Will be very entertaining coming back to this thread a decade from now and seeing everyone shoot it down when it’s going to be probably the biggest deal of our lifetimes. Literally every sci-fi movie we watch has some kind of futuristic augmented reality or holograms in it, and we all eat that stuff up.

But when it comes to actually having it in our own lives? We shoot it down as if it’s gonna be totally useless. Yeah, this is going to be an interesting decade.

Well said. Just like the iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

Jeeez, who asked for a thousand songs in their pocket?... Who asked for a non-mechanical mobile phone keypad?... An Apple tablet? It's just a big iPhone, and it's late to the party, because HP already has one!

I love how a lot of people here intentionally cling to the $3,000 price estimate someone came up with. And use that as a cudgel to slag on Apple and its entry into the technology.

I predict it will be a lot less than that.
It's actually comical. I question whether people here actually use Apple products, know their product history, or even understand simple economics. As an introductory device it's understandable, but for these things to be adopted by the masses in 10-20 years: there will be a lower end tier as the tech matures ala iPhone/iPhone Pro.

AR Glasses will be an alternative to your TV, projector, PC monitor, phone, measuring stick, etc. Just as how our phones became our flashlight, cameras, telephones, wallets, keys, etc. And most of these things still exist as standalones for you to use. People here are not getting the picture: assist healthcare professionals and businesses, seamless navigation without looking down at your phone, translate languages in real time, foster a new media of entertainment, upon countless of possibilities and new app ecosystem through the power of AR and AI. Apple's really about their software bag. People are showing their age and giving 'old man yells at cloud'.. I will come back in 20 years just to laugh.

It's refreshing to see someone here who can see beyond their nose and gets the potential.

I have evolved over time to think we need less screens in our lives, not more. Obviously People should choose for themselves, but we are missing out with what is around us and appreciating the natural beauty of life. I feel like we’ve become too plugged in.

I could not agree more

A few times over the last couple years I have had occasion to step away from my devices …doing woodworking projects and helping some family members move …it was usually a week or two of very minimal screen usages, just to cover the bare necessities…. it was amazing how much happier I was with less technology in my face all the time

It felt like a massive brain vacation

I think that we've had a great conversation here today, but if we could augment that with something from the virtual world, it would have arguably been even better.

Exactly what from the virtual world? Not sure. How would it have been better? I’ll get back to you on that.

I will live just fine...just like I live without Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp, SnapChat and all the other Internet trash out there.

Some people will for s*its and giggles. But how that contributes to the revolution is mice-nuts.

AR is a tool to help people and businesses solve problems. It's not for fun and games (though it can be).
I was more kidding than anything, it will be interesting to see what happens. Microsoft has not been terribly successful getting into the business market with Hololens but Microsoft is not Apple.

Sadly he's right.

But just as it's true that virtually everyone on earth uses social networks, this does not mean that it's good for the human race.

Highly doubt it…I’m wishing we could go back to not being connected 24/7 and go back to dumb phones.
It is interesting where at times I wish I can live forever because I want to see the iPhone 97000 in the far distant future but now I am middle-aged I would like to go back to my blue monochrome Nokia 5160 from 1999 and play snake as my distraction as I sat on the bowl.

How are you going to watch TV with your family? You’d all have to have AR glasses to do that

I dunno. It definitely won’t be for everyone at first. And frankly, I don’t think it will be good for anyone to have yet another device required in our lives. I think it’ll be good to move away from that

Then.. buy a tv? 💀

So AR is going to replace your TV except you have to have a TV also?

That’s like if the iPhone had some huge flaw that required you to still carry around an iPod
Just because it has the ability to doesn't mean you're forced to give up your tv. God forbid extra functionality.

If my glasses record everything I see, I wonder if other people love the idea of getting recorded. How will they learn? Will there be a blinking tally light on your glasses like on many other cameras? Would you have a private or delicate conversation if the other person wears those glasses?

Also from the other perspective it is creepy: Do you want the computer to know what exactly you are looking at all the time?

I remember my maths professor forgetting to turn off his wireless microphone while he was at the toilet and all those noises could be heard via the speakers in the lecture hall. Will people often forget to turn off those glasses?

Who said that?
No one. The "alternative" and the option to use standalone things part was completely glossed over. Apparently, TVs will no longer be produced just because AR glasses can be used for entertainment... like an iPad and they can't all coexist. Also, I'd imagine SharePlay for AR Glasses to at least be a thing. You know features that we already have... these are like very easy solutions, and it wasn't hard to come up with them.

I have absolutely no interest in VR, I prefer the real world wherever possible

When they can make Star Trek style holidecks where you can have ultra-realistic sex with holographic women, let me know. Until then? Meh....

And anyone who thinks porn isn't going to be the number one popular use of any kind of realistic VR technology is kidding themselves.
