"Free expression" as long as you agree with Tim?

Kind of like the "freedom of speech protesters" in Berkeley last night who shut down a speech they didn't like. The irony is rich.

Yes, even if you don't agree with Tim, he still won the award.
That's not irony, that's a literal interpretation of "freedom of speech protesters". They're protesting free speech.

...this is what happens when the left stops having a liberal selection of views, narrows down to just a few, and digs in. Now we have two parties of entrenched radical extremists. Only war will untie that knot.

"free speech" until Milo's views differ from their own. Adorable.

And by lash out, you mean break ****, start fires, pepper spray people in the face. These are the attacks that I see. WORDS don't hurt anybody, REAL VIOLENCE does.
They caused superficial damage? A bunch of anarchists does not equal the entire protest. The majority are just there to disapprove. Anyway.. Last one of these a Milo fan *shot* one of the anti Milo guys. Bringing firearms to a protest on a campus where there's a no guns rule. Smart?

Threats do hurt. Milo is an agent of chaos and he loves the attention. The protestors are doing him a favour, in a weird way. He wants a culture war, people aren't prepared to let him think he's winning it.

Your avatar should have trump. The egomaniac is breaking ethics laws with his ties to business and being president.

Btw Tim Cook is standing up for the greater good of the world. Unlike trump who is pushing the white agenda

Not a Trump fan nor voter, but please elaborate on the "white agenda."

Cook is being recognized for both creating technology with a "profound impact" on communication and for using his position to "take a public stand" on issues like racial equality, privacy, the environment, LGBT rights, and more.
He's done that. Kudos for it. He has exercised his right to free speech admirably.

But he's continued Jobs' prudish, control-freak policy prohibiting the sale (thru Apple's digital stores) of books, movies, games, etc. containing sexually explicit material, which makes a "Free Expression Award in the Free Speech category"... puzzling. Don't get me wrong: he and his company have every legal right not to distribute this material when companies want to sell it thru their system. But doing that is not supporting (others') free expression.

Can the MacRumors admins (arn, juli, etc) please consider revisting the threshold required for or altogether turning off user comments for the PR&SI posts?

As was evidenced by the comment section degenerating into a toxic cesspit in the earlier "Open letter to Trump" thread, limiting comments to users with 100 posts or more does not hinder those trying to incite and flame other forum members with differing ideologies.

Edit: I'm also aware of the irony in suggesting this in a response to an article about the "Free Expression Award."

Ah, you can't handle listening to other view points and need a safe space. How cute.

The law at issue is Title 18 Section 208 of the U.S. code. It says federal executive branch employees can’t participate in government matters in which they or their immediate family has a financial interest.
Because of this law, some federal employees put their investments in a blind trust. This allows them to sidestep the regulation and participate in a matter that might otherwise pose a conflict of interest.
But the president and the vice president, despite being executive branch employees, are exempt. According to the law’s definitions, Title 18 Section 208 does not apply to them, nor does it apply to members of Congress or federal judges.

You don't know what you're talking about. Read the actual law and get back to me. He has broken no laws. Educate yourself a little bit.

Furthermore I left politics out of this thread, only making a little comment about the ultra thin trophy case Johnny Ive will be making for Tim. We can talk politics in another thread.

You can express yourself! Go ahead! Nobody's stopping you :) But... people are going to take sides, regardless of the topic. People are going to agree with you, people are going to disagree with you. Some lightly, some not-so-lightly. You just have to determine whether or not what you're arguing for is worth the response you're going to receive.

Further-furthermore, I feel that Tim is only standing up for his bottom line; money. That's it. Also, Trump isn't president of the world, he is president of the USA. Trump is supposed to protect the best interests of the USA, that's it.

Congrats to Timmy for his super award.

I thought this kind of award was reserved for millenials and younger.

I see it as more of a cry for help and a clarion call for prayer rather than an award.

We always have people like you to defend white supremacist's right to spew racist vitriol.

I'll defend his right to hold his own beliefs and express them. I'll also support the rights of people with far worse views to believe as they wish and express their thoughts despite the fact that some of those groups would like to see me killed. Believing in the first amendment (for those of us primarily in the US) means protecting the right of people to think for themselves regardless of whether - and especially if - their opinions are contrary and objectionable to the majority.

I felt sad irony listening to a Berkley professor on NPR this morning talk about that site being the birthplace of protests for freedom of expression and joy at the speaker being silenced in the same breath.

How is he defending white supremacists? This was blatantly inappropriate.
He wasn't, don't forget, if you don't believe his beliefs, you are a racist, didn't you know this? Even though, there is really no evidence of Trump being racist, since the media told him he is, he obviously believes it. Had some tool try to use a CNN article as proof of Trump being racist and White Supremacist supporting him when I asked for real, actual verifiable proof.

Milo and his followers are complete garbage. They're admittedly trolls trying to get a negative reaction from people. It's good to protest that trash.
Limiting someones ability to speak freely is directly an attack on their 1st amendment rights. It's wrong. No matter how deplorable they are. I lover how the left makes excuses for this. The man was invited to Berkeley and had a right to speak. I don't even know who this guy is but he had a right to speak. Anyone who supports this assault on the 1st Amendment is (insert suspension worthy description here).
