I'm already preparing myself that we'll get screwed on pricing... $149 will translate to £129 (or even worse... £149!)
Current exchange rates would see the direct conversion price at a more wallet-pleasing approx. £99.

Don't forget the 20% VAT... Apples US prices are always without tax.

I'd guess your £129 is bang on the money!

John.

Any word on international pricing? I use the Apple TV every evening so this is something I will be ordering on Monday!

Does this Apple TV support 5.1 surround sound even with no optical audio point?

The new Apple TV, which Cook also said is the "foundation" for a new type of TV experience, features an A8 processor and either 32 or 64 GB of storage. It also has support for a full App Store, which Apple says will help "modernize" the "linear TV" experience that most consumers are familiar with.

I honestly don't see how. It still doesn't solve the problem of content distribution; in fact, to be able to play any content on the fly just as they showed at their event, you would need to be tied to multiple subscriptions, and that would end up costing more than cable.

I'd rather Apple just waited until they had ironed out some agreements and had their own model in place, THEN release the hardware.

It is already slowly changing on smart TVs. Many channels already now have dedicated apps to watch and re-watch shows at your own convenience. In stead of the continuous stream of junk, these apps enable you to pick the stuff you are interested in and stream it whenever you feel like it. The channels themselves benefit from this, as it enables them to target commercials better.

So, you might not need individual subscriptions at all, but the pipe into your house (that is cable) is supplemented with a host of channel-owned apps that allow you to watch shows from that pipe at your own time and leisure.

I don't have any issue with cable being there if I have a layer of apps on my AppleTV that I can use to sift the junk from that cable and play the stuff I'm interested in whenever I like.

So I just got a 4K TV and I never really looked until now...this thing doesn't do 4K?

Of course it doesn't, New Apple TV 2 will!

What would power a 4K Apple TV? And how much would it cost? As I said to someone else:

Depends, how you look at it. If it was just a media streamer - yes they could've gone 4K. But with the gaming aspect I guess it becomes a bit woollier.

Even the PS4 and Xbox One - dedicated gaming machines with a much higher cost - don't do 1080p at 60FPS all the time (not even 4K - just 1080p): http://uk.ign.com/wikis/xbox-one/PS4_vs._Xbox_One_Native_Resolutions_and_Framerates

The new "4K" Fire TV doesn't bring all the benefits of 4K for even media playback:

"Despite being introduced as a home entertainment tool with some excellent killer specs like a powerful new processor, support for streaming 4K content and even an Alexa personal assistant software inclusion, the Fire TV apparently won’t support high dynamic range! Even worse, the box doesn’t even support transfer of 4K ultra HD at 60Hz.

The reason for both of these major holes in the design of the Fire TV is a simple one: a more detailed look at the boxes specs reveals that Amazon decided to give their new device HDMI ports with the old 1.4 standard instead of the new 2.0 version or the 2.0a standard necessary for 4K UHD + HDR encoding."

I think the 'handicapping' of 4th Gen Apple TV was to keep a fluid, lag free experience across games, movies and the UI. I hope once the next version is released it has the SoC (similar to iPad Pro?) to do it all in 'full' 4K.

Then there's the fact that so few people have 4K TVs and there is so little 4K available to view right now.

Reminds me of Jailbreak tweaks and Android features. I usually get features first on them devices, but that doesn't mean it is well implemented.

Me too. Really I want a VLCTV box that plays anything. I have an Apple TV but personally I’ve retitred my old Mac Pro as Media Centre instead.

I have a Raspberry Pi with OpenELEC as my "play anything" box for local playback - dirt cheap, always on. And I have an ATV 2 for subscriptions and AirPlay.

I'm hoping to replace my AT2 and the Pi with the new Apple TV (hoping for Plex in the App Store for the play anything aspect or potentially something that can be side loaded).

The £99 would only be if you ignore Sales Tax - as ever, US prices are quoted before any regional sales taxes. So if you take your £99 and add 20% VAT to it, you'll get £118. Give Apple some wiggle room so they don't have to reprice it every time Sterling has a mini collapse and it'll be the £129 you suggest.

The new Apple TV also comes with the brand new Siri Remote, which allows users to use Siri to easily sort and find their favorite TV shows and movies.

No. Only 4 languages gets Siri Remote. The rest of us has to type our searches letter by letter the old way. And for that we get a different remote. #bigfail

I dumbed physical media a long time ago and wholly rely on digital content from the iTunes store. I have been waiting to add an apple in my bedroom so I might grab it, but its in Apple philosophy to leave the best to the next iteration, i have a gut feeling we will see 4k next which is weighing my decision to buy this year.

Can you elaborate? I have no problem operating Siri in english and all my Apple devices are set to use english as the system language (but with finnish keyboard). But I live in Finland and Siri does not support finnish. Are you saying I would need to order Apple TV from outside Finland if I want a version with the Siri remote?

Are you sure the remote is different?
Siri won't be supported in my language but I'd like to use it in english.
I can see the Siri button on Apple's site (my country's version) so I hope is the same hardware

Oh I'm sorry I was lazy. I meant the MacBook Pro.
I hate sitting at a desk in my home office.

This is my dream.

Should I buy 32gb or 64gb ?
I assume the hard drive on the ATV is for when you download movies and apps etc, me personally I think ill be going for the smallest storage size, my internet is good enough to stream anything. So I will just be using the storage for apps (if I use them)

This is behind my Apple Watch, my iPad Pro, and my first Mac. So this is a 2016 purchase for me.

Sounds like you're going to have a very Apple year. :)

Can't wait for the new AppleTV. I really think Apple is correct on the Apps angle and if developers take off with it (which I would think they will) this could be a huge product for them in the long run.
