I just unplugged my linksys router, plugged in my timecapsule via ethernet to my mac pro, then set everything up. Allowed time machine to copy the data over, then switched my mac pro over to wireless when the large download was done.

so you didnt have to choose an option to "replace your current router"?

i would do what you did above, ie, just physically replace the old router with new.. its just the "easy instructions" i have been reading about are confusing me somewhat.. lol..

My guess is that since the TC isn't likely able to read the configuration settings of the Linksys, the "replace your current router" feature wasn't available. Sounds like it is if you are replacing an Airport.

Yank the old one and plug in the Time Capsule in its place. Then use the AirPort Assistant to set up your Time Capsule.

The main reason to connect your Mac to the Time Capsule via ethernet is to expedite the first Time Machine backup - Apple figures people will be backing up potentially hundreds of gigabytes of data for this first sync, and this will take a loooong time via wireless (even on an 802.11n-only network), but you can do it at gigabit ethernet speed with a direct connection. Still might take 6+ hours if you've got several hundred gigabytes on your drive (i.e., including all applications, etc). However once done, then hourly backups will be much, much smaller and can happily occur in the background via wireless.

Are any UK users able to track their shipment yet? Still nothing on the order page for me yet.

This is stupid, but how do I get my Mac to recognize my TC through ethernet? Must it also be plugged into the modem? I only have one ethernet cord and when I use it to connect the TC to my Mac the TC is no longer recognized.

At least this was on time

After an agonizingly long wait for my MP 8800 GT where ppl who ordered way after a bunch of us were getting theirs way before us, I'm sure glad I got the TC on time. I ordered it back in January w/ the MP.

Too tired to mess with it tonight. Hope it has the option to 'extend the network'. If not, I may run it at 5Ghz and leave the existing airport extreme network at 2.4 for our iPhones and winblows slaptops (that rarely get used).

Night............. zZzZZzZZzZZZZZ

I'm from the Uk and can track mine. I ordered Sat morning. It was shipped yesterday via UPS (UK) and delivery is for today. So mine is not coming from China. Unfortunately I am not in all day. I have to go out at some point this morning to pick my daughter up.

nothing on the apple status page or even the TNT page..
i called TNT yesterday and will be calling today, as apparently a bunch of stuff missed the flight to uk..

0800 100 600 for TNT and give them your consignment number. This should appear as your tracking number on the Apple order status page.

EDIT: I just called TNT and they said it should be out for delivery tomorrow!! Woohoo!!

Thanks.

Looks like my mistake was ordering on launch day!

I've no tracking number on my order page at all, so I'll just sit tight.

Damn Couriers!

Damn TNT.. they said it would be out for delivery today... didn't come..

Now they say it will arrive tomorrow..

But still no info showing up on Apple order page or TNT's website

Just got my Time Capsule hooked up as a replacement for GB Airport Extreme and all seems to be working well. Ethernet backup of my main machine is now running at 8-10MBs.

I was impressed with the way the install software allowed me to import all my setting from the AE.

So far, I am impressed. :)

I phoned yesterday and they said it was due in Holland today, UK tomorrow, out for delivery on Friday. Just as well its not urgent....

Well, it arrived a day early and there's never been any tracking info on the website, so it might be worth calling TNT if you're planning taking time off to be in for the delivery.

It comes in a surprisingly big box....

Time Capsule added to existing network???

I have an existing Airport Extreme 802.11g network connected to a cable DSL that has supplied my home with good wireless networking for the last few years. Now enter TC! I would like to use my existing AE downstairs to add some extension to my network but have found it to be more complex than I thought it would be.
To make things even work again with the TC I have gone back to attaching the DSL to the AE and using an ethernet cable, connecting to the TC! Not sure what I have here but at least I can do the backup and get on line!
Has anyone done this yet or can offer a "recipe" to accomplish this if possible.
I know I am using a 802.11g with a new 802.11n, but from what I have read that should work (?)
Any help would be appreciated.

Another question, is it possible to make a backup from the internal tc harddrive? (connect a usb harddisk to the usb from the tc)

Unfortunately I don't think this feature is built into TC as it normally should be. You can connect a usb disk to the TC and do a copy from the internal to the external (ow vice versa) but the data flows to your computer and back; the TC could handle this completely internally like many NAS devices do if they would program it this way. C'mon Apple, give us this needed feature!

Arrrgghh.. this is getting ridiculous now..

I still haven't had my TC which was supposed to be delivered on the 5th..

just called TNT (again) who say it's still in Arnhem (Netherlands) and hasn't come into the UK yet..

now a revised delivery date in 10th (Monday).. !!!

i concur with other guys above, i will not be ordering on announcement day next time!

my mini review

well, i finally received my Time Capsule yesterday..

i must say, the box is fairly large

overall it reminds me of a glorified iPod box (ie, 3G ipod)

to set up, i ripped my linksys wrt54g out and replaced with TC..

at first i got a bit confused as the configure routers you normally go via a admin web page address..
no such thing with the time capsule..

i honestly couldn't believe how simple it was..

a few clicks and the TC rebooted itself and I had a green light.

opened safari and google.com worked straight away.. brilliant!!

setting up airport was also a breeze and my iphone and macbook worked over wifi instantly.

as for network speeds.. well.. i transferred 2.2gb from my imac (802.11g) to my macbook (802.11g) and it took 14 minutes.. SPEEDY!!!

the linksys would take much longer than that!!

i dont have any 802.11n equip (except the TC), so can't test that out.

i haven't yet done any time machine backups (didn't have the time).. but will set it up tonight for an overnight run over ethernet (as recommended by apple)

so far, i am very impressed.. lets hope it keeps the uptime!!
