Hi, so I was backing up my Macbook to an external HDD, and after it finished backing up, it started encrypting like I set it to do.

The encryption process was really slow, like 30% over 10 hours. The problem is, the last time I checked, it was at 70%. Then, I shifted my computer and HDD, and suddenly the progress bar no longer showed that it was encrypting, nor did it show the progress bar of encryption. The external HDD was NOT dismounted, and the power source was NOT unplugged, I checked.

I looked around online for ways to check if the encryption was complete:

I went to Apple logo at top left hand corner -> About This Mac -> System Report -> Hardware -> Storage -> <Name of External HDD Volume> -> below is what it says:

<Name of External HDD Volume>:
Available: 856.47 GB (856,470,904,832 bytes)

and I also opened up Terminal and typed "diskutil cs list":

So clearly the encryption process was not completed. However, Time Machine does not give an option to resume encryption! I tried "Back Up Now", but it only backs up the changes I made since the last backup; there is no mention of encryption anywhere. Please help me find a way to resume encryption. Thank you!

What do you mean by "shifted my computer and HDD"? It looks like you interrupted the process and now it's stalled. I don't know of a way to get out of that except to dismount the drive, erase it, run Time Machine again for a full backup and then use FileVault once more.
