Go talk to your EU representatives about that. I believe Apple started paying $15,000,000,000 this year on fines. With all the fines Apple has been paying them lately and some potentially new fines coming up, you really think Apple will tap into their cash hoard to pay them or make YOU pay them?

Its only partially true. Yes we do have 20-25% Vat but I actually support VAT as it is not possible to "optimize" it. But how come the other companies deals with it. Sure Note 9 is more expensive in Europe than US but it is not even remotely on the level of Apple. They dont do USD to EUR 1 to 1 conversion and add the VAT on top. I mean I would swallow 15% increase but 40% as compared to US is a bit of rip off

You could do all of that 10 years ago already, when iPhones were generally much cheaper. As far as I can see, there's no mention of the innovation that would justify the recent price increase.

The iPhone X and the iPhone XS are the same price. The iPhone 8 is now $100 cheaper than last year, and has only gone up $50 for an upgrade to the XR.

While I agree they have the possibility of a hefty price point, "justifying the recent price increase" seems a bit dramatic given that there are options.

An iPhone isn't a necessity like food, water, gasoline, electricity —it's a freaking toy for 98% of the population. Apple can set any price it wants for its toys and if we don't buy them, they won't get sold.
Every person griping about the extremely high price of these Appletoys sounds like a spoiled brat. Are Mercedes Benz websites filled with endless posts complaining about the price of their cars? BMW?, Canon cameras? Etc etc etc.
The entitlement assumed by the hoards of Apple complainers is epic.

In Polish situation - just add 23% VAT on this price and even XR is going to be extremely expensive.

3720 PLN for cheapest XR, while you can get SE 32 GB for less than 1199 PLN.

Polish market is irrelevant for Apple. Its dominated by Windows and Android with general population having low purchase power as compared to other EU countries.

Fair enough. Too bad the one option I actually care about is gone, i.e. a modern phone in a small form factor. That's the one I would actually pay good money for.

Tim Cook did not say that you needed to buy a new phone every year.

By using the sort of payment plan he's suggesting that $1,100 phone will cost more like $1,600 over three year time period if not more due to interest on each year. There isn't even in existence a plan that costs $30 a month for a $1,100 phone even when spread out over 36 months. It's more like $50 a month for a 3 year plan for this phone and even that is with a substantial ($200-$300) upfront payment.

Just ridiculous, he's so out of touch with reality if he believes what he said.

Except... Apple are claiming they a making a phone for everyone. Not everyone owns a Mercedes.

I think it’d be easier to swallow if they’d configured them more like:

Xs:
128GB $999
512GB $1,199

Xs Max:
128GB $1,099
512GB $1,299

At the end of the day they’re already marketing and pushing them as ultra deluxe models, why the extra price gouging by starting at an uncomfortably tight storage tier where you have to turn off half the features? Yes they lose the $150 upsell to 256GB but do they really need that for these phones to be profitable successes?

Better bring back the good old iPhone SE!
Bring back the SE with a bigger display in nearly the same physical size as the original SE for $699. Apple killed it because they priced it too low. There are plenty of users who are willing to pay for what is basically a smaller version of the XR.

6.5" iPhone XS Max - $1099
5.8" iPhone XS - $999
6.1" iPhone XR - $749
~5" iPhone XE - $699

Why not?

Only reason I can think of is notch width. Perhaps they could make the earpiece speaker narrower or something to make the notch smaller. Why does it need to be smaller? Because there won't be room for the status bar on either side of it.

My wife got her SE wet yesterday and it started buzzing like crazy and the corner of the display started getting darker. I advised her to turn it off immediately and put it in a sealed bag with a DampRid packet. Hopefully it's not ruined but when I told my wife that she would have to pay $999 for the smallest new iPhone that is way bigger than her SE, she was pretty upset and said she was really pissed off at Apple for not making usable phone sizes for women. I suppose I could buy her an older 8 or 7, but then you have longevity concerns (my wife usually goes 3-4 years), and they're like a couple millimeters smaller. I've got her running on an old iPhone 5 now with iOS 10 and it is not going well with a lot of slowness and stuttering. She literally just texted me "So no Hey Siri, huh?"

Thats just bunk, almost every major android phone maker is able to produce and copy features from iPhone cheaply. It is indeed quite cheap to produce an ARM-Cortex processor somewhere between $1-6, Apple unnecessarily is pricing products to make extra buck. What is 64, 256, 512 GB categories? Thats just purposely forcing people to pay up premium prices. This is not going to be sustainable, there is a limit to how long can you sell us cheap tech for premium prices. Entire android ecosystem has caught up and they produce an equally compelling and affordable product. Semiconductor prices have dropped like anything. What is Apple selling then? Hogwash? Apples pricing is not correct.

That's fair lol. I'm lucky I enjoy larger phones, so I'm not sad to see the back of the smaller devices.

If you're not considering money down, yes there's no plans offering $30 a month, but with money down T-Mobile offers all variants at $30 a month but the cost is absolutely atrocious. A 512gb XS Max requires $729.99 up front. Insane

Tim Cook is completely removed from reality.
If you could drive around in Apple Cars, test AR/VR prototypes and get stock options that pile up in your basement(s),
you might suffer from a skewed perception of the world.
In addition, you can visit the US president and exempt your products from any trade war consequences.
... and charge any fictional currency exchange rate in foreign countries.

I wonder what newspaper Tim Cook might buy.
