Massive corporations the size of Apple essentially do run themselves. Name the CEO of Coca-Cola or McDonald’s. You probably can’t without a google search.

Putting a business on the map takes genius. Bringing a business back from the dead takes genius. Overseeing continued growth of an existing corporate mega-giant with unlimited resources, a priceless brand name and incredible momentum doesn’t take much.

The shift to services will be Cook’s legacy, for better or worse. That seems to be all him.

This is absolutely wrong. Tripling the worth of a company does not happen automatically. The company’s path and focus do not happen automatically. The shift to services didn’t happen automatically. It doesn’t matter if I can name the bosses at every major corporation, they get paid as much as they do because their board appreciates their worth. Cook could do what many here want and focus on the Mac (to the exclusion of toys)... but he’s accepting that most money comes from their phone, growth could come from services, health is being beachheaded by the watch, and AirPods are the hottest wearable. There are obviously a lot of people in here who have never been anywhere near an executive team, but large companies do not run themselves. Executives make decisions and those are framed and focused by the chief executive.

I have only made my way through 5 pages of comments so far, but they did not disappoint for sure.
I am glad the vocal majority agrees that the title is ridiculous.

My favorite comment thus far though:
Yes guys, despite what is said here, Tim Cook IS a genius and HAS taken Apple to the next level.

Some people will hate and ignore his contributions to Apple, but people who know, know.

I hope this isn't a joke comment. If serious, I've been laughing for a couple minutes.
"people who know, know". Care to elaborate? Because all I see is that Apple learned more how to make money via services and decided to ignore making quality products. Please don't go on about how their watches have LITERALLY changed and SAVED lives. If stranded somewhere, that's the last watch I hope I have. Show me a watch that is actually a functional watch first and fancy toy later and I'll be impressed.

Before I used apple products, I was amazed by what I saw compared to others. When I got my first MacBook Air in 2012, I finally understood the appeal. I'm typing on one now actually as my backup machine at work. What a great keyboard, amazing touchpad, etc. Shame 2012 is the last year Apple really amazed me. This book should be titled "2011, The Death of Apple Innovation". Can keep the same photo on the book.

A cult of fans buying everything you produce doesn’t hurt either.
Not so much a cult, but more along the lines of Apple products being the cool thing to own, saw an article the other day that a massive percentage of Teenagers in the US own an iPhone. People completely ignore brand power when it is the main source of Apple's success.

Check out the Apple Watch. Entirely created under his watch.

Except the Apple Watch which is really good, name something else... crickets...
The entire computer line up is outdated and way overpriced.

My only complaint about his management is that he has allowed Jony Ive to have too much freedom. That's how we end up with keyboards that are too thin to be useful, iPhones and iPads that bend, and iOS UIs where you can't tell what's clickable from text

You know what, Apple does have brand power. It has brand power, because, at least imo, they produce products people want to buy, enjoy using and generally has a long life span. Some people may associate an iphone with "you're holding it wrong" and that is their slant, others may associate the iphone with a device they enjoy using or find easy to use and maybe this is the slant of these customers. With so many customers and so many devices out there, there is no one size fits all narrative of how Apple came to be this massive company and why the brand is powerful.

Plenty of companies make equally good and even better products, but they just don't have the brand power of Apple. Like it or not Apple is the cool brand to own, sure they make nice looking products that generally are easy to use but they are not the only company doing it. Steve Jobs did an incredible job to build Apple from nothing and through innovation and making products for the people he built a very strong brand with plenty of momentum. Tims real test will be when Apple has to go through hard times, we shall see if he has the vision to save it like Jobs did.

I think Cook has done a sterling job. Perfect? No, of course not, but I’d love to see his detractors have a go.

I bet they’ve sold more AirPods than Apple Watch. Apple’s always been criticized for overpriced, outdated computers. That’s not a Tim thing.

Tim Cook, the Genius Who Turned Apple into Burberry.

But seriously, I’m dying to read this biography so I can finally learn what’s been keeping Tim so busy that he’s forgotten to oversee an update to the Mac Pro for more than half a decade.

I’m not complaining though. I can’t imagine the amount vision and drive it takes to get Oprah onto the product map. Only a CEO like Tim Cook could have accomplished such a feat.

Not going to read any of the comments. On a good day, when the subject is only tangentially about Apple people come out in droves to hate on Tim Cook. For a post specifically about Tim Cook and evidently written with a favorable opinion of his tenure there is no point in reading most of the posts. I'm really tired of hate.

Well I saw a new MacBook Air colour I think? But nope sorry, was in an Apple store last week and the iMacs looked EXACTLY the same as before to me.. what new iMac are you talking about?

Yes I am being sarcastic but do you see the point? They are small refreshes and nothing more, bar the Air. But the iMacs design hasn’t been changed for I think it’s 6 or 7 years now, most cars will have been changed twice in that time! A car, not a desktop computer..... and by companies with far far far far less cash and resources.
I just want to make sure I am understanding correctly. You are ragging on the Air because it has new colors, but then go on to say that the thing wrong with the iMac is that it hasn't had a casing redesign? You can't have your cake and eat it too.

FWIW, the iMac is in desperate need of a refresh. The bezels are ridiculous in 2019.

AirPods.
A12 processor.
Face ID.
Touch ID.
I'm 100% sure you'll disagree, but the HomePod is a fantastic product albeit expensive.

Their computer has been priced high since they first came out, that's nothing new. Outdated? The Mac Pro is sure.

A better camera or a better screen does not make a product better. Better is subjective. Apple is a cool brand to own and have brand power, because they have figured out what their target demographics are and what these customers want. For Apple, being in this unique position with a powerful brand is something many companies would roll-over for. And sure, they aren't the only company offering these products, and competition is a great way to spur greatness.

And if your narrative is, apple products are cool to own and that is the reason people buy apple products, then take it to the bank. There's an old golf expression...it all looks the same on the scorecard.

I’m surprised by the number of newbie accounts that signed up today just so they could spit venom into this thread...

It’s undeniable the contribution that Tim made to Apple. It doesn’t matter if you are the most ardent critic of him.

Well you and I will never see eye to on eye on this because we are coming from completely different points of view. You are valuing Tim's "achievements" in maintaining and even increasing Apple's position as a money-making-machine despite the fact that their products have turned to crap.

I, on the other hand, value Tim, and Apple, based on their ability to create brilliant products, regardless of how much money they rake in. I would vastly, vastly prefer a small, struggling Apple that continued to produce excellent products, both software and hardware, to the bloated marketing-of-crap machine they have become.

But hey, if you want to really show how much you value people making tons of $$ selling crap, I found this amazing Diamond HDMI cable for you to purchase!

I value Tim's achievements (without quotes) on increasing the value of the Apple brand, producing products people want to buy, plus more. Obviously the definition of "brilliant products" will be a personal definition, as is "turned to crap" is a personal definition. The corollary of producing products people want to buy has been the financial success of Apple, all of which flies in the face of much of the hyperbole present in this thread.

Two subjective viewpoints with one common point. Apple is a money making machine.

You're both missing the point and sound like belligerent politicians. Some of those things are gimmicks and some will likely pave the way for a more useful application that isn't a gimmick. It's not a mutually exclusive scenario that ends where it starts.

Features can be innovation, too.
Why do you tell Woz that?

Which of Cook's contributions qualify as genius? Jobs' personal vision and standards are lengendary. He defined the Apple brand. Head-turning products were invented under his watch and with his input. Cook is a spreadsheet jockey. Original products and services introduced after Jobs' passing haven't matched the revenues of existing ones.
Um, his best in the world supply chain management? He is THE best and was that genius during the Jobs era too. Do you have any idea how insane Apple’s supply chain is and the complexity behind it? You don’t. Cook is a genius. Genius, genius, genius.

Apple is OBJECTIVELY a stronger company today than any time during the Jobs era.

Services are growing at 20%, so the story isn’t over. Cook also managed to sell 3X as many iPhones as Jobs ever did at his peak. He’s taken everything to the next level and introduced a leader in silicon, wearables, and services.

I honestly feel sad for the people who don’t recognize the genius of Tim Cook. It was not a joke; he is a genius.

Yeah as a consumer of their products the first thing I care about is their awesome supply chain, not their products which have gone stale since Tim was CEO. Well i guess its good to know that their will be plenty of the MacPro when they finally update it...
