The prices are high, but he’s right. Monthly payments make it easy for people to swallow. If people had to pay in full or pay a subsidy there would be wayyyyy less sales.

People should understand that unless you can afford to pay in full, you can't afford the monthly payment. It's not Apple's job, nor the cell carrier's job, to teach them that though.

The Note 9 was very innovative (though it has its flaws) and the price is maxed out at $1250 — expensive? Totally, but it’s more reasonable

At first, I was a bit ashamed I spent nearly $1500 on my iPhone X (including Applecare and tax) but I've really enjoyed it and it was worth it for me. Of course, I'm certainly not going to buy this year's iPhones since that would be a huge waste but I don't think you need to buy one every single year.

I used to have a Note 8 and it was fantastic in many ways but what eventually drove me crazy was the way it handled music. Unless you're subscribed to a music service it's a pain to move actual pre-owned music files onto the device and have them recognized for playback. It's possible, but a real pain.

Right now, that's still easy to do on an iPhone as iTunes will accept any music file -- even those it can't match. Of course, rumor has it Apple wants to eliminate owned music at which point I may switch back to Android.

The world doesn’t only revolve around the U.S., I don’t have a 30$ monthly deal with my carrier nor do I get the iPhone upgrade program.

I would also love to hear his reasoning behind the inflated pricing in Europe. Even if I add a 20% tax on the dollar prices, the difference is noticeable.

Moreover, even though I could buy it I simply won’t. I cannot connect it to a screen and keyboard/mouse and magically have a Mac. It is still a phone with an ok camera (compared to a compact camera) that softens the details way too much.
Go talk to your EU representatives about that. I believe Apple started paying $15,000,000,000 this year on fines. With all the fines Apple has been paying them lately and some potentially new fines coming up, you really think Apple will tap into their cash hoard to pay them or make YOU pay them?

You could do all of that 10 years ago already, when iPhones were generally much cheaper. As far as I can see, there's no mention of the innovation that would justify the recent price increase.
Agreed. My iPhone 6s Plus was $250 cheaper at launch in 2015 compared to an iPhone Xs Max with the same amount of storage in 2018, and there isn't any reason I can't continue to use it for another year or two.

Basic economics: Apple priced the phone at what the market will bear. Would it sell at $2000 or $3000? Possibly, but they won't sell in volume. Timmy is a smart man. He gets as gets as many people as possible to spend the most money possible to maintain the best profit possible.

People don't complain that Lamborghini are priced in the stratosphere. The sell at that price. Some even buy just because it is expensive; bragging rights (pissing contest).

Better bring back the good old iPhone SE!

Sounds like Tim is on a PR tour to try and justify their profit margins...
I've ordered a XS Max but damn, the prices are outa control.

Yea no kidding, we usually throw them our money too so we can complain from an apple logo device. Epic times.

...or they could just obey the law in the first place and avoid fines.

Just a thought.

Yes. Apple needs to have these margins.
They buy so many things that make very little or no money (yet)
Also, the whole Spaceship thingy was paid by you all.
He should write a Thank You note and send it to all of us.

But of course he won't, because he has to claim that Apple is the most innovative company.
Which - in my opinion - has not been the case after the iPhone 4.

Yes, the iPhone 4. People walked around with Nokia Plastic phones, using LCD screens with zero color accuracy.
The iPhone 4 with full glas and the first retina display was amazing.

Does anyone remember that in iOS, everything should feel natural and not appear out of thin air?
I cannot even count all the hidden gestures and UI features.

The day Apple cannot reach any of these margins, they will decline quickly.
Other companies sell quantity over quality to survive and everyone knows.

In the past we paid the margins for build quality / material and innovation.
Today we pay to finance the free battery programs and cheap screen replacements.

The price basically covers two other phones, even if they are not yours.
It's a shame.

PS: Sorry for the long rant.

The way most people pay for these...they do a deal with a carrier and they pay so much per month, so if you look at even the phone that's priced over $1,000, most people pay $30 a month for it

Where can I get a $1,100 phone for $1 a day Tim Cook? That would take three years to pay it off, what is this guy smoking?

Here is a view of Apple by Seth Godin from his article about three types of companies. One focusing on profit, one focusing on difficulty, and one focusing on important. Guess which one Apple is?

"Apple became the first company to be worth a trillion dollars. They did that by spending five years single-mindedly focusing on doing profitable work. They’ve consistently pushed themselves toward high margin luxury goods and avoided just about everything else. Belying their first two decades, when they focused on breakthrough work that was difficult and perhaps important, nothing they’ve done recently has been either. Tim Cook made a promise to the shareholders and he kept it."
exactly. Thanks.

In Polish situation - just add 23% VAT on this price and even XR is going to be extremely expensive.

3720 PLN for cheapest XR, while you can get SE 32 GB for less than 1199 PLN.

There's an old saying about 'firing' the bad clients and only keeping your good customers. I believe Apple's good customers and the ones they want are the ones that aren't limited by money. Otherwise there would be a phone that's $600 that wasn't made 3 years ago but is the new SE type phone.

So basically I'll keep my 7+ until it dies. And then I'll get it repaired. And when the cycle of break-repair reaches its end, I'll buy the cheapest phone I can find that does the same stuff the 7+ does. Because I don't need memoji's and FaceID or AR or any of that other "innovation" for $1499 or whatever it is. (I could buy a car with that quite literally ..edit: obviously not an Apple car....)

Please don't compare a Lamborghini to a mass produced in conditions that make workers want to kill themselves smartphone ever again.

Given that less people are on the yearly or every other year upgrade cycle now, I can understand the price and capability of a new highest end iPhone is priced as it is.

Would I like it to be cheaper? Sure. Is it going to be? No. Are there cheaper iphones? Yes, from the Xr down to the now entry level 7.

Related but not the same: my Mother’a old hand-me-down 2007 era MacBook finally gave up the ghost last year. She asked to the price of a cheap MacBook. £899.

Complaining bitterly she went down to PC World and bought a HP stream 11 as ‘it will be good enough for what I need it for’. Cue several weeks of bitter complaining about UI differences from her old Mac, performance, keyboard and trackpad deficiencies.

She bought a new MacBook Air not long after. And she’s now happy that she can do what she wants to do without issues.

TL,DR: if you want the BMW experience, pay the BMW ticket price.

Not to mention that if even the iPhone 7 entry model is too expensive, there’s a healthy second hand market for iPhones (at least in the U.K. via CEX etc)

Happens all the time. Like you said, if you want the BMW experience.......

No, it's not cheap to make these phones. It costs about $400 doesn't it? So wouldn't about $800 be a reasonable price? They can charge whatever they want, but it is disingenuous to claim the price is so high because they are not cheap to make. They cost so much because that is the price the market can bear. If we stop paying so much, they will cost less.
