Imagine the sales increase IF someone high-up at Apple demanded they release updates to ALL Macs regularly, every year??

I want to hear the excuse about why they can't update Macs every year. I wonder if they don't have enough money to do that.

Source?

That's what I thought...

1. They didn't grew only 4%

2. Nobody will care for MSOffice because it's a monopoly.

Meanwhile, the Surface sales went down 26% y/y in revenue....... OUCH!

Ahaha! MsVerge... they are just simply ridiculous, like when they rated the AWatch significantly worse than the Moto 270

Inflation:

In economics, inflation is a sustained increase in the general price level of goods and services in an economyover a period of time. When the price level rises, each unit of currency buys fewer goods and services; consequently, inflation reflects a reduction in the purchasing power per unit of money – a loss of real value in the medium of exchange and unit of account within the economy.

Your defense of Apple is meaningless after seeing your signature and that you own practically every Apple product!

No bias here, right? ;)

32GB of RAM is not a "major redesign", and it's just a rumor.

Yes it very probably would require some redesign. The vast majority of other laptops that get to 32GB of RAM use so-DIMMS and not soldering planar RAM chips to the logic board. So the 15" would have to adjust to that. That solution requires ripples through the case and to the motherboard. That would meet the criteria of major redesign.

If try to do it without so-DIMMs than it will means expanding the logic board significantly and shrinking the batteries. ( which I doubt would be a popular overall decision as life time would go significantly down). Trying to solder 32 GB of RAM onto a planar surface is waste of volume. There would be a penalty for that.

Where it would not be redesign is if it didn't exist yet. :) There was no 2016 15" function key model. In that context, technically it isn't redesign.

What would not be surprising would be to see Apple kill off the 2015 models and to pair the "fcn key" 13" 2016 case design with a matching 15" 2017 design that was thicker, had function keys, and a USB 3 Type A port ( and maybe HDMI and/or MagSafe ). Also, maybe some somewhat minor tweaks to the 13" MBP fcn key model to get a Type-A port on the other side ( so had 3 + headphone jack). They would need to tweak the speaker assembly, but two ports is kind of a low amount for a MBP. Lower the prices of the function key models into the slots held by the 2015 stuff.

In short, fill out and update the "function key" options ( only 13" got updated in 2016), and keep the higher tier of touch bar. ( similar how had full regular screen line up just after had high tier Retina line up... before Retina went 'mainstream' in the MBP line up.) At least one, if not both, of the 2015 models will probably get tossed. ( the comatose MBP 13" 2012 stuck around for a long time (~4 years) , so maybe the 2015 13" will take its place in historical legacy offering. )

The 2016 13" function key model looks like a hijacked MBA 2016 project. Apple needed a 'safe' design to roll out along side something that might not high the deadline. There was no 'safe' 15" option. Therefore Apple held the 2015 models in the line up. Fix those two things properly and Apple can do with the normally do and "let go" of the older models.

Apple could just "speed bump" the touch bar models to gen 7b (Kaby lake) with no other tweaks ( except for minor corrections ).

Dongles don't bother me. I'd rather have USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 and deal with dongles.

...or we could have had 2 USB-C/Thunderbolt ports for the future and some USB-A/HDMI ports for today.

I thought the new MBP was a total failure and no one wants to buy them. That's what MacRumors users told everyone.

No, that's what the lunatic fringe who telepathically knew the sales numbers before they were released said.

Others gave reasoned arguments as to why the new machines didn't fit their needs - particularly those who would have liked a bit more grunt and some legacy ports at the expense of a bit of extra bulk (because the 2015 models were SO big and bulky - not).

...and is 4% growth really that impressive when you've just released a 2-year-overdue update to your flagship product?

If they put in a more powerful GPU and offer 32GB ram then I would consider selling my 15" touchbar w/AppleCare for the new one. I don't care about Kaby Lake. The improvement is insignificant. Unless the GPU is a significant upgrade and they roll out a new battery design, I'll keep what I have for the next 3 years. Meanwhile I'm happy with what I have and will continue to enjoy it.

Because users had no real choice if they wanted OS X.

i had to buy a 2016 Macbook Pro despite it being overpriced and with the useless touch bar. BTW the touch bar is totally useless as I touch type and I NEVER look down at the keyboard as it slows me down.

The Touchbar is useful for functions that have nothing to with touch typing, unless of course you're constantly hitting the function row typing who knows what. I'll agree it's not useful for every single activity, but it does provide an additional touch axis that's pretty cool in situations where you can adjust a value while controlling other aspects of the screen with the trackpad.

The most useful thing about the Touchbar is setting it back to its original row of keys. It's hands down the most redundant piece of poop I've ever had to put up with on any of my computers to date.

Still confused how Apple thought this was a useful feature and not a "gimmick", maybe in a year or two it will be helpful.

Anyway, it was either this expensive Macbook Pro or an old + out of date Macbook Air... so yeah, the 2016 macbook pro is selling great!

Are you saying you use the TouchBar less than you used the old Function keys it replaced?

I ordered a maxed out 2014 MBP on eBay after they announced this "Pro" abortion. The 2014 version was the last one to feature nVidia graphics. I don't know what they were thinking when they created this. Love the new, huge touch pad, but the price and lack of usable I/O is inexcusable. Also, NOBODY wants that stupid touch bar. Microsoft is eating your Pro lunch with their GREAT products. For the first time, Apple is having to play catch up with Microsoft's innovation. Better get to it if you don't want to lose your Pro base once and for all. :(

Really? I think it's amazing for scrubbing through video and audio. Answering phone calls, using Siri. Also for going through photos quickly, in the calendar app, in Photoshop, in Safari, in calculator, and for confirming or denying prompts. Even though I can use the keyboard it's just more pleasing to use the bar. TouchID is really amazing and time saving. I don't know how anyone could go back to typing their admin password over and over and over again after using TouchID. The sensor is as good or better than the one on iPhone 7. It always registers for me. Why people complain about extra functionality that compliments the accesible function row makes no sense.

Ha. Sales say otherwise.

Pretty much agree. Its not like you are really missing anything by the loss of the old function keys.

Sales were up only 4% after such a long pent-up demand cycle? That doesn't seem very healthy to me.
Yeah, but was it the new MBP, or was it all the disappointed people holding out for a good refresh, and then settling for the 2015 MBP/refurb 2015 MBP? It only says Macs in general. Without breakdowns by model, cook can say whatever he wants.

The 750m is weaker than the 455 and 460. The I/O is there and more versatile than ever. Any port can be what you want it to be. Not to mention the increased bandwidth TB3 provides. Was it implemented prematurely? Maybe, but by the end of the year people will be complaining about laptops not having TB3/USB-C or just having one port. It's already happening with reviews of competing products.

I seriously sometimes wonder if Tim Cook comes out with these numbers from thin air or if Apple tries to manipulate the markets with some of the reports that have been getting shared here about growth, record sales, MacBooks and iPads, and whatever else Apple has soared and outsold this or that cause when I look around at the Innovation by a bunch of other tech companies and the things their making and releasing I have a really hard time believing a lot of these recent posts about Apple doing so well.
I think that you may be forgetting that there are millions upon millions of consumers who don't care about innovation. They just want an uncomplicated, light-weight and good looking machine to check emails, sign on to Facebook and Twitter and do Face Time with their family or current boyfriend/girlfriend. These folks have prioritized a Mac and an Iphone to be components of their middle class conspicuous consumption so they don't care what the products cost. To them expensive DOES equal quality. North America, Europe and China/India have enough of these consumers to have already made Apple the wealthiest publicly traded corporation on the planet.

They couldn't keep the touchbars in stock for months! BTO had a long wait time. Of course it was because of the new macs. I'm sure a lot of people bought 2015s on Black Friday and refurbished but not the majority of sales.

Touch ID is great. The function keys paired with it would have been great.

All you've described are bells and whistles which aren't even in reach if you have connected your MBP to another screen and type on a magic keyboard.

Screen aside, I'm used to typing blindly, and simply knowing where the brightness/audio buttons are without ever looking down. Right now I have to look down and type in a claw-shape, trying to avoid both the jumbo trackpad and accidentally resting my fingers on this lame strip.

1st world problem, you'll say, but it has palpably affected my productivity.

After reading ALL the posts, I didn't read any clarification about this (when talking about the macbook pro 15 inch):

"He said the model would be "the most significantly redesigned product this year,""

.
.
.

WHAT?

Anybody? you all discussed like girls that point in terms of "sources" and all hahaha; but I saw no clarification as in:

"the editor miss-expressed himself and he's NOT referring to the MBP '15, he's referring to the Mac Pro"

or

"Yeah, that's right, the article means the leaker thinks that a NEW ALL REDESIGNED MACBOOK PRO 15 inch IS COMING SOON AND JUST AFTER IT WAS REDESIGNED in 2016"

WHICH ONE IS IT???!!!!

Expensive does equal quality most of the time. You get what you pay for. We're not talking about some overpriced tacky designer t-shirt for $300. No one beats Apple with respect to build quality, fit and finish. Nobody. Apple is what Microsoft, Dell and Lenovo strive to be. Had it not been for Apple, laptops would still be bulky, ugly plastic machines. While Apple released the Air, PC OEMs were cranking out netbooks.

Spot on assessment of the touch bar. For those who are more involved in creative endeavors such as video editing, color grading, sound design/editing, image processing, modeling, etc it's a new UI that saves a lot of time. It's pretty slick. And intuitive.

For those who are mostly using their laptop for web browsing or mail, then not so much. In that case a regular MacBook (Air) would be a better choice to begin with.

The article you're posting in?...

"Kuo also mentioned a "15-inch MacBook" that would include 32GB of RAM and enter mass production in the early fourth quarter, which starts in September. He said the model would be "the most significantly redesigned product this year," and he believes it will adopt desktop-class RAM to satisfy high-end users.
