Interesting that Apple’s solution for “technology serving humanity” isn’t improved working conditions but… a new lifestyle app with a high annual subscription model (and Apple taking their large cut).

Not very convincing.
It’s not and has never been about “technology serving humanity.” It’s a 2 TRILLION DOLLAR company, not a public interest group.

I doubt Zuck ever feels guilty, he's a robot.
I never understand the hate for Zuck. Don’t use his products, simple. I use zero social media. Except for a couple of forums. But hate the man? The fact you don’t know him makes that seem silly

Don't need or miss it. I’m not the most social person. In fact I don’t care for most people. Prefer my dog and cats company over people anyway.

"Tim Cook Wants Apple Devices to Be Used for Creativity, Not 'Endless, Mindless Scrolling'"

and I am supposed to care about what Cook wants? Why on earth would I?
That you’re on macrumors and posted on this thread shows you have an interest and opinion on this subject.(even as usually negative)

I do not use any of his products and have browsers and ad blockers to prevent his and others' trackers, the hate for him is warranted though, he is profiting off of those mindless scrollers, their offspring, and anyone they are connected to. And despite all of his scandals (one example is cambridge analytica) he is still in the seat not being held near accountable.

As to the thread topic, Tim forgets the typical user, mindless scrolling is far easier to do.

"...we came out with Screen Time to try to give people a true reading of the amount of time they're really spending on their devices..." Am I alone or does anyone else find this is just another notification to be dismissed on a Monday morning? I think Screen Time is a great idea but poorly executed.
Exactly. Every generation there’s something people are obsessed is ruining people and civilization because it was compelling enough to take up people’s time and attention. So far my brain has allegedly been rotted by TV, hanging out at the arcade, playing on my game consoles, and my approximate 2 years on Facebook (okay, you’ve got me there!). Yet I’m fully confident I’ll go to my grave not a markedly different person from my grandmothers when they passed away. I’ve got the best of their values and their inner peace.

The one thing I do fear has changed our people for the worse is the wanton dissemination of extreme dogma. But that has happened via tv as well as apps. And it has always happened at different times in human history.

Need something better than Screen Time and limits. It’s way too easy and fast to just “Ignore the limit for today”. And the cycle continues. On the Mac I just add them to the hosts file. I don’t remove those blocks cause it takes a bit more time and mental energy. I have time to reconsider.

Ignoring the limits I set on iOS just becomes a new habit so it serves no purpose for me :( I need more power!

Tim is just going from worse to horrible 🥱

Sure I can agree, hardly have any social accounts, and those I have, has been used mindfully long before Tim even learned the content of that word.
Maybe he should look into what he do mindfully with Apple before trying to tell people about things he don't have a clue about.

Mindfully Tim is totally 0% inspiration - he is on the side of people, aspects of our society where I placed subjects that don't deserve my emotions, attention or reactions anymore.

The Apple and the vision Steve had, and MacRumors do it however 😃

Have you messed around with the focus feature? I don't know your schedule/routine but it maybe worth a try, fair warning: it does take a moment to set it up depending on how personalized you want it.

«Tim Cook said he's worried about the "endless, mindless scrolling" behavior that social media inspires people to undertake and is generally concerned that people are "using technology too much."»

For about a decade or more (end of 90s till late 00s) Apple was offering at a reasonable price serious, powerful, customisable and repairable macs for those who spend their life on creative stuff: art-designers, typographers, musicians, engineers, video editors, programmers, software developpers, scientists and many more. When talking about macs at a reasonable price I definitely mean a price range between $ 1500 and $ 2500. Following the links below you can see for yourself several typical examples of great macs of the period mentioned above having a reasonable cost when they released (within parentheses), great power, customisation and repairability.

Power macintosh G4 1999 ($1599)

Power macintosh G4 2003 ($1499)

Apple Power Macintosh G5 1.8 PCI 2004 ($1499)

Apple Power Macintosh G5 Dual Core 2.0 2005 ($1999)

Apple Mac Pro Quad Core 2.0 2006 ($2199)

Apple Mac Pro Quad Core 2.8 Nehalem Nehalem 2010 ($2499)

Tim Cook in particular and Apple generally scorned the creative users during the last ten years and such a statement by Cook hides lots of hypocricy. Of course, Apple boys are gonna say that inflation on the prices mentioned above hasn't been taken into account which is partially correct. However, back in 2010 my salary and most of people's salary wasn't significantly lower compared with the salary today, maybe a 5% difference. Moreover, my macintosh bought in 2001 was manufactured in Taiwan and not in China. Obviously, salaries in China are significantly lower than those in Taiwan. So, the profit margins for Apple have been widely expanded when the company move its production line in China. However, the cost of buying any mac has been increased gradually throughout the last 20 years. So, what is all about?

Mac pro Cylinder had a starting price of $2999 when it was introduced in 2013. That machine was a pure failure. The cheapest Mac pro 2019 cost $5999. Even if someone was buying either mac of 2013 or 2019, he would have limited options of upgradeability. The fact that the last series of mac pros offer expandability doesn't mean necessarily that these machines can be fully upgraded in practice. There are no Nvidia cards available for them and AMD options are extremely limited and expensive. In general, Apple since at least a decade doesn't care for us, creative users, who use macs for creative work. Some of us are actually macusers since 80's or 90's. That's why several thousands of macusers falling in this category were forced to make their own hackintosh or even move to bloody Windoze. Apple decided to switch its philosophy to lifestyle and glamour by totally ignoring and disdaining the power macusers that don't waste their time on emojis and political correctness crap on their mac display. There are lots of macusers that their priority is not the so called «social» media but the creative and productive work. Fed up with Cook's hypocricy.
Ah, wouldn’t be an article about Apple without someone in the comments going on about how Apple from *insert any random year between 1977-2011* was better because *insert some random comment about emojis.*
happens every time.
now let’s look at all of these computers you mentioned.
to start with, as you mentioned, this doesn’t even slightly take into account inflation.
on top of that, it’s funny that you mention the 2013 Mac Pro, but completely avoid similar, over priced and over-engineered products of the time, like the G4 Cube.
Or The fact that you might be able to pay slightly less 20 years ago, but to get Final Cut Pro, that was $1000. Logic pro? Another thousand. Mac OS X upgrades? $129 every 18-24 months. iLife? $79 upgrade every year. iWork was even more expensive than that.
that’s not even starting to mention the fact that Apple supported their computers with updates for much less time.
did you buy any early 2008 MacBook airs? those stop getting support in 2012, not even a full five years after release.
bought any Apple computer in 2005? It wasn’t getting updates by 2009.
now days, with some very rare exceptions, if you buy an Apple product you’re most likely to get software updates for at least 6 years, 7-9 years in some cases.
iLife and iWork are completely free, and you can get final cut, logic, main stage, motion and compressor all for $200 with free updates. macOS updates have been free for 8 years.
also, as for pricing, Apple has always been known for more expensive products than the competition.
if anything their products have gotten even more competitively priced, the M1 Mac Mini and MacBook Air are absolute steals, better than anything else in their price range.
finally, your post is complete nonsense, Apple has always been focused on consumer products way before professional ones.
in the 2000s, almost all of their marketing was focused on iPods and iTunes, not the Mac Pro.

Have you messed around with the focus feature? I don't know your schedule/routine but it maybe worth a try, fair warning: it does take a moment to set it up depending on how personalized you want it.
You said the biggest problem with all of these features right there.
they’re an absolute pain to set up, so no one will use them.
I’ve set up several iPhones for people. When ScreenTime comes up in the set up, almost everyone universally just says “skip that for now.”
I guarantee you they never go back to it or ever think about it again

Yes I have an opinion. It was stated so I am not sure what you are on about.
Love the juxtaposition of posting in a thread about am opinion that Tim Cook has and on the other hand stating "am I supposed to care about what Cook wants"? If you don't care about what Tim wants, posting in this thread is amusing.

If that's the case, we need more ram and storage and not at the 2010 prices

For people interested in the topic, I‘d recommend checking out “one sec”:

“one sec” uses Shortcuts Automation to toggle a deep breath animation whenever you open one of the configured apps (Instagram, Twitter, YouTube…). This breaks unconcious social media habits and even helps long-term by adding more friction when opening these apps.
I might take a look at that. I used to use a "mindful browsing" plugin on my Mac safari that switched in past a certain point at night and made me wait 10 secs before I could access certain TV/social media websites. I then got worried about security issues and if it could track web pages I was going to though.

Maybe somebody should remind Tim that Apple had a lot of the creatives using Mac's and under his leadership messed that up. Apple tried as hard as they could to annoy the creatives by letting the Mac rot for a few years. Trash can Mac Pro when all people wanted who would typically buy that model was the cheese grater Mac with updated internals then taking 6/7 years to update it again, and doing silly things like removing SD Card slots on their Macbooks. They seem to be correcting course now, but damage has already been done.

If you use it wrong, yes.

The AW is actually the best weapon to get free from constant phone checks and notifications. I disabled all notifications except text messages and calls. No FB, no twitter, no news, no whatsapp, no messenger, no telegram, no useless notifications. Now I can leave my phone in a separate room - or even separate building - and be sure to never miss an important call or text message. And even those, do not disturb is almost always on.
