I fail to see the issue with the case and its design. Its no more and no less than what was needed to give a phone more battery life. Its removable and its not like its part of the phone's permanent design. Other cases are available and if looks are a sole reason to buy then other cases might be the better option.

Is the suggestion to taper the battery so that it rolls into the thick part and back out more gradually?

Personally don't think it is that ugly, kinda cool in fact, but there are plenty of ways to make a battery case without a hump that still is able to be put on and removed from an iPhone quickly and easily using the same sort of silicone material. If they didn't want there to be a hump they sure would have found a way to do it. I think whoever designed it actually thought this looked great and others agreed. No one liked the look of the white stripes embedded in the back of the phone casing either when it first came out but I don't think people feel so strongly against it anymore. Call it stylistic innovation perhaps and tomorrow you may see other case companies trying to copy the design.

He has a fair point about the ease of putting it on/off.

However, it'd be even better if you didn't have to constantly put it on and off. You know, if the hole for the headphone jack was large enough to accommodate non-Apple headphones. Otherwise I don't see why it's something you'd remove often.

It's feel like a dirty compromise suggested by "the guys". In the old days Apple pushed forward to really solve a design problem. Tim Cook seems to be hiding behind these "guys", while Steve Jobs had a real opinion about things like this and pushed his guys to greatness.

Jobs threw a fit when he couldn't get a slot loading CD-ROM in those colored CRT iMacs. Do you think this iHump case would suffice?

Two issues Tim.

1. You approved this fugly case, why? Is profit that important ? Brand reputation before $
2. When buying a case with an extended battery, the ability to take remove the iPhone is very long way down the list. Shockingly, once you the the phone in, for most people it will remain in that state, probably until they decide to sell it and want to clean it.

You have launched a product people are laughing at, including the faithful, time to play CEO and not the really nice bloke! This reminds me of apple before Jobs came back, some silly products that should never have made it past the conception stage.
You do realize the hockey puck mouse came out on Steve Jobs watch. I seem to remember that product being ridiculed quite a bit. And that was something actually announced on stage not a silent update in stores.

Yeah and it was Ruby and others who argued against it because they knew consumers would want CD-RW capabilities.

Jobs was furious when he realized that the original iMac shipped with a tray-loading CD-ROM drive, and insisted that future models use less common slot-loading mechanisms instead. But slot-loading drive models tended to lag behind on cutting-edge technologies such as CD burning, and Jobs feared he’d made a costly mistake. Jobs told Isaacson he “felt like a dope” and “thought that we had missed it. We had to work hard to catch up.”[/QUOTE]

I actually agree. I've owned MANY battery cases, for many models of iPhone, and I'm excited to receive my Apple battery case.

I agree, although I would like one with a fake Hans Solo sticking out of it. It's truly form following function. It is better than every other battery case except in capacity (and price, but hey, it's Apple). I love that it charges the iPhone first and discharges itself first. I love that it will fit on a dock. I love that it shows the battery meter on the phone. I love that it has a pass-through lightning port. I love that it seems like it's easy to hold (from what reviewers say). I love that's it's easy to take on and off. After the charge is gone, I can just put the bulky case in my backpack or car.

I actually like this case better than most things Apple has made recently. It seems to make the right compromises (at least for me). Also, a big, bulky case is never going to look good. Now I gotta figure out how to 3D print Hans Solo.

I'm usually writing iPhone programs with my phone attached to the computer, so I rarely ever need any extra battery, but it would be something I might take on an overnight trip.

There's a bump on the back of the case. But what is it for? Doesn't that make it harder to hold the phone? How do you put it in your pocket? It's just weird.

Maybe they put the bump there so that when you lay the phone down the camera lens doesn't touch down on the table.

I wonder if you would be able to use the phone while it is laying on the table with that bump there.

These two make a great duo:

the case reminds me of that weird trend of having a "donut" under your forhead from a few years ago

Good explanations from Tim. People just love to **** on Apple. I've never seen a genuinely attractive battery case, and while this one doesn't look great, it also doesn't look terrible. The silicone looks nice and comfy and on the table it'll probably be on its back anyway. Moreover, as Tim points out this isn't necessarily an "on-all-the-time" type of case. Most people are probably satisfied with the battery life but this is a nice option for those rare instances you won't be able to charge for 24 hours+. Most people don't need a battery case AT ALL.

And yes, it's also nice it slips on easy and the case isn't three pieces of hard plastic that need to be snapped together.

It's an accessory!!!!!!!!!!!

But why? If not profit. 7 years of iPhones with increasing battery life, to finally launch an official battery case that is so damn ugly? Though that is not the real issue, for the first time apple is admitting fault and saying the battery is not enough. They have never done that , hence a battery case was deemed unnecessary .

In my opinion , remove the apple logo, and this thing is a very cheap knock off made in China. Slap the apple logo, it's $100.

A flexible case for a battery - great idea!*

*Until the cables break after flexing too much, kinda like the MacBook external power supply cables....
