You said the biggest problem with all of these features right there.
they’re an absolute pain to set up, so no one will use them.
I’ve set up several iPhones for people. When ScreenTime comes up in the set up, almost everyone universally just says “skip that for now.”
I guarantee you they never go back to it or ever think about it again
Definitely an initial pain, but the settings follow you with new devices 😁 The more I mess with my own settings, the faster I get at helping others create their own...not that I find great joy in always being the one to do it 😒

that's why I did a clean out on my social media recently. There were too many people that I do not even care about and I just wanted to have all stories shown as "watched". It was exhausting. I also deleted Instagram from my main phone, that way I do not open it constantly. It also improved my stories because now I actually think about what to post instead of doing it at the heat of the moment later thinking "why did I even post this".

And yes, I have no self-control
I respect your candor and your honesty.

It wasn't the best picture of him, so I've gone ahead and swapped it out. 😊
Is there a good picture of him? In every picture he looks as though he’s getting ready to ask you, “can I help you?” from behind the counter of his antique co-op where he specializes in unopened McDonald’s Happy Meal toys and Hummel figurines.

I wish he would just f$$ck right off.

It would seem to me that for a certain portion of the population, particularly those predisposed towards anxiety and depression, that social media and its endless scrolling does indeed tend to provide fertile food for negative thoughts. I have multiple friends that I have begged to peel themselves away from the honed-in negative spaces of certain social media platforms, but they always tell me it's not a problem and that it doesn't affect them that way. Of course, interacting with them on a day to day basis tells a much different story. I like Tim's ideas about meditating, getting out in nature, and knowing one's place in the grand scheme of the universe.

Man, now I wish I was here sooner. 😄

Ah I see, so he's basically using this interview as a sales pitch, advocating you NOT to use Facebook or Instagram to connect with your family and friends, but instead use 'APPLE' services like Facetime and iMessage..

You nearly had me Tim, but I see what ya doing here you sly snake salesman fox you..
These articles/interviews are always sales pitches. They can't stop. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find all the C level employees sitting around the Thanksgiving table giving similar lip service to their distant relatives.

Maybe it pains him to see M1 iPad Pro users doom scrolling instead of say, making Foundation II.
I love my M1 iPad Pro, but man, what a missed opportunity with all the power it has.

I find this pretty interesting because we are STILL trying to figure out how to incorporate technology into our lives. We all are hypocrites in this. We all say we want less mindless technology time, but all of us get caught up in it, also. It’s actually interesting hearing a CEO at Apple discuss something like this considering their biggest product is a serves mindless technology usage. Are Apple hypocrites? Yes, but again, we all are. I applaud them for at least realizing this fact.

Now if Apple could make the iPad Pro a true “Pro” device, that would help. Put Final Cut and Logic on iPad Pros. I would welcome XCode. Pave the way for others by showing how they can turn their software into iPad apps. I could easily get away with an iPad as a daily driver with these apps. But without them my iPad Air is still 60% consumption and 40% creation, hence why I haven’t bought a Pro iPad. I just don’t need it.

Isn't the asymmetry of creation vs consuming intrinsic to the art. While it takes more time to create something than it takes an individual to consume it, the goal of any creator is to maximize that ratio.

I suppose people could spend most of their time spamming tweets that no one reads, but that seems even more of a waste than a billion people having watched something like Squid Game.

In a new interview, Apple CEO Tim Cook said he's worried about the "endless, mindless scrolling" behavior that social media inspires people to undertake and is generally concerned that people are "using technology too much."

The interview conducted with Bustle touched heavily on Apple's support of Shine, an app designed to fight social stigmas around mental health issues and is "another powerful example of how technology can be used to help improve people's lives," according to Cook. During the interview, Cook said that "mental health is a crisis" and that he tackles the day-to-day stress of being Apple's CEO by meditation and "being out in nature and feeling so insignificant in the world."

Talking about online and technology addiction, Cook repeated a claim he's made previously, having said that "technology should serve humanity and not the other way around" and that he's fundamentally worried that people are using technology too much, and Apple's aim is to try and help them.
Cook went on to state that the "endless scrolling" of social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, although not mentioned directly, are surrounding users with "negativity." He said that Apple wants its customers to enjoy their products to connect with family and friends, not to use them for "endless, mindless scrolling."

Aza Raskin, the creator of the infinite scrolling mechanism on social media, said in 2019 that he is "so sorry" for his invention, adding that he regrets what it's done to society. He said the goal with the idea was to help create the "most seamless experience possible for users," but that regrettably, it has turned out to be a ploy to "keep them online for as long as possible."

The Shine app with a "mission to make caring for your mental health easier, more representative, and more inclusive" was crowned Apple's best app of 2020 is available to download for free on the App Store [Direct Link].

Then bring back Aperture.

Apple should do away with scrolling. Problem solved.

Phil's one last hurrah.

"Folks, there's just one more thing. Today, Apple displays a rare courage before you one more time. Today, we present before you our most advanced display technology yet, and it solves one of the greatest problems of our time. Today, we take away scrolling, and we can't wait for you to realise how much more productive you can be without it. And boy have we patented it!"

I get where Cook's coming from. It really does feel like so much of what my kids are doing on their devices is consumption. I probably would have done much the same if I had an endless supply of games and YouTube though. Instead I was drawing, learning some programming in Basic, and a few other things. With the prevalence of social networks and streaming services, we're doing a lot of consumption ourselves.

From what Apple tends to feature, you can see that they'd rather see more emphasis on encyclopedias, star gazing, GarageBand, iMovie and other stuff they feel could turn into productive hobbies.

Apple's in a bit of a weird spot because they don't necessarily want to compete with App Store developers. They probably hope some more of the broadly accessible, well made, high quality creative and production apps would be made by 3rd parties. But then there's a pricing problem. People used to be $30+ for software and now it's a race to the bottom or endless subscriptions.

A few items that could help them steer their devices in a more productive direction:
  • More Apple-made curriculum. Don't *just* give apps/tools but also projects that can be done with them, as they do for schools and camps. They could work an "ideas" section into their apps rather than depending the downloading of separate PDFs. If they guided someone through making their first song or making a birthday invite or a Christmas card, they might find people more comfortable with "making stuff" on their own after.
  • A MacDraw for the modern age. Think KidPix or MarioPaint for those who are old enough. It's wild that despite iMovie and GarageBand existing, a kid can't just draw a picture of something on their Macs or iOS devices without wading through some pretty weak drawing apps. Windows has always had Paint. We should have something similar for those starting out.
  • Some rethinking about how App Store discovery works. Maybe they have a weekly editorial YouTube show or video podcast where they highlight the best apps. The write-ups on the App Store are OK, but I doubt they're moving the needle much. Certainly not for enough developers.
  • Buy Adobe. Apple likely has the money and boy... they could really buy themselves a LOT of cachet with creative pros. And imagine how the Adobe apps would fly if they were using Apple silicon to the max.

One does not simply go about buying the world. It leads to lawsuits one may not be able to buy their way out of.

Iow to create the junk other people endlessly and mindlessly scroll through on Android and Windows devices.

... Yeah me too. Good thing I have Parallels and can run REVIT.

How about helping to attract more developers-Autodesk, thankfully has brought AutoCAD back to the Mac and iPad but Revit (also Autodesk) is more the industry standard, above solidworks and ArchiCAD.
