I remember the iPod fatty.

This is a long over due upgrade. I know many people are disappointed with the ATV4 not having 4K, but I am just happy with the app store.

I have each of the older ATVs and a few of the ATV3s. My family loves them and the ATV is the most used electronic in my home by far. So, having an Appstore will probably make us love them more.

I wished it had 4K (even though I do not have a 4K TV), but I find it surprising that so many people were surprised that the ATV4 does not have 4K.

I'm going to wait until i see some reviews and get an idea how it handles my own rips within iTunes, if it does so no better than the current ATV which I have and mostly use to Airplay I may pass, but if it does handle the organization of tv content of my own better I'll pick one up before the holidays

Me too. Really I want a VLCTV box that plays anything. I have an Apple TV but personally I’ve retitred my old Mac Pro as Media Centre instead.

On another note when are we going to get a reporter with the balls to question this evasive fool properly? ;
News - Hi Tim, and welcome to the show. So, the environment it says here, is one of your top prioritites.
Tim - Yes, we at Apple think that our children and our childrens' children should be able to enjoy consuming as many Apples as they choose in safety and for as long as possible.
News - That sounds great Tim. Tell me, when my SSD fails outside of the warranty and asuming I’m not part of a class action, I then have to bin the entire internal assembly instead of getting a simple repair. Almost like binning the Apple with a wormhole instead of cutting the bad part out. Is that better for the environment?
Tim - Well at App…hold on I have to take this………….

I think the lack of 1080p on the ATV2 when it was released was more surprising than 4k on the ATV4. 1080p TVs were more widely in use and more content was available for 1080p in 2010 then 4K TVs and content is today.

I read a business insider article about the fast adoption of 4k TVs, but even in their research they predicted that only 10% of US homes will have 4K TVs by the end of 2018.

I just don't get it
I watch Netflix and rent iTunes movies and use AirPlay and iCloud music library for music
Why would I need or even just 'want' to upgrade to this?
Especially since the old perfectly capable model is now only just $69
The only benefit is apps/games, but that would take a long while to catch up. Personally I don't care for apps/games on the tv, I just use it to watch shows/movies. Which the old aTV box is very capable of doing.

Did they ever actually say that the 3rd generation will have access to the App Store? There's a good chance I may have missed it but I really can't recall that being confirmed
They've nixed it for 3rd gen. It's on their page.

"The new Apple TV, which Cook also said is the "foundation" for a new type of TV experience, ". I'll believe that when I see it. I've already got half a dozen things hooked up to my tv including the ATV 3, I might see what people say about it before I jump into this one. Although I know already what the fanboys are going to say before they even turn it on.
Personally, I think universal search + a viable app store makes a pretty strong case for a new foundation. Is it certain? No; we'll see how it plays out but as a vision it's fairly solid.

Universal search. And an app store. And Siri. Is it for everyone? No, which is why they still have the $69 model, but especially for those who don't already have an Apple TV, it's a pretty big upgrade.

This is the least excited I have been for any Apple product. The have to prove to me they will actually have content before I will buy. My current ATV is collecting dust, and has been for a long time now.

I already have two Apple TV 3s, I need a third one for my new 4K TV. It's disappointing that the new Apple TV doesn't support 4K. I imagine the next generation, to be released next year, will support 4K with an old A9 SoC that is already in this iPhone 6s Plus.

I'll still buy it just for the tvOS, App Store, and better interface.
If the past is any indication, we will have to wait at least a couple of years for 5th generation Apple TV.

Tim - We save resources by eliminating extra connectors from every unit we make - millions of connectors, gold-plated contacts, etc. While the repair depot may swap-out an entire logic board for the sake of a fast turnaround, that logic board will be repaired... When and if we bin a board or component, it goes into recycling, not the landfill.
News - Still, soldered components greatly reduce the possibility of do-it-yourself repairs...
Tim - Our studies show a small minority did their own repairs when these components were socketed, while socketed and conectorized components have a higher failure rate. What price should the masses pay for the sake of the DIYers? I haven't had to carry an iMac to the Genius Bar myself, but I can't imagine it's a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Now i know what i need to spend my money on! ;)

So its still be christmas now, Thansk Apple! :D

Can someone explain to me what this will do that an old Mac mini won't? Because that's what I've got hooked up to my TV right now and it works a treat—plus in a pinch it does all the other things a computer can do, and on a massive screen too.

It's iOS. You can airplay to it and boom! it turns on by itself. Magical, right?

Plus SIRI.

I'm in but cautiously optimistic as to whether it can replace my current HTPC (Intel NUC running Plex HT) .. mostly due to audio support, or lack thereof. Wonder if it can pass through DTS/DTSHD/TrueHD to a receiver via Plex app - guess there's only one way to find out!
