People pay $110+ for a GT-R and it’s not luxury either. Samsung sells the note 9 for 1000+, courage to them for trying.

Whatever your view of Apple, to me they make premium consumer devices.
I agree on premium, which is completely fine, but they are on a new level these days compared to at least 5 years ago...

Tim didn't make Apple a luxury brand. That was Steve Jobs in 1984, selling the original 128k Mac for $2500.
Well I think you’ve got a point here, but then you should also mention the Apple Lisa for $9,995 :)

Timmy just made me strongly contemplate going Android. Now to just research the best stock android, largest oled screen, with best battery life. The eXceSs Max is bs with its sub 3000 mah battery. That's just pathetic. I bought a $180 android for screwing around with that has a 4000 mah battery. Apple is stagnant.

So much whining in here. I hate the pricing too, but I love the phones and know they're a business, not a charity. At those prices, they're going to sell an enormous amount of phones.

They're also selling luxury items that no one needs to survive. Just don't buy the products if you are that pissed off at the prices. Getting all butthurt about the pricing of a luxury item is ludicrous. The interview was a bit disingenuous, but what did you honestly want him to say? We're a corporation and we priced these products to net us the greatest gross margin?

The XR is actually a pretty smart deal as the de jure replacement for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus pair and as an alternative for those that were put off by the 2017 iPhone X's premium pricing but still would like to own one. The pricing of the XR splits the difference of the pair of 8s (before they were moved down the ranks), plus, a larger display than all 3 2017 iPhones. It also has the good bits from the new XS flagships, excepting the OLED display, 3D touch (which is a biggie for me), whilst, its single rear camera is nearly as good. No doubt there will be special deals on the XR, at least in the USA, so I don't see what all of the whingeing is about.

While I loved my compact SE, obviously, the mobile phone world has moved on from tiny tots, so, I look forward to the XR
Bonus: Colors! Finally!

Most people don't upgrade every year. Why do you assume they do?

There are 800 million iPhones out in the world today... but only 200 million were sold last year.

And before that... there was some number of iPhones out in the world... but a much smaller number than that sold in the previous year.

The point is... Apple didn't make these 2018 iPhones solely for the owners of 2017 iPhones.

But there's always somebody who is ready to buy a new iPhone at any given time.

Take me for instance. I've had this iPhone 6S Plus for three years. Purchased in 2015 shortly after launch.

I'm ready for a new iPhone now. And there will be others. But no... most of them won't be 2017 iPhone owners.

People don't throw away their phone. They keep reusing it even though they have a new phone. I still use my iphone 4 to play mp3 in the car. All my co-workers that upgrade every year.

Right, take New York for example which would be the most likely place anyone I know would be visiting. The VAT on an iPhone there is 8.875% so that would it make the $999 iPhone XS cost $1087.66

View attachment 781255 When you convert that to Euro it is €931.58 (see attached photo). The phone costs €1,179(VAT incl.) in Ireland and €1,179 minus €931.58 is €247.42. So even with a bad exchange rate, I’ll be saving well over €200. PEACE
Ahem no that is not correct. You then have to add the Ireland VAT at 23% to it as well if you do an official above board and legal comparison.

Hence when you compare like for like you must do that before tax.

What a schmuck! For 749$ you can feed a village in Africa for a week.
Feel free to make your donation.

Well, Tim, if you want to serve everybody, don't ignore those of us that prefer the small 4" phone size.

My gf has the iPhone 7 and it just isn't the phone for me. My SE is more preferable, but I want to see Apple maintain the SE product. The rumour earlier this year about the SE getting a X-line all-screen design, including the notch, was very exciting, and that product is now much more feasible with the release of the Xr using an LCD screen! Hopefully Apple gives us a surprise early next year with an update to the SE. Please, Apple, please!

Yes... some people upgrade every year. But that's unusual in the grand scheme of things.

I just read an article: in 2014 the average upgrade cycle was 23 months.

But recently it has stretched to 31 months. Therefore... people are keeping their phones longer.

If every iPhone user upgraded their phone every year... Apple would have to be selling 600-800 million iPhones every year.

But they are clearly not.

So your earlier question "If iphone keeps getting more expensive... will people stop upgrading every year?" is kinda nonsensical.

People, overall, would need to start upgrading every year before they can stop upgrading every year.

Again... some people upgrade every year... but the vast majority do not.

But if I was to attempt to answer your question... perhaps the smaller subset of people who do upgrade every year might be put-off by these new higher prices.

But honestly... if you're an every-year-iPhone-upgrader... is price really a top concern? :p

Some good news though... if you sell your gently-used one-year-old iPhone... you can recover some of the cost. iPhones have great resale value. So at least you've got that workin' for ya.

Yup. I can't upgrade due to both cost AND the fact my hand can't hold the giant phones :<

No SE (or equivilent), no new phones for me.

Agreed. Luckily, the SE is still a perfectly good phone that should last for several more years, assuming the battery doesn't fail after a year. My first SE failed, but I was on a replacement plan, so got another one at half-cost (not really, I paid a monthly fee leading up to that replacement.). My second SE went for a swim, but luckily bounced back. Still working like a charm, although we're still not at the one-year point for that second phone. We'll see if the battery in this second one suddenly dies. That would be very unfortunate. Not sure if my replacement plan would cover a third one! :)

People only get this angry and hateful because they want it badly. If they didn't want it they wouldn't care about the price. Yet they sit there and see if only it had lasers it would be worth it. They become agitated when others find it with in budget and will buy it in spite of their protests.

Seriously if you find you can not afford a phone you are not likely to have a use that justifies the cost. If that is the case the phone is a luxury.

I am not sure why folks here have to jump on others who are balking about Apple’s ever increasing prices. Yes, some cannot afford it and want it, but not all.

For example, my scenario: I can afford the new phones and don’t want them.

I barely use my $1k 7+, an SE would be fine for my use. I thought I needed a bigger screen, nope. Nowhere near as productive on this as I was my iP 5.

After four years of multiple chances, outlaying good money and multiple iOS devices that exhibit a hardware issue after 11-12 months, I am realizing after 22 years, I no longer want to support this company.

I expect less of Tim & Apple each year in every way, so they can expect far less $ from me going forward. Their attitudes and actions are making it easier to look beyond the orchard. The nice thing is now I have options. :) Competition is a good thing.

I understand that there is a lot of complaining about the price of these phones, but you can always buy an older model at a discount. I would not be surprised if you could buy a new iPhone 7 at a big box store for $350 during the holidays. The vast majority of people will be perfectly happy for several years using this phone for their day to day needs.

In our family, we have 7 people on our cellular plan: 3 young adults, 2 grandparents, wife, and me. We always buy the older models on discount. I am not knocking other peoples’ buying decisions, it’s your money so get what you want. But, I can not imagine paying over $1100 for one phone. My youngest son is a Baseball hound, so his phone sits in a otter box case protected from dirt, cleats, etc.. My older daughter travels a lot and has lost or had her phones stolen numerous times. The grandparents do not push their devices very hard....text, email, calls, directions....that’s it. One grandparent is still using an iPhone 4s.

Clearly, we are not the target market for these high end phones.....but, Apple believes there is definitely a market for them and they are probably correct.

One last point, on tech forums like MR, you can get a skewed view of what you need in terms of technology and specs. I can do 90% of my daily computing with nothing more than an iPhone 6s and a base 2017 iPad (w/BT Keyboard). This includes; creating property management spreadsheets, annotating/editing contracts and reports, developing presentations for local school board, personal finance, etc.. Last year, I paid $350 for the phone and $300 for the iPad. So, for $650, I have two devices that solve most of my needs.

The point is that there are Apple options at lower price points. Let’s see how Apple does in October with the laptops and Mac Mini.....still need good entry level options in the traditional computing space.

Taxes, wherever you are, are not the price of the phone, they’re the price of the taxman. Taxes apply to most everything and it seems difficult to criticise the seller/merchant for costs over which they have little or no control. Mind you, I don’t like high taxes either but I don’t blame the merchant.

Cheers, Azy

Tim living in his own reality distortion field.

The role of the iPhone has become much larger in people's lives, so let it become much larger in their otherwise empty pockets.

I still have my 6S+, which I bought after the 7's came out for a reduced price. It works just fine for my needs - which include support for wired headphones. When the battery goes out on it, I'll try to replace it with another 6S+ if they're still in stock. Currently, my provider still offers them new for $550 - likely not much longer. The improved photography on the new models is nice, but if my main reason for spending mega-bucks for a phone was for a fancy camera I'd just fork over for a nice DSLR digital camera and stick with a moderately priced phone.
I honestly can’t tell the difference between the photos I take on my 6s and X. I’m getting tired of it being the key focus when it comes to demos every fall. Besides, users are mucking up their photos with IG filters anyway.

True, but Androids suck the life out of batteries faster than iPhones, therefore the need for larger batteries.
Geez, my dad’s Android could barely make 8 hours and that was not even making calls on it, just standby.

We ( I ) have all been manipulated by a very smart Marketing Strategy created by Steve Jobs and expanded by Tim Cook and company. Create, in the minds of consumers, the illusion of a NEED. That need is the Status, Life Style and Image created by owning all Apple products. We ( I ) bought in on this myth and now many of us are caught in the Apple Ecosystem. True, the products are nice, work well and integrate with all Apple Products. There comes a time to say Price is a major factor even if we ( I ) can afford the newest toy. When will we ( I) get off this newest Drug, having the newest Apple toy.

That's the way to do it. I'm using an iPhone SE that cost 75 bucks. It's one tenth the price of the iPhone XR and can run the latest OS without any lag. Beyond a certain point, these phones seem capable of opening apps instantly and switching between them with ease, they can shoot decent HD video, and have screens with indiscernible pixel grids. Upgrade if you can afford it, but the additional features are pure luxury, not necessity.
I will be in states soon and will be taking advantage of that $29 battery upgrade for my 6s. The excuses about battery and limited storage should not really be reasons to upgrade often. Take off some of the unnecessary photos, playlist, apps that you are not using. You would be surprised the difference it makes.

I miss the events where Apple shows you the premium product and then slashes the price... those were Steve's days.

I guess its important to note how much of the newness of this phone is the silicon. It's truly impressive and I understand that apple is pushing forward in that tech space. I think we'll be seeing more products with apple X series chips.

However, I still feel that they missed the price point. For the Xr the Xs and the Max. I have an iPhone 6S (screen wrecked) and I'm still having trouble justifying 749 for a new phone. I guess considering how long I've had my phone i could go out an buy a 7 but then it would be outdated in a couple of years.

Considering Apple charges 100 premium for every storage upgrade I would have been okay with a 32GB $649 version. (I know how to use the cloud and I could then justify the $2.99 a month subscription for 200GB of cloud storage)

I just don't want to feel like i'm being robbed.. Apple, you're a trillion dollar company now. Maybe in the pursuit of new silicon and advancing tech you could give the margins on your next-gen technology a slight break?

You do realize for as long as you've had your 6S (presumably since 2015) if you used iCloud storage per their current pricing you would have paid $108 in cloud storage fees (3x12x3) and thus paid more than $750 for your phone? So why are you balking at a $100 price premium with double the storage?

I've bought a new iPhone at launch every year since the 3GS. It started out as $200*, then $400*, then $600, then $650, then $750, then last year $1000. This year the phone I would get is $1150. They say a frog won't jump out of a pot if you heat it slowly, Tim Cook has priced me out of the pot.

*due to how contracts used to work in the US

100% me too, I've also bought every phone since the orignal launch day in 2007, and I just can't stretch to this model. It's not affordable anymore or good value.

It's crazy that they have gone up year on year while at the same time we've been in the biggest financal crisis in a lifetime.

I know my experience is anecdotal, but I'm going to skip upgrading this year for the first time. I'm happy with my iPhone X and there isn't enough difference with the new models to be compelling.

A few things that could have made me more willing to upgrade:
- Higher resolution camera
- Significant battery improvement (5+ hours... or at least give me a battery case!)
- Faster FaceID (I know it is "faster," but I think the fact that they didn't say how much faster means it isn't significant)
- 120 Hz Screen Refresh Rate (Only the touch input refreshes at 120 Hz)
- USB C charging
- Expandable storage (I know I'm dreaming)
- Massively improved Siri
- Massively improved iCloud integration
The technology for 120Hz on OLED has yet to exist. You can’t do it.
