I'm not sure people understand how Apple launches products. Dropping a mention into random interviews is not how it's done.

Yet every time Tim sneezes, people post "he didn't slip in a major Mac announcement!"

No, I think there's a bunch of people on here believe that Tim reads these forums and therefore that repeated moaning about the lack of Mac news will somehow goad him into releasing new product

AR also has more marketing/advertising opportunities whether it's pointing at an ad, billboard or packaging to show a trailer/commercial or provide a coupon or directions, to larger applications.

VR is totally immersive. It's great - but is limited to the room you're in.

AR is the future, but right now VR is better because it's been in development for decades, where as AR is still a relatively new technology.

VR is just a stopgap until AR displays and technology can get good enough to do both in one device.

Stereo speakers? Isn't stereo achieved in landscape by combining the (one) speaker at the bottom plus the earpiece speaker? How does this needed the remove of the jack? Tim?

It's possible that the speaker is behind the speaker grill that occupies the space where the headphone jack previously was. The space behind the other speaker grill can now be used for other stuff. The iPhone is definitely jam packed. In iPhone dimension terms, the jack does take up quite a bit of space.

Although, what I don't get is - if Samsung can fit a headphone jack AND a dual micro-sim/micro SD slot in a smaller form than the 7 Plus, why can't Apple?

Not having the headphone jack is one less point of ingress for water, it makes it easier to maintain waterproof status.

It does require fewer points to seal, sure, but that's just a nice byproduct compared to all the precious real estate they freed up on the inside. The point is that they could have perfectly well made the phone water resistant if the jack was still there (case in point, the 6S was basically water resistant already in many tests).

They could, but they chose not to.

Sorry Tim, its education, gaming and porn. The latter will make it "very interesting" for a lot of people indeed.

All this time I've did not event contemplate that porn had jumped on the VR ship. You are right, gaming and porn will make it very successful

I fully agree with Tim. I love technology but have zero interest to put on goggles or to move to another reality in any other way or form. Pokemon Go, which I don't even play, is however a great example what is possible in this arena and how it can benefit or make the already existing surroundings more interesting or informative. Glad Apple is choosing their plays carefully.

I grudgingly admit that until the holodeck, Tim is right. Augmented reality has absolutely ridiculous applications and it will be delivered probably with something like google glass, but in 10-15 years. All the information in the world coming to you as you need it about everything you are looking at and doing now. Virtual reality will be a fun past time, augmented reality could be world changing. You go on a nature hike and see a bird and the augmented reality IDs the bird, or trees and tells you all about them. All that * 100. You are talking with a sales associate and have the body language app running and communicates they are nervous, determines their heart is racing - assesses they are angry. Medicine and all else. Could be huge.

Or stereo speakers...

Adding another internal speaker has zero conflict with an emphasis on wireless... Actually they greatly enhance the experience of using the iPhone without any external devices, which is a huge plus to the vast majority of users. Haven't you ever tried to show a quick youtube video to someone on a whim, only to be let down by how hard it is to hear? Reviewers have verified Apple's claim that iPhone 7 is literally twice as loud as the 6/6S, with front-facing stereo separation to boot.

Wireless charging is most definitely in the mix. Apple is just waiting for a better solution like WattUp to become more viable, because having to put your phone directly on a charging pad negates the biggest reason to go wireless in the first place. I'm pretty sure the only reason they did wireless charging on the Watch was to test it out on a product where charging speed is a much smaller issue (thanks to the tiny battery), and to make waterproofing easier.
Also you almost never use the watch while charging - you do want to use your phone or pad while charging all the time. Wireless charging removes that option and so is currently a bad fit for devices.

True, though I'm sure plenty of people would want to use their watch while charging if they could :D

You are right of course, I was being cheeky.

With these last product releases and bugged software, I think Tim is living in "alternate reality"...

Imagine the applause here if Apple included the airpods which their ceo calls "the future we all should go for" without raising the price again.
I'm guessing they considered it, ran the numbers, and decided the time wasn't right.

But if you offered to buy everyone a free set of AirPods, I bet you'd get a lot of applause. I'd even clap for you. I think you should do it. It would make you feel all warm inside.

Translation from Tim, the new MacBooks GPUs will not be able to run VR hardware.

AR is harder than VR. With VR, all you're doing is rendering a single 3D scene twice, from 2 slightly different angles. There's a lot of caching and optimizing you can do that makes it so that rendering it twice doesn't take too much longer than rendering it once, so it's possible that it's not much harder than an ordinary game. You need to render it really fast and at a high resolution... that's about all.

With AR, you need to do all the same stuff as VR, but ontop of that, you need to also take in a video stream and identify objects in real time. Computer Vision is far harder than 3D rendering.

Tim is right, unfortunately.

The future will look a lot like this.
