I wrote an Automator script that handles TC reconnection on reboot etc (save it as an Application and drop it in your Login items) i can post it if your interested when i get home later this week.

I admit I haven't gone back and read all the posts so I'm probably missing something but with my setup I went into System Preferences->Account. I edited my Login Items and just added my TC disk to the startup. When I log in, it mounts my disc on my desktop and I save docs to it all the time. (Granted, I haven't put my iTunes there yet.) But I haven't had any problems and my backups all seem fine as well.

Why bother with an automator script.

Get your mount icon off your desktop, drag it to your startup items in your profile.

Doh, beat to the punch.

What should I do if I want to use 500GB Time Capsule for TM backup (250GB) and the rest for music/pictures etc. Should I make different partitions and if I should, how can I do that?

Many smarter then I will offer other ways but I told my MB to use the TC for TimeMachine. Then I made a folder and just copy files to that folder and other folders in that main folder. After I got the TC working and Apple support got me my two wifi stations, I was not about to fool with partitioning the TC.

So I can just create a new folder(s) inside the default 'data' folder in TC and use them the way I like?

Is there any way to tell Time Machine to use a specific amount of space? I mean if I only want it to use 250GB, is there any way to limit that space for Time Machine?

I know of no way to limit it except to fill it up with stuff. I read elsewhere of the ability to make a "drive" some how of a set size for the other stuff. You might try searching.

Well does anybody know why it unmounts itself upon completion of a routine backup?

I thought the backup disk Image used by TM is only dismounted. The time Capsule stays connected until you unconnect it. Unless that is what you are referring to.

Makes no sense to me for that disk image to stay if it is used specifically for TM, might as well go away until needed. I have mine running every 6 hours, 1 hour is just overkill.

I don't think it is actually mounting and dismounting the drive every time. I think what you are seeing is the sparsebundle disk image being mounted and dismounted. This is the same as what SuperDuper! does when you have it backup to a disk image. Whenever TM is not doing a backup there is no need for the disk image to be mounted. Again this is not the TC disk but a disk image contained within a folder on the disk that holds your TM backup.

Where are the options located to set the time up for backup? I looked in time machine preferences but couldn't find it.

There aren't any.. it just backs up every hour..

although there is TimeMachineScheduler where you can set the backup from between 1 and 12 hours..

It's a 3rd party app..

I chose not to use it really..just stuck with the default Time Machine hourly thing..
and before oyu ask, if you mac is asleep TM will not wake it up.. it will just perform the backup next time it's on, or you can manually select "Backup Now" from the TM preferences..

HTH

Yes, that does make more sense. I had it wrong.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/03/time-capsule

"Time Machine mounts a sparse disk image from the TC drive, backs up, and unmounts it"

"We tried to back up a second machine while the first was in progress, and not much happened -- it created the disk image and got to "Preparing..." and then did nothing. We're assuming these can only happen one at a time."

I read that too somewhere. They basically said to create a 250MB .dmg file and place it on the TC. It will take up 250MB leaving the remaining 250 for TM. The way to access the .dmg file is to mount it and copy files to/from it. I have not tried this myself, I just remember what they recommended, sort of. Try searching.

Taken from Macworld....

Folks, reader John Guidry gave me a tip via email when I asked him about his superior networked performance sing AFP.

In the Terminal, enter

sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0

(Provide an administrative password when prompted)

This setting changes the TCP/IP stack -- the Internet protocol for handling data backups over a network that's used by AFP by default for several OS releases -- so that it no longer waits for delayed acknowledgements from the device on the other end of the connection.

This change boosted a Time Machine backup from 15 Mbps to 66 Mbps (over 8 megaBYTEs/second or half a gig a minute). (The overall speed depends on how many small files are involved, too, since AFP is always poor with small files being copied.)

Can anybody explain what this does in more detail and if it is safe to do? Does it have a detrimental effect on non-TM use?

Delay ACK to try and piggyback it onto a data packet ;) It's perfectly safe.. googling around it seems a common practice for linux/unix users to do to speed up transfers. It just sends the ACK (acknowledge) with the data packet rather than separately.

FWIW, if you just sysctl -w it, it'll only work until you reboot. you need to add this value to /etc/sysctl.conf

Thanks for the info, I may have to give it a try!

OK, slightly frustrating...

So, I have a 1TB Time Capsule hooked up via Ethernet to my iMac and wirelessly to my MacBook. Every time I shut down one of the machines, every time I power it back up it doesn't automatically find the Time Capsule and start backing up again -- instead I have to go into Time Machine preferences and select the Time Capsule disk. Each time. WTF, I thought this was supposed to be one click and forget about it?

For anyone experiencing this same problem -- As suggested on the Apple support discussion forum, I changed the disc name in the Airport Utility and took out the spaces (very simple name now, one word no spaces) and it solved the problem on both the iMac and the MacBook.

I actually returned my TB TC due to the fact that I felt that it had bad wifi reception. I thought that the range of the Airport Express was much superior. Accessing the hard drive wirelessly can be a pain as well and I didnt feel that it was worth the $425 that I paid for the unit.

How Fast Does Tc Transfer Files To Usb Drive?

I have just installed Time Capsule and have attached a USB drive to it. I would like to transfer files from TC to my USB drive. I noticed that this is very very slow and wonder if I am doing something wrong. Shouldnt this simply transfer at USB2.0 speeds? Or, does it have to communicate with my MBP over the wireless in order to do these file transfers?

I have a 70GB file on my TC (Music) that I want to keep on the other USB drive attached and would like to transfer it. WHat is the fastest way to do this?

THanks

Larry
