And what prevents governments or institutions mass brute-force decrypting that data if they get their hands on it?
Why on earth isn't Apple building their own datacenters if they care so much about privacy and security? They have enough money to bypass AWS, GCP and Azure. Most companies actually choose cloud hosting services to save money, because they don't have enough cash on hand to build their own datacenters.

Apple probably is building data centers, but it takes both time and money.

Well I'm glad someone said it.
The infamous (& PG-13, shield your eyes) exchange re Zuckerberg and Assange pretty well sums up the problem with facebook as an organization.

Ehh, mods, plz remove if too egregious.

I trust Julian Assange even less than Zuck.

... Have you ever thought how Google makes any money? You and your information is the product that they sell to companies. . ..

If I wanted to buy your data from Google, why would I pay Google? I can pay the guy in front of me, that just bought the data from Google, and I can get it probably cheaper from that guy instead of from Google.

This business plan of Google's sucks. Anyone can just buy the data from Google and copy their business. I'm surprised no one has tried to do that.

Performing an HTTP GET request with every letter pressed, including the longitude and latitude, the key that was pressed, and the final string, along with local area network data sounds like privacy invasion with little benefit to me, but a lot of benefit for Apple. Don't get me wrong, I like Apple, but technology like this shouldn't require an engineering degree and technical tools to understand and manage privacy. It should be put in very clear terms, and interfaces should make it very clear, how to turn off such invasive services. Even better, let consumers turn it off without punishing us with severely degraded apps. Quite often there is no reason other than the benefit of the data collectors for such data collection.

I also wish Apple would make a social network, a generic one this time, not one specifically to push artists and only on iTunes or some bs like that. This field is beyond ripe for someone NOT financed by selling user data or advertising (Google+, Facebook, Twitter) to step in. It's aggravating we're so... stuck. They could of course integrate it with iTunes Music, document sharing via iCloud Drive to others, and others of their services, just not shove it down our throat, but to give it synergy bonuses for them. They could use this opportunity to give Apple Maps more visibility, etc, etc.
Let them provision a wireless charger (of whatever making) and secure their stuff with more than blanc passwords first

Apple has been preaching privacy as a main feature of their platform for years.

False for Apple devices, at least for iOS, since they have no guest login and require an Apple ID to track everything via iCloud.

Android has guest login so there's nothing to track.

Here he is talking out of his ass again. Stay in your lane Tim.

I've seen firsthand how "unsecure" some Apple technologies and work has been over the years....... the statement markfc made about it biting them in the ass later will prove to be 100% correct.

Except he still would be right. This didn’t happen because of a bug in a Facebook. This happened because of that’s how Facebook operated.

Exactly why I mentioned technologies and work. :)

I am not sure what that has to do with my point. Apple doesn't monetize our data, unlike many other tech companies.

Apple only leak your private nude photos to the internet for everything to laugh at. Keep apologizing though.

Except the statement can’t bite him in the ass because Tim Cook is being snarky about a business model that doesn’t care about privacy.

Apple didn’t leak nude photos. Stop spreading misinformation.

Yet it's totally fine for iTunes to have rated R movies and shows full of nudity, and music with racist epithets.

Seriously, what does "hate speech on our App Store" even mean? The App Store full of apps that encourage physical violence against the current President. What if I submitted an app that did the same for a previous President?

You'd be labeled a racist and treasonous by a bunch of Tide Pod eating Liberal Millennials.

“As Cook has said many times in the past, "you" are not Apple's product and Apple does not make its money selling customer data.”

I sure have met a bunch of people who responded cynically when I’ve said this about the biggest difference between Google or Facebook and Apple. They nod their head as if they’re wise and I’m a fool. Apple must do it too. They just don’t admit it. It’s not just Democrat vs Republican. Everybody always thinks that being cynical is the same thing as being informed... when usually it’s the exact opposite. I’ve been in the Apple camp since long before this debate was a thing. Every time I’ve gotten frustrated with Apple (and there have been times), this is what keeps me with Apple. Apple took my money up front, and didn’t sell me to other companies. Not that they didn’t then try to monetize the hell out of me (as everyone exasperated over the 5GB free iCloud already knows). But they’re not selling me behind my back. They’re just saying, “If you’ve still got money, I’ve got some other shiny things to go with that.” And it’s that up-front aspect to their business they should be congratulated for.

I’m calling BS on that, unless you’d care to post a link to back that up. Read the link first before you post it, though. You’ll likely discover that you’re grossly misinformed. Then you might want to man up, come back, and admit you were wrong.

He’s talking about the time that people used a phishing attack to access celebrity nudes.

He's trolling. Don't bother.

Here's an easy one Jailbreaking.

My thumbs up was actually directed at how smug Tim Cook's answer was and how the poster said that it could bite him in the butt in the future.

Not saying Apple isn't secure they do seem like one of the most secure tech companies but nothing is perfectly secure in tech. Hackers are smart and Cooks karma may come back and haunt him.

Jailbreaking is a poor example. People who jailbreak are cooperative in the process. The device owner WANTS to jailbreak, so they assist as required (unlocking their device, providing credentials and so on).

If someone can get my data without my consent or knowledge then I’d consider that a serious breach of security. For example, through a corrupt text message or by visiting a website designed to inject malware into my device.

There's a big difference between curating the App Store and curating a platform that was designed for people to express themselves and share their thoughts, feelings, pics, etc. with others.

FB is not bad in and of itself though I'm generally not a fan of companies that give free stuff in exchange for my data. But really, is sharing my contacts and political affiliation with a company seriously worse than my data getting stolen from Equifax or a bank where someone now has everything they need to steal my identity??

Some people are just angry and need a scapegoat to blame for whatever is ailing them. Success breeds contempt and FB has reached a level of success few other companies will achieve. So they're being blamed for depression, the elections, downfall of democracy, etc. when all of this is, including all the bad actors that have always plagued humankind, is just a reflection of society being played out on the world's most popular social platform.

If I remember correctly, during the iPod's halcyon days, it was being blamed for hearing loss, anti-social behavior and all sorts of nonsense. Once again, people are blaming someone or something rather than take accountability for their own actions and the ones who benefit most? Politicians and the media.

Still promoting this lie?

Users on iCloud had their Apple IDs phished. So did Google (by the same persons).

Apple didn’t leak anything.
