Cook went on to state that the "endless scrolling" of social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, although not mentioned directly, are surrounding users with "negativity." He said that Apple wants its customers to enjoy their products to connect with family and friends, not to use them for "endless, mindless scrolling."

Ah I see, so he's basically using this interview as a sales pitch, advocating you NOT to use Facebook or Instagram to connect with your family and friends, but instead use 'APPLE' services like Facetime and iMessage..

You nearly had me Tim, but I see what ya doing here you sly snake salesman fox you..

I think Tim is more concerned about what we might see and discuss on their devices rather than that he wants us to create something great. Their censorship methods and privacy blunders are an evidence of that.
Apple used to produce some of the best apps for creating content. Tools that were so approachable by the average person that they were able to create things far above their skill level.

It's the thing that first impressed me when I purchased my first Apple computer 15 years ago. If they could bring those tools back, I could see myself increasing my dependence on Mac OS computers rather than decreasing it and eventually phasing them out.

For me this is akin to Tim Berners-Lee moaning about the web being used for consumption as opposed to creation - well sorry Tim, but have you actually met real people?

This is all part of the messianic bull that Cook and his gang seem to have completely fallen for. No doubt he genuinely believes it, but it does come across as bizarre/hypocritical when the success of his company depends ultimately on consumption by the "uncreative" masses as opposed to the beautiful people we see in Apple-World adverts.

I do believe Tim believes what he says, but I'm also pretty sure he cares about selling billions and billions worth of iPhones more.

The cat's out of the bag with smart phone technology - we can't go back to pre-social media days.

It's up to each of us to adjust to this new world, but I worry most of us are simply too addicted to our phones.

For people interested in the topic, I‘d recommend checking out “one sec”:

“one sec” uses Shortcuts Automation to toggle a deep breath animation whenever you open one of the configured apps (Instagram, Twitter, YouTube…). This breaks unconcious social media habits and even helps long-term by adding more friction when opening these apps.
Nice idea!

"...we came out with Screen Time to try to give people a true reading of the amount of time they're really spending on their devices..." Am I alone or does anyone else find this is just another notification to be dismissed on a Monday morning? I think Screen Time is a great idea but poorly executed.

If it makes you, Tim, feel any better it is not you or Apple to blame for the mindless scrolling.  created technology that makes life fun, organised, easy, better and connected. It is the social media applications and it's creators that are partly to blame. A lot of people are more intrigued by what is happening in the virtual world than the people surrounding them. I am fortunate that my family, like myself, would prefer to iMessage a breakfast or dinner meeting and discuss the exciting developments coming to the next Apple products, face to face.

«Tim Cook said he's worried about the "endless, mindless scrolling" behavior that social media inspires people to undertake and is generally concerned that people are "using technology too much."»

For about a decade or more (end of 90s till late 00s) Apple was offering at a reasonable price serious, powerful, customisable and repairable macs for those who spend their life on creative stuff: art-designers, typographers, musicians, engineers, video editors, programmers, software developpers, scientists and many more. When talking about macs at a reasonable price I definitely mean a price range between $ 1500 and $ 2500. Following the links below you can see for yourself several typical examples of great macs of the period mentioned above having a reasonable cost when they released (within parentheses), great power, customisation and repairability.

Power macintosh G4 1999 ($1599)

Power macintosh G4 2003 ($1499)

Apple Power Macintosh G5 1.8 PCI 2004 ($1499)

Apple Power Macintosh G5 Dual Core 2.0 2005 ($1999)

Apple Mac Pro Quad Core 2.0 2006 ($2199)

Apple Mac Pro Quad Core 2.8 Nehalem Nehalem 2010 ($2499)

Tim Cook in particular and Apple generally scorned the creative users during the last ten years and such a statement by Cook hides lots of hypocricy. Of course, Apple boys are gonna say that inflation on the prices mentioned above hasn't been taken into account which is partially correct. However, back in 2010 my salary and most of people's salary wasn't significantly lower compared with the salary today, maybe a 5% difference. Moreover, my macintosh bought in 2001 was manufactured in Taiwan and not in China. Obviously, salaries in China are significantly lower than those in Taiwan. So, the profit margins for Apple have been widely expanded when the company move its production line in China. However, the cost of buying any mac has been increased gradually throughout the last 20 years. So, what is all about?

Mac pro Cylinder had a starting price of $2999 when it was introduced in 2013. That machine was a pure failure. The cheapest Mac pro 2019 cost $5999. Even if someone was buying either mac of 2013 or 2019, he would have limited options of upgradeability. The fact that the last series of mac pros offer expandability doesn't mean necessarily that these machines can be fully upgraded in practice. There are no Nvidia cards available for them and AMD options are extremely limited and expensive. In general, Apple since at least a decade doesn't care for us, creative users, who use macs for creative work. Some of us are actually macusers since 80's or 90's. That's why several thousands of macusers falling in this category were forced to make their own hackintosh or even move to bloody Windoze. Apple decided to switch its philosophy to lifestyle and glamour by totally ignoring and disdaining the power macusers that don't waste their time on emojis and political correctness crap on their mac display. There are lots of macusers that their priority is not the so called «social» media but the creative and productive work. Fed up with Cook's hypocricy.

I agree. GarageBand was one of the main reasons why I bought my first Mac in 2011 and I learned all by myself how to play guitar and piano thanks to this amazing and friendly software. I'm not sure if I would buy my first Mac today because of their software in general. They don't even advertise creation or learning any instrument other than the video or photo editing, which is because everyone wants to be a YouTubers these days. By the Apple's marketing it looks like everybody is a movie director.

This is excellent from Tim Cook.

Especially during the week when Zucks is lying his pants off about his terrible platforms.

Especially during the week when crypto scammers and their paid for journalists/politicians are trying to rip off the public With their pump n dump scams.

During the week when we learned that Robinhood was front running traders.

During th week we learned that all NFT platforms had inside trading, money laundering and rug pulls stealing millions from the public.

The attention economy is destroying lives.

Imagine living for 70 years and realizing near the end of your life that you spent 25 years on waste of time endless scrolling and many thousands of dollars were stolen and scammed from you.

We need to get back to what computers are about.

They are a productivity tool. They shouldn’t be used for spreading misinformation, scams, wasting people’s time and energy, sucking in their attention to make them stare at terrible ads.

The attention economy is destroying lives and the people who made this happen need to pay the biggest price possible.
