't need their lifestyle.

So many people here are being extremely dismissive. I would LOVE to come back here in fifteen years and see what y’all think. This is going to be wild. It’s already slowly happening. Look at AirPods Pro 2. They have long battery, and can limit loud noises while in Transparency Mode. That’s AR. Visual AR is going to be much more profound to society and y’all just trippin’. :(

Oh, I’ll continue to live my life without AR/VR. As good as Apple is with marketing, this is one thing they will never sell me on.

I already live in a World I can’t believe is real. Don’t need tech making my reality more confusing.

but you can go down the tube , take a bus , train , sit in the airport walk in the park , EVERYONE has a phone in their hands or pockets.
And very few of those people MUST have a smartphone. And many people in the world still don't have smartphones. And some people don't even want one and have given up on owning one after owning one. Also, some people have a basic phone (or no phone at all), and just have a chromebook instead. They are still able to do things that they need technology to do.

By the way, everybody I see on the highway is either driving a car or riding a car. I guess everyone needs a car to live? Now that you mention it...everyone I see in the sky is either riding a plane or piloting one too.

I guess you are right. Everyone needs a smartphone. And I better go buy a plane this afternoon.

LOL what a freak!

NOOOoo... Tim , i prefer to sit in the garden, grill and drink wine, and have a nice "REAL" talk with family and friends.

Anyway, by looking at his photo, Tim should also try to take sun bath.
Sun, Vitamin D, etc. is not so bad as it sounds like.

Cheers

I have an account at a bank that no one in my life knows about that add a little amount of money to occasionally just have the money available when this product become available. It's my little secret!!

Just not sold on AR/META, etc.

When I got the internet in 1994, I immediately saw the value. Everyone did. This? not so much. Could be another 3D TV, flying cars prediction, guess we will have to wait and see

Some wildly awful takes here.

We as a race are constantly technologically growing, it's in our nature. The speeding up of that growth is thanks to capitalism. It shouldn't be growing THIS fast but it is due to the artificially forcing of it. I'm excited & it'll inevitably be a new form factor soon, phones aren't being bought like that anymore.

Until it reaches the tech level of Dennoh Coil*, it ain't gonna be main stream. It ain't gonna be mainstream in my lifetime. If I want to see stuff that ain't there, I'd hit that bottle of homemade hooch again. 120 proof is the good stuff.🥴🥴 Last time I saw pink elephants in tutu's.

*In the series, AR glasses--which looks like standard spectacles--replaces phones, laptops and PDA.

People cannot live without a smartphone anymore , that ship has sailed ....
You quite sure about that? Last time I looked, I was a people, and though I have an iPhone (a fully functional 4s would you believe), it provides nothing of value in my daily life. I use it most as a cooking timer, and to remind me to put the bins out. Occasional text to my wife when I'm out. But if I didn't have one, nothing would change. And I seem to be doing alright, thanks for asking.
That ship might've sailed, but I wasn't on it! And yet the Sun still comes up in the morning!
