Well I have to disagree with Tim Cook. I got rid of my iPad and Macbook for the Surface Pro 4. Not because the Surface is better, I got it for the convenience of a 2 in 1 device. I am an Apple customer who left Apple (I still have an iPhone and Apple Watch) because of their refusal to make a convenient 2 in 1 device. It's sad I wish Apple would jump on board. To assume the demand is not there is just silly.

There's obviously a huge disconnect between Tim Cook and his customers. He either needs new advisors that can read public forums, or maybe he should fire up Macrumors.com on his new iPad Pro and do some light reading.
If his sales numbers keep increasing yearly why should he care about changing his strategy for future products.

Windows 10 got better by undoing a lot of Windows 8. Surface Pro and Surface Book are trending back towards a traditional laptop.
People don't like change. It is why folks in here are arguing that Apple shouldn't go the same route. When Apple does (because it is likely they will) it will be done in a way that folks will be happier with (generally speaking).

And plenty of us don't care about this feature too.

Maybe I'm the minority, but I do think what you do on a PC or Laptop is not something you'd do on a touch based tablet.... as well, the tablet is made for consumption with some authoring.

Let me put it this way... if my MacBook Pro screen could just come off and I could move to the couch and continue to work... I wouldn't. Nothing I do on my MacBook would I want to do on a Tablet.
I will give you that. Me I am doing some complex work on the laptop, Surface Pro, then I get tired of work, move to couch for entertainment. Guess what, I use the same device to play games, watch a movie, control my entertainment, read a book, chat on social media, or whatever without changing my system. You, most likely will need to go get an iPad or squint at the phone to do the same. Understand my point?

Apple isn't afraid to cut off older software, but I doubt they would want a split line where some Macs are running on one architecture and others on another. For example, would Microsoft write two versions of Office for OS X, or would they write for ARM, in which case the more powerful Macs would not be able to take advantage of the extra power of x86?
What extra x86 power? ;)

Why would anyone buy a PC? Well I bought a PC because my macbook pro died. Turns out OSX runs much better on a pc than it does on a mac, while providing thousands of dollars in savings (something apple customers care little about).

Plus gaming. I run a PC and a Mac right next to each other (on dual monitors) and use Synergy to share a keyboard and mouse between them. It is utopia.

I'd love to see a Surface Book Mac Machine. Essentially a MacBook where you can pull off the screen and use it as a touch tablet.

Complete BS. Plenty of us want that.
You're right plenty of "US" on MR want that. The other 99% of the world isn't thinking the same way and I wish MR members would stop thinking they were Apple's only customers. While I wouldn't mind seeing an "Mac OS X-based iPad" I can see where the honeymoon would wear off soon around here and people would be saying, "Mac-based iPad is here....Now what is Apple gonna do next to please us?"

I know I'm probably the minority but I trust Tim's opinion. As long as they keep innovating and updating Mac's I'll be fine. Our 6s Plus's and iMac (or whatever mac) is a great combo for my wife and I.

So, Thursday, I went out and purchased a surface pro 4 after learning that The smart pencil would not be available. Notably we are at the four year mark, where Steve Jobs roadmap ends. Tim Cook is proving to be the next John Scully.

So, it's goodbye Apple Inc (not apple computer.)
I will be selling my Macbook pro, two Macbook airs, iMac mini, , and a 6s iPad Air and iPad mini, two apple thunderbolt monitors (I will keep the apple TV's for now. ) You guys suck. I also cancelled my order for the iPad pro.

For 60% of what I get on eBay for that stuff, I will get two surface pro 4's (I7 and I 5) two docks two great 4K monitors, and two kindle fires (for the kids, as I never use my iPads anymore)

Exactly why Tim Cook would I not want my Tablet and PC in the same machine !?! Especially when they are the same size?

iPad sales numbers are dropping. And they need more than the iPad Pro to prop their tablet business back up.

I love how a small minority of people are obsessed with swiping their fingers all over their screens.

Complete BS. Plenty of us want that.

Define "many" All in one devices, as Tim Cook points out, often do nothing well in an attempt to do everything. I think he is absolutely correct in saying Mac and iPad convergence is currently not in the picture at Apple.

What I would like to see is seamless transition from one device to another. I really don't care about the OS as long as I can use each device's strengths and easily move form one to another. Apple is already heading in this direction with handoff, such as how i can answer a call on my Mac and not have to drag my iPhone out of my briefcase. I'd like to to be able to open Office on the Mac and have it ask if I want to continue editing the document I last had open on my iPad. I don't want nor need a converged device that attempts to put all of the features of desktop software on a tablet; and frankly, for me, trying to use a pencil to replace a trackpad or mouse is annoying as all get out for many tasks. I like having two external monitors on my Mac when I need them. Trying to put ports on the iPad would make it harder to use since it would no longer be a tablet but a touch input device attached to a bunch of cables that make it hard to use as a tablet.

Does that mean that in some not so near future the devices won't merge? Possibly, when we have super high powered yet small batteries, fast wireless transfer rates for graphics so there is no lag compared to a wired connection, etc.

No, not even close. Keep in mind that even in an overall market of declining tablet sales, Apple sells more iPads in a single quarter than the total number of Surface Pros sold by Microsoft since launch a few years ago. In addition, sales of Apple laptops have been doing relatively well compared to the overall market.
You have to realize that Surface is just one vendor in the hybrid 2-1 market. These devices are booming and hurting iPad sales.

"We feel strongly that customers are not really looking for a converged Mac and iPad," said Cook....

"YET."

Times-A-Changin'.

Agree. an apology to this convergence is a car that can be used as a truck and sedan. this truck-sedan can do it all: big load and light daily commute. what gives? well, gas, big, heavy, and not as agile.

Not fully understand what is under the hood, consumers oversimplify the concept of combining osX and iOS. one to rule them all. but life is not perfect, and something has to give. you can't be both mobile/agile yet powerful. that is why we have a big truck for heavy load and car for daily commute. you can see people drive pick-up truck for daily commute but there are only small number of them.

No matter how good a laptop is, it can't replace my desktop for serious work. and my desktop can't replace my laptop for traveling. each device has its own advantages. you can combine them into one but it will lose those advantages.

Microsoft Surface is attractive to tech and spec-love people, but it will never be popular among casual users.
You ever heard of a crossover or CUV/SUV? They are selling very well. Not everyone wants to buy a car and a truck. A CUV can do both at half the cost.

Seriously this is just ridiculous corporate BS. I've had people call in for tech support who only had their iPad and got rid of their computer. Then they forget their screen passcode and are REQUIRED to use a computer to fix the issue. Until such time as issues like that can be solved on device without a computer being needed the iPad replacing a PC is laughable. Tim Cook seems like a nice enough guy but sometimes he talks out of his ass

This is why I have never bought an ipad. It's eco system is too closed and it can't act like a macbook/laptop. I'll stick to my MBPr or if I want the combo tablet/laptop I'll have to switch to MS when I need to upgrade. At this point improvements in laptops, tablets and smartphones are so marginal I see little reason to rush out and upgrade these days.
