We really don't know that the iPhone 5C costs less to make than the iPhone 5.

I do think that this was Apple's way to maintain their flagship premier device and also PERCEPTUALLY a "budget" phone - that also can be more whimsical (more color options, etc - which will appeal to many.

Now they have the best of both worlds. They don't "tarnish" the elegance of the "iPhone" but instead of a "c" series. It's no surprise there's no black or gold iPhone 5C...

At the end of the day - I think Apple created two products with plenty of profit margin to make a killing.

I likewise think the "C" products are a great idea (one of the few for Apple in the past couple years).

I have to agree, the iPhone has some great engineering but when you look at it, that same form factor just doesn't do it anymore, SJ would have got that, he would have understood the importance of a larger screen...what a shame, I certainly won't be buying one, I'd love to have the features, but the upgrade is just not worth it with the same screen as I already have. A very stupid move by Apple..

Really? How do you know Steve would have gotten it? Steve was against a smaller sized iPad and other executives had to convince him it was the right thing to do. People complain about Apple fanboys but I think Steve Jobs fanboys are way worse.

This is so easy to see right thru:

Apple is just trickling features into each iteration. You know they are fully capable of releasing a kick as phone but holding back so they can pull in more money. That's their bottom line these days. Long gone is greatness once introduced to the world in 2007, when the first iphone and first iOS 2.0 with apps was introduced.

Now Tim tries so hard to distort reality but he just can't wield the power given to him. No matter how he writes this email, it's just pathetic.

New stuff making iPhone 5 different than iphone 5S:

1) A7 processor which we don't even really care too much since on iPhone 5, it's already fast enough

2) Camera which is really BS - because these new features should've been in iPhone 5 anyway.

3) Finger print sensor - my iPhone 5 will NOT suddenly cease to work. In fact, how difficult is it to type in a numeral password anyway?

FYI, Tim Cook has been the "S" guy (no pun intended). When Steve Jobs took sick leave in 2009, he released the 3GS. When Steve was in sick leave (and resigned and never came back...:( ) in 2011, he released the 4S.

It should be a bannable offense to pretend to know what Steve would or would not do, say or want and post it on this forum.

No one is forced to upgrade or buy a new iPhone. You're free to go elsewhere. :)

I liked your other comments but this one is just asinine. Of course, no one forces you to buy it. That obvious fact does nothing to diminish his/her point.

I think it should be bannable to complain about Steve posts. People loved the guy/found him inspirational. Your complaint is similar to someone going on a Christian message board and asking for bans of people that claimed to know what Jesus would do in a certain situation.

Just learn to enjoy it.

The obvious point that would diminish the argument is that the poster doesn't know what he's talking about. He doesn't know if what he's even saying is feasible. If Apple thought they could do better than trickling in features they would've done it.

Nope. Thought the whole point of a lower cost iPhone would be to increase marketshare in certain markets. Only a $100 price difference in both contract and in prepaid(off contract) isn't going to do that.

I have no backing for this, but you seem to be assuming that the American price will also apply in those certain markets you mention. Perhaps there will be a bigger price difference in the markets Apple is targeting with this pone.

Oh please. If you can't tell I wrote that tongue-in-cheek instead of how serious you seem to think I did, then you missed the sarcasm/snark.

Why is there no salutation in the email, but just the rakish "Team:"?

Are employees machines, that receive orders?

Thats better than 90% of the emails that fly around - most jump straight to the content and dont even sign off.

To answer your question - basically yes, but thats certainly not an Apple thing.

Agreed on all counts. That said, Steve did the same thing; Apple's business model revolves around incremental upgrades. Steve was really good at putting just enough new in to keep that "wow" factor. The only time where it seemed like he held back too much to me was with the iPad 2 (should have had retina display). I guess you can count the iPhone 3G too since it really had nothing new besdies 3G, GPS, and plastic... but the iPhone was still new enough that simply adding 3G made it "perfect"

There is only a 100.00 price differential between plastic and aluminum.

I see the 5c as holding little value, and the 5s a better buy.

Lets see the Galaxy S4 is plastic and is roughly the same price as the aluminum iPhone 5.

Every tech site hands on review I've seen today says the 5C doesn't look or feel cheap, and a couple said it feels better in the hand than some Android plastic devices (and much more high quality than the 3/3GS). The assumption is Apple went plastic because its cheaper to manufacture. But what if the primary reason was product differentiation and not how much less it costs to build?

No it doesn't. As I've said before, complain with your wallet. You think it's a lame upgrade don't buy it. Go buy something else. if you're unhappy, the best way to send a message to Apple is not to buy their stuff. If iPhone sales fall off a cliff because the 5S isn't 5" and the 5C is just a warmed over 5 in a plastic case, Apple will get the message. :)

This is what I've been thinking too. Some people here may scoff, but the colors on the 5C are going to make it a very desired item for younger people. 5C is going to be the iPod mini of iPhones.

My concern is the non-U.S. market. $99 on contract is fine for Americans who are used to subsidized pricing models. $549 is entirely too much for most upfront buyers outside of the U.S.

$399 base and $499 32GB would have seemed more reasonable to me, but I guess Apple wants to boost its margins.

Does anybody have information on international pricing, particuarly in Asia? I noticed the Australian pricing is $739 / $869.

No.

In China the 5C is US$733 unlocked.

16GB = 4488 Renminbi (Chinese Yuan) = US$733.33

Seems high.

Something's not quite right...

I think transferring the iPhone5 to a plastic case was a bad move.

All that time, money and effort spent doing that when they could have simply put colors on the metal case, and upgraded the 5S with fingerprint and new processing power, as done.
Save all the new look gimmicks for the iPhone6.

Seems high.

Hong Kong may again be one of the cheapest place for iPhones since there is no sales tax. The iPhone 5c is HK$4,688 ~US$604.54

Haha I wish. But it does get annoying when people post what they want or what they think Apple should do and wrap it around "Steve would have....". The only thing different about Apple now (besides being a lot bigger) is Cook and Schiller can't command a stage the way Jobs could.

Singapore 988 SGD.

It was 948 for iPhone 4S and 5 at launch.

It was 888 for iphone 4 at launch.

USD/SGD is going down while the price is going up. So they make huge profit in Singapore.

I suspect there will be more clarity on this tomorrow after the ChinaMobile announcement…
